I must respectfully disagree. Yes, any impeachment attempt is doomed to fail in the Senate. But the Democrats need to show their base that they're willing to fight for what's right and not just acquiesce weakly to the GOP. Nothing will depress Democrat turnout like defeatism. At least force Moscow Mitch to block the vote, or force the GOP Senators to vote down the removal. Emboldening Trump's supporters is a non-issue--they're already as emboldened as they will ever be. If 40% of voters still support Trump in the face of obvious corruption, philandering, obstruction of justice, collusion with enemies of America, and violent child rape, a failed impeachment won't even move the needle. Instead, the Democrats need to motivate 41% of their voters to show up on Election Day.

I hate to say this, but I think impeaching Donald Trump is a horrible idea. The Democrats don't have anything like the votes necessary to convict him in the Senate, and with Moscow Mitch at the helm, I don't know that there would ever even be a vote. The effect I foresee from an impeachment of Trump is to make him a martyr, emboldening his fan base for the next two election cycles (at least) and virtually guaranteeing his reelection next November. You can't count on Donald Trump to resign the Presidency, the way Nixon did, at the threat of impeachment. That would require a sense of shame, or a concern for the future of the country, or some kind of understanding that he's done something genuinely wrong. Nothing I've ever seen of this President leads me to believe that he possesses any of those traits. If the Democrats really want to be done with Donald Trump--and really, who could blame them?--they need to focus on a candidate and a platform that can unite the Democrats' various warring factions while winning enough support from moderates and disenfranchised Republicans to take back all of those Electoral College votes Trump wasn't projected to win the last time. That isn't likely, but is at least theoretically possible to accomplish. But impeachment is a non-starter as long as McConnell and the GOP run the Senate.

Damn. 50 is way too young (Says a guy getting there) I adored the character development of Nog. They took what was at best a 'dead end kid' character from a previously joke species, and developed his storyline into an amazing immigrant experience where he took what was best from the culture of his heritage and used it to make his way into the culture of his choice. Aron Eisenberg has said of Nog, "The thing that I thought they did so well with Nog was that they didn't make him perfect. He joined Starfleet with the determination and the tenacity to succeed, but he didn't always make the right decision, but he always kept trying again. And I always felt that Nog was one of the most Human characters on that show."

    Longest Running Thread EVER

Long preamble here. The administrative unit in which I have the Associate Director title got moved out of one building last spring (that one was subsequently demolished and the spot is being built on now), and into another one. The current location is a building that is older than the building that was demolished. In this older building/new location, the only men's restroom is on the third floor (the only women's restroom is on the second floor). Yes, classes are held in this building (which has three floors), and things get pretty congested during passing periods. So ... unless it is pouring down rain, when my morning coffee demands liberation, rather than go upstairs, it is more convenient for me to duck outside and walk into another building right across the way, where there is a less-used men's room right near the entry on that entry level. That other building houses the Business School. I realized today that what I am doing is ... using the Business School as my outhouse. After some consideration ... as a member of the College of Science & Engineering, I am oddly OK with that.

I'm of the opinion that a lot of bad movies could be salvaged One of my own guilty pleasures I'd like to see redone would be the 1986 movie "Troll" Now there has been talk of this, mostly capitalizing on the fact the hero of the story was named "Harry Potter Jr.!" But I don't think for one Minute Rowling took the name from this despite what the makers of the 1986 film claimed. The idea of a troll remaking an entire apartment complex into his fairie kingdom? A young boy the only one at first aware of his sister's possession, and a witch in the apartment on the top floor? Oh the CGI alone would be worth it as a fun flick

As an option (though it likely won't ring well for users of newer editions) : We wanted vehicles well before there were actual vehicle rules. (we clued in pretty early that you could do more than just supers with the game system, and we were ready to explore new planets ) We used the character building rules to make vehicles. We still do. Buy Growth until you get the size you want, buy relevant movement powers, INT for a computer, Ego for an AI, etc. Not only does it work perfectly well, it eliminates the need for a whole new subset of rules.

