    I've also had good luck using it semi-randomly --> making a certain number of rolls until some kind of pattern appears and then winging the rest of it.

     

    That's the exact method by which I live my actual real life. What a coincidence!

    Don;t forget the draw strings on the back of his face mask as an OOF of some sort. Cap grabs it and yanks his head back and I think chops his throat.

    Spidey: I am satisfied with Cobra's numbers, since most of the sources I was able to get jibe well at his speed figure. Please adjust them however you like for your consumption though- I have no ownership over the character or the concept, it is just what seems right to me. Since it's just a super-short-range power, I upped the END requirements.

    So true. With a good sized VPP, a SPD 4 speedster is totally possible. My own signature speedster is SPD 5, DEX 23, but he could just as easily have been 4 and 20.

    re: name: Nah, you're not overdoing a theme, you're homaging the Golden and Silver Age. Especially the Silver Age. Everyone had names that were either alliterative or referential. Category one: Clark Kent, Lex Luthor, Lois lain, Lana Lang, Gorilla Grodd, and so on. Category two: Knight and Fogg, Dr. Octopus, Dr. Steven Strange (a twofer- alliterative and referring to a strange ability), and so forth.

     

    When I really get a good idea with my heroes, it works out that way, too. Homage is totally cool. I devised a thrown objects guy whose secret ID name is Clinton Queen (both an alliteration and an homage to Hawkeye and Green Arrow. Not throwers, but close enough). One of the crime bosses I devised is obsessed with the power of light and darkness, and his name is Dr. Reisenscheine (say it out loud).

     

    Point is: Character names can be corny, or they can be good, but the best names are both.

    Oh! No pic, I only made him up for a WWE console video game. I don't know if any of the freeware could do him justice. I think he'd need to be rendered by Dr. Destiny for any of his personality to come across.

     

    Entrance theme: Another Day by the Crown City Rockers. Subject to change based upon who Vince can get more money from.

     

    Lilian Garcia:

    Weighing in at 185 lbs. from El Paso, TX, it's EVP!

     

    He wrestles in a WWE-logo sleeveless T with the Mexico flag on the back and black Adidas tracksuit pants. "Regular" white wrestling boots with Mexican flags on the outer flank, usually covered by the pants. Black elbow and knee pads and white-taped wrists and thumbs. His hair is a little longer than shoulder length, straight, mousy brown, matted down so it's in his face when he's in the ring. Black eye makeup like the Crow or Sting, theatrical but not flashy. Eyes only, not full-face.

     

    His style is not pure lucha but borrows from the American cruiserweight style most evident in athletes like the Jeff Hardy and the Motor City Machineguns. Best attributes durability and endurance. Mainly plays the face since his English isn't very good but he can play to the crowd.

     

    Finishers: Houston Hangover (450 legdrop from the turnbuckle) and Over Castle (flipping reverse bulldog from the top rope), and his patented S-Bend (reverse armbar with leg choke).

     

    Many of his set-pieces are pure lucha. His most exciting is a figure-4 neck lock in the ropes combination, breaking on the four-count flipping down outside on the floor onto his feet and the opponent prone in the ring, which sets up a slingshot Senton splash.

     

    Too much? Wrong kind? Am I too into this?

    I don't actually play with the Hero system since my table gang likes AD&D. But it makes real sense for SPDs to stay low for all the reasons stated. The best reason though is it allows VIPER agents and so forth to give the heroes fits.

     

    The problem is the tragedy of the commons- since nobody wants to see the "other guy" get more GM time (a finite resource), it makes sense for each individual player to make his or her playing piece with a relatively high SPD, even though this means SPD creep will slow the overall experience to a glacier's pace.

     

    This problem can be solved if 1) you are all rolling toons up there at the table together, and 2) each person has a decent enough intuitive grasp of what it means to have a "low-SPD" campaign versus a "high-SPD" campaign. Otherwise, a player will feel arbitrarily restricted, and hurt feelings may come. With some experience or good maths skills or a lot of time here on the Hero boards, these things are easy to grasp. Otherwise, they're really not.

