  1. When you define an existing element in a rules template, you're overwriting the built-in definition. If you want to keep the built-in definition and add to it (as in your case), you need to copy the built-in definition into your extension template and use that as your starting point.  That's going to be a LARGE copy/paste for Languages, but should be a one time thing and let you add to existing languages and modify the language familiarity chart accordingly.

  2. Providing videos or tutorials on basic use of a computer/operating system is well beyond the purview of HD's support.  That said, I'm sure that a simple search would find you any number of videos detailing how to open a command prompt under Windows.

The download section of this site has a large number of export formats.  I have no idea what you mean by "non-.hde formats" -- .hde is the extension for HD export formats, there is no other option.  All .hde files are editable, assuming you're familiar with the syntax of whatever format they're designed to produce (e.g. HTML, RTF, text, etc.).

  3. Would it benefit HERO if some company (for whatever reason) decided to spend a significant amount of money and time creating a game which promoted the system (based on HERO mechanics, IP, or whatever)?  Certainly.  But the lack of business acumen on display by some in this thread is worrying.

Let's remove the IP rights from consideration -- assume that they're yours. You've managed to get a moment with one of the higher ups at a major development studio (e.g. Blizzard).  Give us your elevator pitch.  Why should they have any interest in purchasing the IP for Champions vs. going with a well-known commodity like Marvel or DC...or writing their own?

That doesn't mean that HERO System's IP is worthless, it's just not worth anything meaningful to the CRPG or MMORPG industries -- there's not enough cross-over from the already small section of the TTRPG market that HERO occupies to make any such consideration make sense.

  4. I suspect your order of operations is off a bit - it makes little to no sense to outlay the funds required to buy back the Champions IP and then hope that another offer comes along to purchase said IP at a higher price.

If there is interest in building a CRPG or other game enterprise based off of the Champions IP (and not "just" HERO System), that would be the time to work on the transfer/buy back of IP.

  5. We're talking past each other, I think. The purpose of HD is to allow building characters according to the rules of the system, not to expand on those rules or refine them.

Believe me, there are plenty of areas that I would like to “refine”/change the rules of the system (would make the coding of HD vastly easier in many areas)…but, again, that's not the purpose of HD.

Get the rules changed so that Side Effect is more granular/specific and I'll happily modify HD to match.

  6. HD functionality at its core is to reflect the rules of the system, so I'm not entirely sure what you're after here.  Will I modify HD to be more deterministic so that it can be easily applied to programmatic solutions?  No, not until the rules of the system are similarly modified.  It's not an optional thing -- changing it to be a deterministic/hard-coded solution would deviate from the rules and the flexibility defined therein.

  7. The original plan/design for that dialog included that, but there's nothing in the rules preventing you from purchasing RAR with a Skill (or Characteristic) that the character doesn't have (and some builds which require exactly that) so it ended up as you see it now.  The flexibility of the system is going to often get in the way of the more deterministic systems needed for programmatic interpretation of characters/abilities.

  8. Technically, it can, but it's dependent on system-level permissions -- if the system (MacOS in this case) places the iCloud folders under restricted permissions (viewable only by the user, for example), HD/Java will not be able to see them.  If Java has been granted read/write access to iCloud-synced folders, HD will be able to read them without issue (this is the setup I have on my own system).

  9. As LoneWolf notes, the problem with this is not in the rules or how to build it, it's the base concept -- it's being defined not as an effect but as a rules construct.

"The character can abort to defensive actions without losing his next Phase."  Great...what if the character is a SPD 4, it's Segment 3 and the character has already acted.  Can they take a defensive action in the same phase (effectively acting twice)?  What if they're attacked on Segment 4, abort to a defensive action, and then are attacked again on Segment 5 -- can they abort again to a different action? Not defining the power concept without directly referencing rules opens it up to a slew of inconsistencies and problems.

If you define it in terms of effect, you're able to follow one of the cardinal guidelines in HERO -- reasoning from effect.

"The character is extremely skilled in combat, they're able to move so well that they are extremely difficult to hit."  Well, that's pretty easy to build -- increased DCV.

"...but this only applies for melee combat. Ranged attackers are able to target the character without issue."  Good! We've just moved from straight DCV to defensive combat levels, HTH only.

"...and they're able to move in a manner that sets them up for their next attack."  Let's toss in some offensive combat levels with a few appropriate limitations.

And so on - the better you define the effect you're after the clearer the build becomes.