Great article. And I agreed with the author's insights. I've been on the side of having a doctor afraid to continue medication and finishing off my shoulder reconstruction (bone dissolving screws and all) was VERY painful. I was only a few weeks into the pain meds and they reduced my dose to something slightly less effective than thinking happy thoughts. Let the doctors sort it out. Keep the politicians and threats of taking medical licenses away from healthcare and let people in pain get the medication they need. The great political art of changing the laws to make it look like you're doing something is usually worse than not doing anything at all.

I think the "2 levels to add damage" thing probably should be grandfathered out entirely, to be honest. It makes things a bit more cluttered and complicates builds (especially with DCV) if you're trying to simulate combat skill levels. I think Multipower is absolutely the wrong way to go about it for a lot of reasons but not the least of which is COST Points Power 10 Multipower (Combat Skill Level) 10 pts 1f OCV +2 1f DCV +2 1f Blast 1d6 1f HTA 1d6 1f HKA 1 Damage Class 1f RKA 1 Damage Class There's your base multipower, its 17 points for 2 overall combat skill levels. What a bargain

Well as a stand alone fruity bug hunt designed for bad actors to belt out cheesy lines while getting stabbed or melted by giant bugs and "professional soldiers" run around and make a three stooges skit seem to be high drama. It isn't bad. I have enjoyed it as a mindless boom boom show. But it doesn't even come close to the book. Imagine you hear that they are making a major motion picture on the classic novel War and Peace by Tolstoy. The movies opens with a circa 1870's wagon crossing American west and Laura Ingles asks Pa how long till they reach the farm.......... When you try to say "but......" everyone shushes you and says "it's a parody and you obviously can't understand true art". If you listen to Veer'idiot talk about the military, you realize that his concepts on just what the modern military is basically qualifies as a parody itself. When I listened to an interview once I was taken by his complete lack of knowledge on the subject. He basically took all the vitriol and name calling of the 60's protesters as fact. Anyway, the movie is a fun bug hunt, but shares nothing with the book. If you wnat to read the book, you will need to find a 70's or earlier hardcopy to make sure you get the actual book as written. I'm sure there are still e-books out there that haven't been "modernized for understanding" but I do not know how you could tell.

I'm not at home to be able to check my books, but I seem to remember some venoms in the Bestiary being written up as linked powers (Drains, I think, linked to HKAs) with "Only if HKA does body damage (-1/2)". It seems like that approach would also work here. The value of the limitation could change depending on how common resistant defenses are in the campaign, of course.

I wouldn't say that sales are in a healthy state currently nor that the rules are particularly well accepted by the masses. The game who's biggest weakness was complexity became increasingly complex and rules heavy until the player base all but vanished. Personally the dropping of figured characteristics was not a big deal for me and it does allow some interesting character constructs. On the other hand they feel pretty intuitive to players and losing them has NOT helped adoption of the game system by new players. My Saturday game just wrapped up a big campaign in 6th edition and honestly if HERO designer supported 4th edition I'd revert back to that before the next campaign starts.

    Projective Senses

I was thinking about this last night (I don't know why) and the more I did, the more I thought that I would just add UBO on the Senses or Sense Groups you want others to use. It will give you the broadest options in regards to "how it works" you can make the targeting Mental (so it's targeting is LOS), Usable Only Through Mind Link (-0 ) or keep the ranged targeting rules for UOO as is (see UOO Table Champions Complete p. 119. See Champions Complete Pg 80. Mind Link- No LOS for a great way to do this without range or LOS. And finally the UOO rules provide a way to make differing Ad/Disads for the Recipient and Grantor for example the Grantor may need to uses Gestures or Incantation (Say if its a Spell) whereas the Recipient may not. Telepathy would get a bit twisty to get adjust correctly IMO. Additionally, Telepathy also includes the ability to "read" minds, on a moral or "Feeling of the Power" sense, allowing someone to access your senses as opposed to transmitting your sensations definitely have a different feeling to them though you can Ad/Disad it any way you want so it ends up working. Either way, good luck and enjoy!

