    Remembrance

Detonating artillery shells falling on Dunkirk echoed in the distance. It was late May, 1940, my father was only eleven years old. He was in a small restaurant with my grandfather, the two of them perplexed by the French soldier sitting next to them having a feast. The soldier's meal was lavish, far in excess of what virtually all Europeans were used to in those days of rationing. My grandfather struck up conversation with the soldier. "Excuse me, but you are using up all your ration coupons on this one meal. What will you eat later if you spend them all like this?" The soldier

  4. I take a different perspective on the issue of a pardon. What Donald Trump is being prosecuted for in New York has nothing to do with his activities as President. In his election campaign and his capacity as President, Trump used the rhetoric of hatred and fear to deliberately exacerbate divisions within America. He appointed his cronies to positions of authority, lied to the American people on numerous occasions, subverted the law and the Constitution, and abused his power. He did all this for personal gain and to pave the way for an authoritarian regime. And Trump still nearly su

  7. President-elect Biden at the moment is giving a heart-felt Thanksgiving speech. He was talking about those we lost to COVID and the empty spots which will be around the Thanksgiving tables across the country this year. And started talking about the pain of losing his wife that first year and was apparently going to try to tie that thought into Thanksgiving and what he went through. But he kind of chocked up half-way through trying to get to his point and said, "I remember that first Thanksgiving" then kind of trailed off (choked up a bit), didn't complete the thought,

  11. And yet the recent spate of extremely profitable superhero movies have been founded upon selfless action striving to help others, even at great personal cost. The biggest movie of last year, Avengers: Endgame, featured a whole cast of protagonists driven by responsibility, compassion, self-sacrifice, love. I believe the trend of narcissism, cynicism, nihilism in entertainment has worn down, and many people are hungry for stories of true heroism again. They just want those stories to be told well.

The congressional oversight committee, by law, is supposed to have unlimited access to the president's tax returns so they can ensure he isn't compromised in some way...such as owing hundreds of millions of dollars to a hostile foreign power as Trump apparently does. When the oversight committee asked the head of the IRS for Trump's tax returns, Trump told him to ignore the law and not give them his tax returns. Note that if there are no serious problems found, the committee isn't allowed to publicize the

Not to get too political but I've always had a problem with the "get out to vote, it's your civic duty" schtick which people roll out at election time. No, it's your civic duty to be informed and interested. It isn't your civic duty to go out and vote at random, vote for the person with the best smile, or vote for the person with the best slogan. Sure, you're free to do it that way if you want but it isn't your duty to do it like that.

Hopefully, Biden will never be the leader of my country Because if he is, something‘s gone wrong with the Canadian legal system. I think there should be a vote recount. It’ll be awesome to see Trump lose twice. Joe Biden is not my president!! At least not till January, which won’t come soon enough. Donald Trump has now had the true 2020 e

I know you probably hear this everywhere, but this election is likely to be the largest in American history. Please, if you have not already done so, make some time tomorrow and cast your vote. I am sure some of you will vote differently than me and that's to be expected, we are a diverse nation with many different peoples and opinions. But please do make your voice heard in the least controversial way possible: Cast your ballot. - E

You're not wrong. I want to raise the point, however, that the absolute ultimate in-game mechanical effect of "invisibility" (which I am sorely tempt

  32. Seriously wrong tense there. It *should be* over. barring the challenges. Point of irony here: if cases end up at the Supreme Court and Trump still loses, it's his own packed court. But I'm not going to say it's over until Biden takes the oath of office. I am perfectly content to be called paranoid, but it's not a done deal until then. And Trump still holds the position; he's got, what, 70-odd days to throw a tantrum. He took the chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission away earlier this week, for promoting wind and solar, and gave it to a different member. H

Being Republicans with a paint job isn't going to cut it. They need a vision, and they need to sell it to get the public excited. It doesn't matter whether or not they talk about more leftist policies, because the Republicans will accuse them of being socialists without any evidence anyway. But all polls show that the majority of Americans want a government health care option. They want more support for the middle class and small busine

It could be he has a lot of fans here. It could be some folks don't want to vote for Trump but knew that it wouldn't matter so they perhaps did it as a joke. Forgive the cynicism of "It wouldn't matter", but it was a largely foregone conclusion that Trump would win here. We had record breaking voting going on, no blame to the young Millienals and even younger Gen Zs. I'm sure they made up a great chunk of that 36% that DID go