     

    How can you describe to someone who is used to a normal "everyone's a SPD 1" combat system that the difference between SPD 2 and SPD 4 is much greater than the difference between SPD 4 and 6? It won't make any sense until you try out a few different SPDs and try them in relation to various SPD relationships. It would be like trying to explain special relativity to a caveman.

     

    Actually, that is a terrible analogy. A caveman could conceptually grasp special relativity. It would be more like trying to explain the allure of watching a nil-nil draw in soccer to an American. As in, it can't be done until the American has a grasp of the finer points of soccer. And it can't really be explained why low SPD is better to someone without experience playing Hero, even if they've played D&D for 20 years- even if they've been watching basketball their whole life.

    OK. Got it. He is Class 10 Strength. Which in Marvel's old FASERIP system translates to Incredible (40). Which is where I got the 40 ton figment from.

     

    He is class 10 strength. Which means he can lift about 10 tons without Pushing. About STR 43 in Hero system.

    Actually, there's no evidence that he's the peak of Power Broker's abilities. His strength is paltry compared to some of the people Power Broker has worked on. USAgent can press 40 tons, and he was a Power Broker product. In fact, Power Broker's treatment can go awry and confer so much strength that the recipient's body structure cannot support the added muscles/power, and needs to be augmented by a metal exoskeleton.

     

    But yeah, D-Man would be like the #3 contender for the ECW championship.

    I’ll be fleshing out some things in time. I have a bit of a backstory already and plan on turning this into a full character. Do you think he’s under-powered for a 350pt game? Does his skill set make sense? Is there any horribly obvious flaws?

    No, there are no obvious flaws. He seems a little light on base STR and DEX for a pure martial artist, and the staff element, again, might be a little weak (6d6 when he has all the other more powerful options), but that's balanced by the reach. And the MP is neat.

    Come to think of it, Wolverine and Daredevil would be really strange characters for someone who lives in the MU to want to homage. Neither one of them has a high profile in their universe. More likely to see someone homaging the Avengers or Fantastic Four. For as guy like D-Man, maybe an homage to Thor would be better.

    Wow! Except for the random "Staff" Weapon Element and silly amounts of Leaping, it's about as good as what most people come up with whole cloth. BTW what does a staff have to do with "panther" martial arts anyway? These are things that are easily fixed manually.

     

    I wonder though if there is a lot of variation in outputs, or are all "martial artists" close variations on a single theme?

     

    Also: Do you need to enter a "character archetype," as it were, or do you define the character concept through many variables?

    That does make sense to me. Although, the characters are not going to walk around saying to each other, "I have a 50 Active point MP and you only have a 30." So it makes sense on one level and it's kind of confusing on another.

     

    Have you considered: what a character is depends upon how he sees himself (or, how the player sees the character, more properly). Witness the Slingers, four different takes on Spider-Man's power set without altering points except for those for gadgets, and it was really like four different superheroes. So it's not all about relative point levels.

     

    But I see your point. Would you take another look at the other superheroes and make sure they're built properly? Sounds like too much work to me but it's an idea. Honestly I think everyone is built adequately even though Patriot has a larger number of points dedicated to gadgets than the other two gadget based heroes.

    Mmmmm Lucha Hero. My guy will be El Viento Poderoso AKA EVP AKA "The Mighty Wind" (literal translation) AKA "The Hurricane". He's about 75 KG and wears Crow style eye makeup instead of a mask.

     

    Can you have a Luchador without a mask?

    These are all so great. I can't say enough in praise of these. I especially love how Patriot came out.

     

    A note for Jim: "Taser", not "Teaser". Although I am sure more than one fanboy can come up with a good character sheet for a superhero woman named Teaser.

    D-Man designed his own costume to be an homage to Wolverine and Daredevil, which is why it looks like an homage to Wolverine and Daredevil.

     

    And for the record I've got no ideas of ownership of any character I dissect and analyze. I'm happy someone else has some love for D-Man!

    It's an elitist thing. He's a fanboy like the rest of us; he's a wrestler, for goodness' sake; and he actually uses his powers to help a forgotten community underground instead of fighting for fame and glory and so forth.

     

    Plus he smells really bad.

     

    I like D-Man too. I think he gets the respect he deserves from those who count- the readers.
