Been following this thread for a while now. Nearly posted a few times. Wrote long posts that never got submitted because threads like this are why I left these boards for over a year and now I am back only really post in "Non-gaming" and "General roleplaying" forums. Still, here goes:

"Mechanically best" - no idea what that means and care even less.

From my point of view 6e changed loads of things in Champions that gave it its flavour; To solve problems I never experienced; Which when explained to me made me wonder if those games had a GM? Worst still, those problems were placed ahead of the real problems that Hero System suffered from, which was all about getting people to play the game.

If you spend any time in other gaming forums you will know that the "consensus" is that Hero is Complex, Hero is Slow, GURPS is better. Did we do anything to change that? We produced a big, enourmous, blue book. ? At a time when the market direction was for small and simple and quick and old skool. Great job!

Finally I think "The Story of COM" is very representative of where its all gone wrong imo. No new player ever had to ask what COM was. It was a dirt-cheap points sink. It provided 10 minutes of fun at the start of every campaign while we worked out who was the prettiest. Now we have "Striking Appearance" ?

I think we built a game that was perfect for a small group of people on this forum, which is unsellable to the general gaming public. Harsh, but I think true. At least we have some pretty covers again.

Sorry to jump ahead and I don’t know if this has been addressed elsewhere. If so, apologies.

Hero Games built a game to address these problems. It was called Champions: New Millennium (a.k.a. Fuzion) and most people (besides me) HATED IT. After that level of epic failure, why should Hero Games try anything like that again? Everybody says they want a simpler, faster version of Hero, but I honestly don’t see anyone here accepting it, not when Comeliness (the dumpstat to end all dumpstats) is so controversial.

I mean if you were gonna streamline HS, what would you get rid of? What would you keep? And are the people here - the loyal customers - all gonna be okay with that? Will you gain more customers than you lose? Does anybody here want to put up their own money to test that?

A lot of the inspiration for Champions Now came from essays in Champions II, Champions III and Strike Force rather than the core books.

6e has some comparable essays, but they don't tend to say the same things as the 3e ones.

The mechanical divergence means that the Champions Now drafts only resemble 3e more than 6e in terms of their length and specific focus on superheroes.

    It's a different game.

    Unfortunately, so was Fuzion.

Outside of the art, I'm one of the few people who liked Fuzion. I never got to play Champions: New Millenium, but I really liked creating characters in that system. It just felt clean and streamlined in a way that HERO 3-5 never did.

  3. How is this different from schizophrenia? I could see the media or some pop-psychologist (Dr. Phil?) calling it that, but I can't see this becoming a separate disorder. At least not for several years and not necessarily by that name.

FTR, I am not a psychiatrist (I don't even play one on TV ?) so I could be wrong.

    And go!

(Just for the record, I am not a fan of the Dark Knight stuff either. It's okay, not great.)

Off the top of my head (and in no particular order):

    1. Spider-Man (Sam Raimi version)

    2. Superman the Movie

    3. Avengers

    4. Wonder Woman

    5. Green Lantern

    Kidding!

    5. Captain America: Civil War

Also, I'm not supposed to say this, but I wasn't enthused about Black Panther. It was good, but, as of this writing it isn't one of my favourites.

I know this will probably get me banned, but I have to say it.

The Dark Knight trilogy is overrated.

The Dark Knight was a great movie if overly violent, and seemed to be more a James Bond movie at times.

Batman Begins was too slow in the set up, and was redeemed by Batman's last line to Ras.

The Dark Knight Rises has Catwoman, some impressive special effects, but has enough plot holes to fly the Batplane through.

Why would having an opinion get you banned? There's an entire thread on the board called Destroy Your Geek Cred that's entirely about stuff like this.

As far as the Dark Knight Trilogy, yeah it's okay, but not great. I could name 5 comic book movies  and 10 "mainstream" movies that are better. That's just off the top of my head.

  6. Sorry, I don't know if anyone posted this (I'm too lazy to go through 10 pages of posts), but has anyone see this? I've been reading the old "Monster Society of Evil" story line on here. This site would make a good reference point if you wanted to make period appropriate stories.

Sadly they don't have any of the old Timely/Atlas (Golden Age Marvel) or National Periodicals (Golden Age DC) comics. They do have the old Marvel Family comics (Fawcett), Archie/MLJ, and Quality.

  7.  I have to agree with "Sociotard" re "Dune". Overrated, derivative (the personal shields that mean people use blades was lifted straight from a novel by Charles Harness) and inferior to the book with which it tied for the Hugo Award ("And Call Me Conrad"- Roger Zelazny).

I didn't see this comment when it was posted. All I'll say is that Roger Zelazny was an amazing writer. I haven't read or heard of the book you mentioned, but if I find a copy I'll be sure to check it out.

  8. My favorite Bruce Willis movie is "The Fifth Element".

I have never seen the original Die Hard. I saw and barely remember the second and fourth movies.

I guess it's time for me to destroy my geek cred by jumping in and saying that I think The Fifth Element is one of the most overrated movies of all time.

I've never understood the hype surrounding the Fifth Element. There are better movies people.

    Here are the rest:

I hate Marvel. Passionately. I won't touch a Marvel Comic unless my life depends on it (and maybe not even then). I like the movies. The movies are f--king brilliant (with two exceptions). Just keep the comics away from me. And no, Ike, making Captain America a black guy won't work on me. You're still Marvel. Stop being Marvel and I will buy some of your comics. Nuff said.

