  1. I was trying to think of some way to have powers that are based on vocalization (anything requiring Incantations, a sonic scream, etc.) simply not work when this silencing power is activated. Should I be looking at Darkness, Suppress, or Dispel? And would this also cover Flashes vs. Hearing?

  2. Re: Crisis of Infinite Boredom

I'm not sure Irving's capable of being bored-- after all, it took him a century to decide to wake up and start looking around. He'd probably be happy just to go into Central Park and listen to street entertainers, have long discussions with soapbox ranters, watch the chess players...

  3. Re: Sample Oddity From Gestalt-Earth

So what constitutes a villainous Food Gestalt... a Vegan with Mental Illusions who can make soy meat substitutes taste good?

Actually, that'd be a righteous talent. A much better Vegan Food Gestalt villain would be one who makes people violently allergic or sickened whenever they ingest animal protein.

Sounds harmless enough on the surface... but what about infants at the breast?

ETA: Or consider the damage done to a food web/ecosystem when the predators can no longer eat.

  4. Re: The Invisibles Writeups

Hmm... I still think it'd be funny to give Edna some kind of power based on her ability to completely overwhelm people by sheer force of personality (it need not be the one I thought of in the other thread on her). I also began to think, later on, that her ability to assess supers' abilities might transcend the Analyze skill (which is meant more for in-combat analysis) and actually be something along the lines of Detect Superpowers as a Sense, Ranged and Discrimnatory (which is either 17 or 22 points depending on how big a group you decide Superpowers is; I was looking at the Detect Magic example in FREd).

  5. Re: Edna "E." Mode!

How about Restrainable... if you can cover her mouth, you have a chance...

Yeah, that's probably a sufficient model for the vocalizing without twisting the standard Incantations limitation.

[bTW, saw FREdR at my FLGS. It's a freakin' tome.]

  6. Re: Edna "E." Mode!

i would think that power would need incantations?

It probably does, but FREd explicitly notes that Incantations "can't double as normal conversation".

This brings up the question of whether ANY of Edna's conversations are normal...

Meta: you may be right about delayed effect.

To be honest, since I whomped this up on the spur of a moment, anyone can have a go at modifying it (including the power's name; I was never quite happy with it). Heck, zornwil should come have a look since he's working on an Edna writeup proper...

  7. Re: Edna "E." Mode!

I think Edna would be far too proud to admit to ANY flaw in any of her designs. I also don't think she'd design power armor, as most weapons systems, unless they're something *very* small like Syndrome's wristbands, would doubtlessly spoil the lines of her designs.

However, letting my mind wander this evening had me coming up with this power:

Overwhelming Conversationalist: Drain EGO 1d6, Armor Piercing x1 (+1/2), Reduced Endurance 0 END (+1/2), Based On EGO Combat Value (Mental Defense; +1), Cumulative (x4 max.) (+1); Requires A Skill Roll [Conversation] (-1/2) plus Drain PRE 1d6, Armor Piercing x1 (+1/2), Reduced Endurance 0 END (+1/2), Based On EGO Combat Value (Mental Defense; +1), Cumulative (x4 max.) (+1) ; Requires A Skill Roll [Conversation](-1/2); 80 Active Points, 54 Real Points

  8. Re: Is there such a thing as TOO evil?

Good thing I didn't post the URL of the Japanese guy who spent a few hours torturing a stray cat he found to death-- and taking pictures. (Even the jaded and cynical Portal of Evil found that one hard to take.)

Putting this back into the context of fiction, the "Born to Die" story might've actually had some fascination/repulsion if I read it in a book; in RL it's just revolting. This would probably also be true of Seven's John Doe, Lecter, and many other fictional nasties.

  9. Re: Unused Bird/Flying Creature Motifs

Great, I'm hearing the opening theme for Woody Woodpecker:

Huhuhaha huhuhuhaha! That's the Woody Woodpecker song!

I just remember the Soaring Red Pecker from The Tick comic book.

Funny how he never made it into any of the TV shows.

  10. Re: Team Tactics

Cannon-ball special (oops' date=' copyright Marvel Enterprises  )[/quote']

Marvel calls it the Fastball Special, actually, so Cannonball is okay.

Or, given the pre-Hugh Jackman design of Wolverine, dwarf tossing.

  11. I noted in the FAQ that it's considered allowable to constantly assign one common limitation in a Variable Limitation setup, but what if you have a small set of common limitations that don't all occur at once?

This grew out of thinking of Frozone's powers-- he definitely has the common ice-power limitation "Will Not Work in Hot/Dry Conditions" but it looks like he can sometimes swap that out for the Side Effect "Dehydrates Self When Powers Used" (for some risk of damage). But those are the *only* two limitations and they don't occur simulataneously. Would this be treated as Variable Limitation that just happens to have two forms?

  12. Re: The Incredibles -- WITH SPOILERS

The family was def. a Fantastic Four homage' date=' and I [i']think[/i] one of the two old farts at the end saying "They're back, they're back..." was supposed to be Stan Lee (I don't know who the other guy was supposed to be), but were there ANY DC homages in the film?

Actually, the old guys were Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston.

Director Brad Bird had them in The Iron Giant too.

  13. Re: The Incredibles -- WITH SPOILERS

I thnk Syndrome (Sindrome? - I saw someone else on the board spell it that way) might be alive, although I'd hope they'd save that for a 3rd or 4th sequel and not just have a rematch too soon.

He got sucked into a jet engine. I doubt he made it out, although they could always evoke the old standby of "they never DID find a body."

As for sequels... the problem is, Disney owns the rights to this film, not Pixar, which means after Pixar leaves the partnership next year it'd be Disney making the films, not Pixar.

And Disney's track record for the last several years wRT animated films has been a depressing slide into crap. Lilo and Stitch was the last gasp-- and that crew no longer works for the studio.

  14. Re: Teen Heroes & Static Shock

Anyone catch the Static Shock ep where Batman and Robin (the Tim Drake one, presumably) end up visiting because the Joker's decided to move to new turf and recruit some of the Bang Babies?

Trying to reconcile the Bruce Timm stylizations with Static Shock's character designs looked a bit odd.
