  1. Re: Complications Tips and Advice I agree with your post Main man. One thing though is to make sure that players understand this concept. some players might be under the impression of I'll take the logical disadvantages (complications) and not realize that the paradigm has shifted. For example, older editions, everyone took secret ID, sometimes it didn't make sense. Now that we are focusing on what you want to happen in game, a player my not want to deal with the hassle therefore just because it makes sense, don't take it. Historical note-Style disdavantage for martial arts was created to help pay for points, but not so much to hinder a character. Though later additions gave rules to make the disadvantage a disadvantage.
  2. Re: Ars Tactica Don't foget though that martial escape can be applied to tk-grabs. It may not make sense but them are rules ; )
  3. Re: GM vs Player narrative authority How can rules be common ground if you don't like the tactic "it says in the rulebook"? I take it to mean that though in the aproach of being nasty as saying "its in the rulebook page xyz" not "um I have a question, I looked at the modifier for doing this stunt and it says x why is it why?" I try to apply the Golden rule to GMing. That is I try treat the players the way I would like to be treated.
  4. Re: Hand-to-Hand Limitation Question I thought it was that Steve Long thought that HAa should cost 5 active points. Just like the guideline 5pts per 1 DC but since HA is limited (and HA previsously costed 3 pts) the limitation brings it back to (roughly) the original cost.
  5. Re: GM vs Player narrative authority I funny thought struck me. First let me make it clear that I understand where the side with GM are coming from. We pride ourselves in this game that the special effect is seperate from the mechanical effect. We all know that a blast whether its defined as a rock, punch, or ping-pong ball all have the same mechanical effects. Now if we apply this notion to epically drunk, isn't it just a "special effect" of drunk? I can see the player just trying to ham it up or roleplay his drunkeness yet not expecting a harsher treatment for it.
  6. Re: Background Story Rewards Has anyone considered background skills? What I'm going to suggest that perhaps if someone has a decent background then maybe adjust the background skills to reflect his story? In my mind, it all works out-however trying to form it into words is something else entirely. Some things I would suggest are perhaps perks that cost 1 pt, such as blackbelt and license to practice a job could be given in background instead of out of character points. And also the PS-current occupation should also be given from this. Of course at the 2pt/11- level, and any higher would be straight character points. Maybe instead of having acting as a given the player would opt to switch it to streetwise do to his background. Something along those lines.

  8. Re: Should Abort be automatic? True, it couldn't be as simple as I said
  9. Re: Should Abort be automatic? Exactly Hugh, I don't think I was as clear as possible. Take all that you said and when Princess Leia said that was too easy, they let us go. The theory on TV Tropes says that perhaps the Stormtroopers on the Death Star missed on purpose and knew that they were going to be hit, now that's some discipline! But what does everyone it seems remember? That Stormtroopers can't hit squat. WEG had stats for stormtroopers that weren't that good.
  10. Re: Should Abort be automatic? Why should they? Here is a few reasons why agents shouldn't: Representing source material/Tropes: If playing Star Wars, Stormtroopers don't show that they are highly skilled though the claim is made. But according to TV tropes, one reason was as Princess Leia said "They let us go" perhaps they missed on purpose. Also ninja never attack in groups, always one at a time. Roleplaying Combat: Take VIPER for instance, I have the standard agents not using optional manuever because they are just goons with technology. The five-man team from the BBB of course they have more of the optional rules, they are trained agents designed to take on supers. Metagame: If I run a more Romantized (versus Realistic) game, why should I give mooks an advantage over the hero or the villian? I don't have as deadly killing attacks for the game for the same reason. Game master: I don't want to use the rule because a)I'm not familiar yet with it. It slows down the game. c) Players aren't familiar with it and I'm teaching the basics first. Like I said previous, I do see reasons why the agents should be able to use the rules too. But to me, it comes down to (as with just about everything else in this game) is it going to enhance the game, and fun for all? If yes, then add it, if no then don't.
  11. Re: GM vs Player narrative authority I'd go with the -2 penalty just to save argument.
  12. Re: A bit of clarification needed with sawed-off shotguns I think that the fumble (for ammo at least) is that you shoot the ground before you.
  13. Re: Background Story Rewards Thought I put in 3 for strength-whoops
  14. Re: Should Abort be automatic? Btw Hugh my standard VIPER agents do have lower stats to reflect their more normalness. I used Type 1 from the Gadgets books and I even gave them speed 2. (Though spped 2 is boring when fighting my daughters speed 6, perhaps I'll switch them up to speed 3). And I keep musing that (at least as of 5th ed) Dive for Cover is considered an optional manuever. Even though in every game I've played in, its considered a standard manuever.
  15. Re: Ars Tactica Did you know that with contortsion roll you can add to your break out roll at 1D6 per 1 that you made your roll. That can help with against weak entangles.
  16. Re: Should Abort be automatic? Ok Hugh wasn't the DEX 5? But that's neither here nor there. And technically Gramps has the reflexes well enough to attempt the dive for cover and if I did the math right, he has a 9- chance to succeed. But I understand the point, it does make you think-how cn that happen? Myself I just chaulk it up the some of the vagrancies of the game. By the way, I noticed the discussion went from agents to elite agents. I agree that if I was using elites, then they would use things such as dive for cover. However, so far I have been using VIPER standard agents and since my version of these agents are goons with "super" guns, they don't have the training to do all those fancy manuevers!
  17. Re: Should Abort be automatic? Two things Chirstopher. 1)What does END have to do combat values? 2) Yeah I never said that Gramps should or probally would have the Combat values in 6th either. I was just pointing out that since you now have to buy OCV and DCV seperately in 6th, and if you missed it, (i.e. both have the same OCV and DCV) you could have a bigger disconnect with the Gramps blocking a speedster.
  18. Re: Should Abort be automatic? I assume (and please correct me if I'm wrong) but we're talking about 6th ed here and I couldn't notice that the one problem of having CV as a seperate characteristic is that in theory, the above examples have the same combat value. Therefore the 80 yo has an 11- chance to block the speedster! Whereas if we were talking pre-6th then the CV for the Speedster would be 13 and the 80 yo would be technically 2 (but generously a three) so gramps blockin would be 2-13+11=0. So unless the speedster has unluck or rolls a 3 then gramps is going to miss and the speedster hits. To sum up though the question at hand, cinematically, the mechanic works fine. If you want a more "realistic" game then block shouldn't be automatic. Have you guys tried to block a punch? Its alot harder than it seems.
  19. Re: Background Story Rewards Never played a game with the sudden death syndrome, but rolling a three for a dwarf in D&D and not allowing to change it was disapointing.
  20. Re: Quantum from Dragon Magazine #111, 1986 by George MacDonald I have a couple of White wolf magazines that were like that before it became its own rpg. I still have a D&D adventure that could beused for a few other fantasy games.
  21. Re: Facing and Passing Sean what did you think about the wounding rule?
  22. Re: Dancing Diamonds (5threv) Also remebered to buy personal immunity or he is going to get affected like everyone else!
  23. Re: Virtual Reality addiction? How about he only views the world through virual reality lenses? (I can't remeber where I got that idea from but its not my own). So it would be maybe a physical limitation as in reduced PER roll. the story that is vaguely in my head, described that the people saw everthing in something like 8-bit video, they don't want to see the real world. So perhaps its virual non reality? And if forced to face the real world, perhaps a penalty to Dex and combat rolls?