I hate Wolverine and Spider-Man. Peter Parker is comic's most annoying whiner. Wolverine has boring powers and is a child's idea of what a tough guy is like.

I hated the first Iron Man movie. Seriously people, what was so special about it?

I hated the first Captain America movie (First Avenger, not the direct to video one, the made for TV one from the 70s, or the movie serial. Those were competent.) Cap should be punching Hitler dammit! Winter Soldier and Civil War were amazing. I'm going to miss Chris Evans when he retires. He's the best embodiment of God, Mom, and apple pie since Christopher Reeve.

I hate Batman. It took me several years and much soul searching to figure out why. I think it comes down to the fact that the post-Dark Knight Returns Batman is the most juvenile character ever created. He's like a teenage boy's view of himself. He's humourless, he has to be the best at everything, and he's in an eternal d--k measuring contest with the entire Justice League (cause no one's explained Wonder Woman to him yet). Does anybody remember when Batman was friends with his fellow superheroes? Does anybody remember when he wasn't being eternally emo about his dead parents? I do. I remember when Bruce was serious, but not grim and wangsty. He didn't smile, but good God, he could at least crack a deadpan joke!

In my opinion, Superman is the greatest superhero ever created. There. I said it.

I hate "classic" Battlestar Galactica and I've never seen enough of the new one to form an opinion.

I'm yet another person who's never gotten very far with Tolkien. The Hobbit was better than Fellowship, but I've never finished either. I might try again at some point.

    I like Voyager.

    I hate Arrow.

As much as I like David Tennant, I still think Christopher Eccleston was the best of the nuWho Doctors.

I think Stephen Moffat has done an amazing job and I'm going to miss him when he's gone.

Jar Jar Binks was horrible, but he wasn't the worst thing in the Star Wars prequels. The worst thing in the Star Wars prequels was Hayden Christiansen's emo psychopath.

    I like Final Crisis.

I've never played Vampire in any version. I've never played D&D for more than a night,

I've never played WoW or City of Heroes. I've never owned any Playstations. In fact, I've never gotten into video games.

I think Jim Lee is overrated. I can see why people like him, but I can also see that he's a terrible storyteller who makes his writers look the same.

I think comics fans need to find a better target than Rob Liefeld. Yeah he can't draw, but at this point, every time someone mentions it it feels like beating up on the nice, developmentally delayed kid. There are lots of reasons to hate Rob Liefeld. Could we go after his character and give the art thing a rest?

I like classic Star Trek, but I don't worship Gene Roddenbury. The guy was kind of weird and not in a good way. All the best stuff in Trek was invented by Gene L. Coon among others. Let's give them some of the credit. Okay?

I don't worship George Lucas either. Star Wars was fun when I was a kid, but let's not turn this into something it isn't. You want great Sci-fi? Dune. 1984. Farenheit 451, Brave New World. Slaughterhouse Five. The Star Wars movies are fun. That's all.

I've never cosplayed. I want to, but I can't think of anyone I wouldn't look stupid as.

I've never played Warhammer or any other miniatures game.

I own 2 decks of Magic cards. Never touched 'em.

That's all for now. If I think of any more I'll add them.

  9. Just a radical thought here: Could we judge the movie after it comes out? It probably will suck (it was made way too late for Warner's to accurately judge the backlash against BvS), but we won't know for sure until the movie's released. Right now it exists in a state of quantum uncertainty.

(Apologies to all the physicists on the board. High school physics bored the sh** out of me.)

Also, why are people picking on Gal Gadot because of her figure? Has anyone gone after Hugh Jackman for not being short or Christopher Reeve for not looking like a '60s Curt Swan drawing?

  10. An observations from these boards from a few years back: "Voters put more stock in the threats of their enemies than the promises of their friends." That is, they know that the person they vote for probably won't deliver what they promised, but the other guy, who promises things they don't like, would deliver all that and more.

And suddenly I see this from the other side.

This Trump voter didn't think Trump was serious about repealing her health insurance

Tribalism run amok: Now Donald Trump voters are worried he might take their Obamacare away

Trump promised to repeal Obamacare, but it turns out Americans like most of it, a poll finds

Talk about your buyer's remorse. I have pretty good insurance. I hope lower-income Trump supporters are taken care of.

Am I the only one who has an immense feeling of schadenfreude?

I am a very evil person.

  11. If the Supergirl President is Marsdin, the then Flash/Arrow President would be Moultin.

More likely to be President Broome. Or Fox. Or Weisinger. Since this is the "Arrowverse" probably Weisinger.

(Though if you ask me, the President of Supergirl's America should be President Binder. But then we wouldn't have had the nice tribute to Linda Carter, so I'm okay with it.)

  12. That seems to be a familiar and easy trope for comic book writers these days.  Marvel had the X-Men (Inhumans in the MCU), and DC has it's Aliens.

I think Miss Martian is going to become Hank's Love Interest on the show.

    Wasn't she his adopted niece?

  13. I admit I was a teensy bit disappointed that they went the "you cant trust superheroes" route with Cadmus, just because I reeeeealy feel that meme has been overshared lately. But at least it's clear that it's the Bad Guys spouting it.

That was kind of the default mode for Superheroes in the late 30s to early 40s. Yes, even for Superman. Then DC (National) realized that kids love these things and all of a sudden, Batman's deputized and Superman is telling his secret identity to the President.

Because he needed someone to pretend to be Clark Kent and Batman wasn't available. I miss Silver Age DC. :weep:
