Sorry to necro the post - but wanted to clarify the comment around not needing the API (i.e. a Roll20 subscription). So in-game, with this bundle, Body and Stun dice will be calculated and displayed correctly without the API (i.e. in a free account)?

Just to be clear, The Hero System Character Sheet calculates BODY and STUN. It doesn't require the Champions Complete Compendium to do this. It is built in functionality of the character sheet and does not require a subscription to roll20.

  2. We are happy to let everyone know that the Roll20 Project's been submitted to Roll20 for review and approval and we should get a response within a week or two. Once that is done, assuming that we don't have to make any updates, the project will be ready to launch.

The Champions Complete Compendium package will be available for $29.99. Below we've included some additional information about it's content.

I'm very excited to see the work you're doing here.  I've already made and committed some improvements to the Hero System 6E character sheet on Roll20 in the past months and am working on a new sheet in which I hope to replicate most of the functionality in the HERO Designer.  If you already have someone working on a new character sheet, please let me know so that I'm not duplicating someone else's work.

jsherwood0 the only work that we've done on the character sheet is a preliminary design. I would like to discuss the changes your making after the roll20 project is launched in October. Feel free to PM me, or I'll reach out to you soon. Thanks!

What is the targeted cost for the consumer on this project?

I thought we answered this in another post, but just in case, the projected cost is $30

I have read your posts, and I am very happy to read of your progress as creators and authors for the Roll20 effort. Champions, particularly the superhero genre, is a game that has given me a device for enjoyment, escape, expression and political/social treatise on numerous occasions over the past 30-plus years.

If I may be so bold as to suggest some things you may want to offer for the Roll20 game experience:

An adventure or two in Meriquai Falls.

Adventure Club modules tweaked or amended to allow those of us who read/played them when they were released back in the day, to play these fine works today with Roll20.

Hudson City and its various resources from Dark Champions.

    Star Hero scenarios.

Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions. We are looking forward to the launch and success of this project so that we can offer additional products.

  5. Hello all,

It's been a little over a month since the last update, and wow as of this writing that last update has over 15,000 views. We hope that is a good indication of the excitement for this project and helps to keep more Roll20 projects coming in the near future.

We wanted to give you a bulleted update of the work in progress. As mentioned in a previous post, we're working hard to release this in October 2022, and despite some early delays in getting the account and the compendium started with Roll20 we're optimistic that we will hit that date. Here is a brief status of the scope of the work:

    • Champions Begins Player's Book: 100%
    • Champions Begins GM's Book (Includes Adventure): 95% (Only remaining items are maps. Currently completed 2 out of 8).
    • Champions Complete Compendium: 222 pages out of 413 pages completed (yes, that's 413 individual web pages for the Compendium). That equates to about 54%, but it's really not reflective of the work that's outstanding. A lot of the work already done was more time consuming than the remaining pages, if we were to put a level of effort completion number on it it's more like 70%.
    • Champions Complete: The Champions and Villain Characters and Tokens Add-On: 100%

As you can see, we are getting close to the finish line. We're really excited about rolling this out!

Lastly, here is another treat. This is the construction site for the Tanghal Towers, the second encounter in the Champions Begins Viper's Nest adventure. Lots of stuff for Bricks to throw around and smash. It's a big file, because it's a big map, so PM me if you want a smaller resolution version.

Nice, very much looking forward to it.

Will it work like D&D and Savage Worlds,  or will I need the API?

No API needed. However, to get the most of the Champions Begins package and Champions Complete characters you’ll want to use the Hero System 6E Character Sheet, but you don’t need anything but to add the Compendium to your game to get all the rules and search capabilities.

Hi, I've been playing Hero System, specifically Champions since childhood and bought its many iterations and have lately found myself wanting to return to it for my group on Roll20 but, being only slightly more tech-savvy than my septuagenarian parents, it's been tough. I was elated to find out about this project and I have questions. Lots of questions that are probably pretty stupid and answered elsewhere that I've simply failed to uncover. If you could humor me with a couple of them here I'd really appreciate it.

Number 1: I saw this is planned for release in Q4 of this year and I was just wondering if you had any more specific details of when at this time. If not, of course, no problem, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing it.

Number 2: Looks like this is a character sheet importer and Roll20 data library? I was wondering if you were working on including anything like a combat aid to include. Maybe scripts or macros to calculate hit numbers or track stun/body/end ar anything like that?

Regardless, I'm excited to see your project!  Thank you!

Hi. Thanks for the questions and no worries you can ask as many as you want to.

Number 1: We are aiming to release this sometime in October. It will depend mainly in how long roll20 will take to review all the material and approve it, so pinpointing down an exact release date right now is in flux because the work is still in progress. But the intent is early 4Q 2022.

Number 2: There are a couple of character sheets out there for Hero System. One is for heroic level games, and the other is for Champions. The Champions character has been out there for a while and it has some macros and automation, but it can be quirky to get everything right. But the learning curve is not too steep, and it works well. It also has functionality to help track END when you use powers, but you still have to press a button to get it to calculate, as well as macros to help roll and tabulate damage.

