  1. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... Just read Brian Ruckley's "Winterbirth" and "Bloodheir", the first two books in a series. While not a BAD read, it's sort of the endless narration/character development of Robert Jordan mixed with low-fantasy could-we-please-get-to-the-evil storylines of George RR Martin. Again, not a BAD read, but not something you plow through in a weekend.
  2. Re: A DC Animated-style HeroMachine Good enough! Thanks, Egyptoid! (and repped!)
  3. Re: A DC Animated-style HeroMachine Without having to go through all 126 pages of this forum (though there are some excellent pics seen via perusal), is there an English version of this? Simply curious...I can make-do, of course, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks.
  4. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... Great read. The next book, "Red Seas Under Red Skies" is equally as good. Scott Lynch is quite talented and a worthy inheritor of the Fafhrd and Mouser style of thieves-as-heroes style. Reading "Winterbirth" by Brian Ruckley, myself. So far so good. Similar to Erickson but perhaps a touch more traditional in some ways. Prior to that I read Joe Abercrombie's series, including "The Blade Itself", "Before They Are Hanged" and "Last Argument of Kings". I couldn't put 'em down. Highly recommended for fans of epic fantasy in the better-than-Jordan-as-good-as-Martin-not-quite-as-good-as-G.G.Kay genre. But that's just me
  5. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... "Twisting the rope".
  6. Re: A Thread for Random Musings I should've said no to so many things...
  7. Re: A Thread for Random Musings "Wurdle wurdle" has to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a comic book.
  8. Re: Opinion wanted about coverage of Detect Life Force power I agree with pretty much everything above. Disc/anal (and yeah, that does look dirty) would allow a person to not only know what sort of life force they were detecting (a middle-aged male in reasonably good health), but would allow them to recognize that particular life force again. Which could be problematic at some point, especially when the middle-age male in reasonably good health has the same exact life force as a particular hero or villain in your campaign... The one thing I don't agree on is the "is there life" question. If you're looking at a body yeah, you can say "is that alive?", but if you're casting about in the dark and there's nothing but corpses (whether you know they're there or not), then no, nothing happens, not "you detect vessels that formerly held life forces". Not sure if Badger was goin' for that or not, but I thought I'd offer my opinion anyway Discriminatory would allow the person to filter out bacteria, insects and so on, too, so you could concentrate on "big" life forms/forces. Probably.
  9. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... At this point I pretty much will buy all three authors' books without checking. Stackpole's 'Draconis' series and "Once a Hero" are some of my favorites. Gemmell is (was) another, and Mike Resnick is yet another. Love Resnick's sci-fi. Love it.
  10. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Most excellent read.
  11. Re: A Thread for Random Musings The third puppy is most definitely not the charm.
  12. Re: Storn's Art & Characters thread. I missed this thread...
  13. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Had to work last night. Not bartend so much as cover karaoke and do a little extra catch-up work on the books. I also got to throw a guy out for being a putz, but had to listen to a couple of bar-tards drone on endlessly about nothing in particular. It's part of the job, I know, but Mondays are supposed to be my day off. In any case, I came to a startling conclusion during all this guff: My girl is hawt
  14. Re: A Thread for Random Musings I spent a year getting my life in order. Not that it was totally out of whack, but sometimes it takes that long to undo the kinks, y'know? So anyway, one year after I quit my last job, about 7 months after leaving the band, and about a year since I did any gaming...I'm in a PBEM again and I'm on the boards again, and suddenly my life has taken an icky turn. I haven't even spent that much time on gaming--we're talking a couple hours a week, tops--but things are definitely heading for the crapper. Work stress, personal relationship stress, and school stress, all in one week. Coincidence? Gawd I hope so...
  15. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... Just finished "Cursor's Fury", the third book in the fantasy series by Jim Butcher (of "Dresden Chronicles" fame). I really enjoy that series. Good fantasy campaign material with a bit of a Roman foundation. Of note, Butcher's next offering in the Dresden Chronicles, "White Night", (9th in the series) comes out tomorrow. I have it on pre-order so I should get it within the week.
  16. Re: Storn's Art & Characters thread. Heya, Storn. It's been awhile since I've perused your thread (well, any threads, actually), but I wanted to say "good work as usual". This was one of only a handful of threads that I actually missed during my "away time". By the way, how's yer schedule lookin'? Also, since I have in mind a character that's kinda difficult even for me to describe, do you do "quick sketch" ideas prior to full commissions? I'm leery of either of us trying to get this right the first time, but I'm also eager to get a pic made (not in a hurry, mind you, just eager). Thanks in advance, kind sir!
  17. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Didn't know where else to ask: besides being woefully behind on my Hero Games shopping (7 books + the commemorative edition...sheesh!), have I missed anything I should know about? It's been not-quite five months--just curious.
  18. Re: The "Nice Happy" Thread Dell XPS 600 fully loaded. Pentium D 3 Ghz 1GB Dual Channel RAM 160GB Hard Drive Dual DVD-ROM/DVD+RW drives NVidia Geforce...um...7800 (I think) video card. 512MB Sound Blaster X-Fi 5.1 19" Flat Panel $2k debt I got a bunch of extras and such, mainly cuz I had a discount. This is the first computer I've purchased with full warranty and all the fixins (as opposed to those friends & coworkers have helped put together/configure), so I figured I'd go all out just this once. I wanted a 'puter that I could grow with, not one that I could grow out of...at least for a while.

  20. Re: The "Nice Happy" Thread New 'puter 'Nuff said.
  21. Re: Musings on Random Musings I'm hoping. I'll have to keep a day job for a while (probably at less pay than I was getting with IBM), but I'm also starting barbacking next month with the potential of picking up a Sunday night shift soon thereafter, the idea being to determine if I really want to do this. I've spent all of my adult life in bars. I've done everything you can do except bartend. I've been a bouncer, a barback, a karaoke host, a DJ and a line cook. Now, I don't want to work or own a bar&grill just yet, but the experience was useful. The point is, bars are what I know and love. I know I can do this on a mental and emotional level; it's a matter of being able to transition financially (i.e. I ain't selling the house to bartend). I've become good friends with the owner of my favorite neighborhood watering hole, and after talking at length with him about bartending and (hopefully) owning my own place one day, his reply was something along the lines of a knowing smile and "About time you realized what we all knew." He has offered me anything I need to get started--training, a job, advice, etc--anything except a loan and/or the keys to his bar. He's even intimated he'd work for me if I ever get a place of my own, just to help get things going. You can't do much better than having a ready-made mentor in place if you wanna switch careers. Hopefully this'll all work out. In the meantime, back to the job searches...
