I would however caution using this method (in general) as allowing characters and players to create spells on the fly can slow down combat immensely.

a parent with black hari can have a blone or red allelle and thus contribute to the child being blonde or ginger.
A blonde or rad-haired parent can;t have any black hair gens because blonde and ginger is recessive and can only be expressed if both genes are blonde or ginger respectively.