The character sheet importer also works pretty well. I've found that it doesn't import everything perfect all the time in more complex characters, but overall it's been a great time saver. In fact, I've used to import more than sixty character sheets for this product and it worked perfectly.

I would be happy to send you an invite to a shell game where I can show you how to use the importer and the character sheet. Just PM me and we can set something up.

So I can make a character in Hero Designer and import it to roll20?

Yes. As a matter of fact, that is how I uploaded the characters from Champions Complete and Champions Begins into Roll20 for the upcoming project. Here is a video link that shows you how to do it. Note, that you can now select the importer from a drop down in roll20 instead of copying the link.

  9. Hello everyone,

Between summer vacation and holidays, we haven't posted an update for several weeks, but work continued.

We did finally were able to meet with Roll20 to get the Compendium for Champions Complete going last week. Currently, we are working on updating the Structured-Data Template for the book. This template is basically used to organize the book's content into a format used to create the Compendium in Roll20. We're about 40% done with this process and hope to finalize it by the end of next week.

We've also continued to update the maps for the Viper's Nest Adventure using Blender. To give you a preview of the difference with using Blender, I'm attaching the updated version of the Lake Forest Cemetery. Let me know what you think!

As I may have mentioned before, the Viper's Nest adventure text, characters, villains are entered and completed in Roll20. We will finalize the maps in between updating the Compendium.

With the current progress, we've caught up with the timeline, so still looking at a 4Q release.

  10. Update for Week #5

    Hello everyone,

Just another quick update on the work done since the last update. We've gone back and did a final editing and proofread of the adventure, so the text copy for the adventure and the characters (including tokens) is done. The only thing left to complete this part of the project is to complete the maps.

As you may have seen, we posted a sample of the map for the Lake Forest Cemetery, and we've continued to work on the other maps of the adventure. To be honest, the delay in producing the maps is due to experimenting with Blender (a 3D modeling software) to see how we could use it to create the maps, and are looking toward using that software to create the maps for Roll20 using it.  The rationale for using Blender is that we can produce a 2D image file that we can upload to Roll20, but also use the same map for 3D tabletops such as Tabletop Simulator. There are also a lot of assets, many of them available for free, to use when doing 3D scenes, and so far we are making good progress in doing the maps. The delay came from the learning curve to learn to use it.

As far as schedule, we are a couple of weeks over the original estimate, but getting a Publisher account with Roll20 to start creating the Compendium has taken longer than expected. Hero Games signed the contract two weeks ago after waiting for a month to get a reply to their application. We still haven't gotten the Publisher account access, so even if we'd been done with the adventure on schedule, we would still be in the same place. The result is that we've gotten a little more time to explore options for the mapping, and to do a more complete edit and proofreading of the adventure.

You won't get another update for the following two weeks, as I will be taking an early Summer Vacation and will be out of the country without my laptop (my wife would kill me if I took it and worked while on vacation).

  11. Update for Week #3

Just wanted to give everyone an update on the progress for the project. Over the last two weeks we've continued to work on the Champions Begins Adventure, Viper's Nest, and have completed editing and uploading all of it. We've also created all the Player Character Pregens and Villains and uploaded them to Roll20 as well. The Pregens are each divided into their respective chapters, and additional information is added and a new character sheet is created for each chapter. Each character is loaded into the HeroSystem6e Roll20 character sheet. Likewise, each villain (21 in total) has their own character sheet.  Additionally, we've added tokens for all the Pregens and Villains.

Over the next week, we will redraw the maps and upload them to the adventure, before doing a final edit and proofreading while adding links to the various handouts. It looks like we will be about a week behind the original schedule, but the adventure and characters went through a substantial editing and proofreading effort which was not part of the original scope of the work. So, all in all, despite the additional effort, we are still progressing well toward the October 1st deadline.

Lastly, as part of the character generation process for roll20 we created the Hero Designer files for the Pregens. These files were not included as part of the PDF version currently available. We'll provide these to Hero Games so that they can add them to the package available through the Hero Store and through Drivethrurpg.

  12. There is a new character sheet that was recently made just for Heroic Campaigns on roll20 created by Villain in Glasses accessible in Game Settings called Hero System 6E Heroic.

There are community based folks working on other APIs like the JSON exporter for Hero Designer into roll20 that’s helping make things easier.

As far as official releases, the Compendium should start providing more functionality to make roll20 work better for Hero. We also are working on a new version of the character sheet to improve on the current HeroSystem6e Character Sheet (as soon as there’s a solid rollout date for it, we’ll post).

  13. We were able to get a lot accomplished this week for the Champions Begins GM Book & Adventure. We completed editing of Chapters 1 through 4, and added the content to the Roll20 Adventure that'll be included in the bundle. The work done this week concentrated on editing and proofreading the adventure, and formatting it for Roll20. It's just the copy text and art for now. The maps, characters, and tokens are planned for after the text content for the adventure is complete.