There are. If you want to read Starship Troopers yiu need a copy from the 70's. After that each version seems to drift until the last few versions seem to support the political views of the movie. I did a side by side of a few key chapters back in 02 or 03ish and was fairly shocked at the blatant editorializing when they "modernized" the book for understanding. But heck, in the last ten years fascism magically migrated from left to right, so what do I know....

    Projective Senses

I agree as to the Telepathy (with a minor limitation that it only carries over what the character perceives, not thoughts / memories, and a more sizable limitation that it's only a one-way connection). One thing about the Clairsentience - AIUI technically it allows you to use any senses *you* possess for that sense group, at that target location. So even if Wifeikins (wife of Foxiekins) has IR, UV, Nightvision, and X-Ray vision, and she hits Foxie with Clairsentience UBO, well, if Foxie doesn't have any of those senses, then I believe Foxie can only use Plain Old Eyeballs v. 1.0 (unless either Wifeikins' senses are also UBO, or the GM wants to be nice and hand-wave it). But Telepathy gets around that issue, as well as the lender's successful perception issue that Duke described.

Good list. The worst of the bunch was Starship Troopers. Beyond horrible. I am aware of the claim it was a parody. But Veer'idiots serious concept of any military or police is a parody of the real word anyway. So at best itcwas a parody of a parody. I've watched the show multiple times, and as Operation Bughunt. But Starship Troopers it is not. John Carter was just a miss. They did a lot right (creature effects and such) but it could have been much better if they bothered to read the books. Or if they did read them, a reading comprehension class is recommended. FF and DP were just meh. If they made new versions no one would probably realize another version existed.
  37. 1 point
OK but then we're in the same territory as deleting Transfer and saying "build it yourself." It would be easier for players and builds if you had pre-built skill levels that people could just buy and indicate with a single, simple line rather than yet another block o' text don't you think?

Swords in science fiction -- why?

In the real world, in the past century or so, people have used knives like the K-Bar, kukris, machetes, bayonets, improvised spears and clubs, and the occasional samurai sword. They're quiet, don't need reloading, and useful in close quarters combat or when you're out of ammo. Also, soldiers since the dawn of guns have used rifles as clubs when in close quarters combat. Now, a powered melee weapon (chainsword, lightsaber, vibroblade or what have you) might be a useful adjunct in a world of enhanced body armor, powered armor, xenomorphs and force fields. But largely the functionality would be similar to nonpowered melee weapons, except of course you could run out of power.

I would like to see a remake of Starship Troopers that wasn't a complete middle finger to the original book. As far as The Princess Bride is concerned, I think anyone who suggests a remake should be put into the Zoo of Death. (It's possible that I'm a little opinionated where these movies are concerned.)

    A New World.

Hrm. How do you prevent things like signal tower arrays? These can actually transmit small amounts of information over vast distances quickly. For a fantasy take on that, see Terry Pratchett's "Going Postal". Also, if you have speedsters or folks who can easily fly or teleport, letter delivery gets much faster. If you leave combustion engines on the table then planes are around and also speed transport and news. If you take it off, are you resorting to horses or does Steam Punk / mysticism step in? Additional Thoughts: If you leave electricity on the table but have a change in the ionization of metals such that below a certain volume / area they cannot carry signal you could leave internal combustion engines and many other older versions of things still working but nothing with a computer or really anything below a circuit board that has say 12ga wire runs on it? Or perhaps some other material works but it is so expensive and rare that it is basically a military or ultra elite type of thing? Generators are fine, but you can't transmit more than say 1 amp (about 1/20th of current capacity) over a 12 gauge extension cord. And line loss is higher as well. DC become more the norm because of line loss. Or make it logarithmic, perhaps an inverted n^2? The smaller the gauge, the less electricity it will carry until it reaches 0 at some size, say 32 gauge? - E

    Help need: Multiform

That's where the OIF (-1/2) bonus comes in. As we saw in Captain America: Civil War Tony didn't have his Armor when the Winter Soldier broke out of containment. A -1/2 limitations means you don't get to use your powers half the time. A -1 for an OAF means that at some point someone will make a grab for the thing in a fight. Wonder Woman knows that from the number of times she's been bound by her magic lasso.