The plan for next week is to complete Chapter 5 by editing and formatting for Roll20 (making sure all the headers are consistent, another proofreading pass and such). Then doing a final edit and proofreading pass of the whole adventure. Additionally, we'll do a final review to particularly look for opportunities to include additional links in the text for easy access to references. For example, clicking on VIPER Agent in the text will open up the Character Sheet for it, or clicking the name of a Skill will open up a window with the description. As a stretch goal for the week, we will start adding the characters and character sheets. We'll start with the pre-generated characters first. That'll be a bit of work considering each pregen has a new character sheet per chapter.

Consider me chiming. Very Chiming. I go back to the original release of FH, and I'd love to see this effort support it. I'll shout as loud as I can. What's the best way for me to contribute? (Aside from sarcasm and run-on commentary?)

Heard loud and clear, but it’ll take more than a couple of voices crying out from the wilderness. IMO this first venture has to do well. If it’s well received then it may open up opportunities for additional projects.

  15. 27 minutes ago, Jkeown said:

By the sound of this, might it support Fantasy HERO as well?

Honestly, Jkeown, only so far as Champions Complete and Hero System supports Fantasy Hero which is to say only "loosely". Hero Games is trying something new here, and if it goes well, we would like to propose to the powers that be following it up with a Fantasy HERO specific compendium like this project. We are early into this project still, so as we get further into it, we're optimistic that we will start having a discussion about what comes next.

But, anyone interested in seeing a similar project for Fantasy Complete or Fantasy HERO, it's a good time to chime in and it may help with  deciding the next venture.

You are listing a HeroSystem6e character sheet update for Roll20. Are you aware that there is an existing importer for the HeroSystem6e character sheet? It is currently in version 5 and actively supported (by me). If you would like to coordinate reach out and we can chat. I can be reached here or on the Hero Discord as eepjr24.

    Hey E,

I know the importer well and have used it. It’s a great time saver.

I’ve only looked superficially into the updates needed to make the character sheet compatible with the Compendium but I didn’t think it would alter the fields used with the JSON file. But, I definitely don’t want to break the importer.

Thanks for reaching out. I’ll reach out to you on discord so we can chat.

  17. Let’s start the week with an update last week’s progress. Besides a computer crash on Friday that slowed things down a bit (don’t worry everything is saved in the cloud), we were able to work through Chapter 1 of the Champions Begins GM Book through about half way into Chapter 2. As a side note, we can’t really separate the early parts of the GM book content from the adventure parts, so the adventure is really the entire GM book of Champions Begins. For this week, the plan is to continue working through Chapter 2, and possibly be into Chapter 3 by mid to late week.

Here is an early plan for the project with the target completion dates. The target completion date of the project is October 1st, but we’re trying to finish ahead.

    • VIPER Nest Adventure (Champions Begins GM Book): 5/6/22
    • Champions Complete Compendium: 6/30/22
    • Champions Begins Character Book: 7/15/22
    • Champions Begins Player Book: 8/5/22
    • Champions Begins GM Book (Compendium): 8/19/22
    • Maps & Tokens (Add-on): 9/9/22
    • HeroSystem6e Character Sheet (Roll20) Update: 9/23/22

We’ll post some pics at the end of the week. Feel free to post any questions or comments on the project.

  18. There’s a new Roll20 project in the works with a Q4 2022 targeted release. The Champions Complete Bundle will include a combined Compendium of Champions Complete and Champions Begins, plus the Champions Begins tutorial adventure and an additional set of maps and tokens.

If you’re unfamiliar with Roll20 Compendiums, they provide simple rules and content access with filtering and search capabilities. Additionally, Compendiums allow users to drag and drop character tokens directly into maps and access their character sheets. For example, a GM could drop a villain into a map and access the villain’s character sheet in seconds. The Compendium will use the currently available HeroSystem6e character sheet. Additionally, the GM can share the Compendiums with their players.

The Champions Begins adventure will have links to easily access content, character sheets for the pre-generated characters and villains as well as maps and tokens to run the adventure. The Game Master book will also be available in the Compendium allowing GMs and players to quickly reference information.

We will continue to use this topic in the coming months to post news of the progress and to get feedback from the community on the project.

We hope you’ll be as exited about this project as we are!

  19. I found a previous forum question on this which basically quoted 6E1 194.  What is throwing me off in the rule is the sentence "As soon as the Characteristic or power regains enough points so that its current Active Point total exceeds the Dispel’s effect, the Characteristic or power returns to the character (at its current, Adjusted but partly recovered level)."  Particularly, the "at its current, Adjusted but partly recovered level part.  Can you explain, by way of example, what happens if Hero x's STR 40 is drained down to 20 and my Dispel roll is 30?

  20. Ok, so I agree that this should be background stuff, but for the sake of argument, how about you build a base (the factory), that contains a machine (a compound power) that looks like this:

Replicant Maker:  (Total: 247 Active Cost, 95 Real Cost) Multiform (175 Character Points in the most expensive form) (Real Cost: 35) <b>plus</b> Duplication (creates 1000 175-point Duplicates), Uncontrolled (+1/2), Altered Duplicates (100%; +1) (212 Active Points); Extra Time (1 Month, Only to Activate, -2 1/2), Cannot Recombine (-0) (Real Cost: 60)
