  1. Re: Guns In The MHI RPG

I don't know that I agree a bullet is a bullet and a gun is a gun. Things like barrel length and machining tolerances make a significant difference to the projectile velocity and accuracy' date=' especially at greater distances. Even the bullet itself makes a difference.[/quote']

IRL, all true. But how much RL difference is necessary to see a significant difference at the statistical scale of a game?

  2. Re: Star Fleet Battles Starships

The only thing that I don't have knowledge of SFB to say if they have rules for under crewed vessels' date=' so if Klingons board the ship and start killing crew, you'd have to figure it out. I'm trying to remember how the rules work for multiple people assisting you with a skill roll, but my memory fails me.[/quote']

Yes, there are rules for undercrewed ships, because there are rules for A. boarding actions and B. crew losses due to ship damage.

SFB is the Advanced Squad Leader of space combat games.

  3. Re: Star Fleet Battles Starships

In SFB, the ships are, indeed, traveling at low (for Trek) FTL speeds in combat; the max combat speed is a tad over Warp 3 (31c, to be precise, although the fastest seeking weapons travel at 32c). Energy considerations typically force speeds to be a bit lower, as does turn radii for many of the ships.

I wouldn't necessarily try to simulate the mechanics of SFB in Hero, though, despite their similarities in using segmented actions. If you are trying to do Prime Directive Hero, use Hero for PC-level actions and SFB (or the simpler Federation Commander) for space combat.

  4. Re: Istvatha V'han - why can't she conquer Earth?

Except' date=' on a smaller scale, this is no different than Spider-Man or Daredevil versus Kingpin. Kingpin has mobs of thugs, yet he fights Daredevil or Spider-Man one-on-one from time to time. So on a larger scale, Istvatha V'han could appear because she believes that some things are best done personally, even if she has dimensions worth of armies to throw at the problem.[/quote']

This is an ongoing issue in RPGs: the dynamic tension of "genre tropes from the source media" vs. "setting simulationism". Each gaming group generally comes to its own balance, which may vary from game to game and setting to setting, depending on the tastes of the members*/ of the group.

*GM and players; a dictatorial GM often finds themselves sans players, as many gamers have come to the personal realization that no gaming is preferred to bad gaming.

  5. Re: Adult Entertainment

In all but the most comic code driven superhero universes "wardrobe malfunctions" have got to a fairly common event in the superhero/villain set. You might be able to bounce that 5d6 rka off your chest but your costume might be the worse for wear afterward. :D

Not really. Damage, sure. Exposure, not so much.

  6. Re: Turakian Age meets Terran Empire

I think I could easily fuse the Church of the Infinite Dark with DEMON rather easily. /QUOTE]

Very easily. The CotID is DEMON, or rather the descendants of the surviving remnants after Luther Black got consumed by the Kings of Edom after failing once too often....

  7. Re: THE BOOK OF THE EMPRESS -- What Do *You* Want To See?

Something just occurred to me: part of V'han's legions probably include several units made up entirely of alternate versions of the same person.

I've seen it done in comics: the collection of Captains Britain from the various universes of the Marvel Multiverse, and in DC (I forget the miniseries title -- heroes were fighting alternate versions of themselves in an arena) when various versions of Captain Atom showed up to attack Monarch.

So there might be a Defender Brigade, an Ironclad Brigade, a Silverback Brigade, a Justiciar Brigade, a Menton Brigade, a Foxbat Brigade, a Seeker Brigade, and so forth.

    A Destroyer Brigade....

  8. Re: "Neat" Pictures

If toilet paper keeps on getting more expensive' date=' people will start using catalogs like they used to.[/quote']

Or newspapers... which will sadly revise that archaic industry, saving it from overdue obsolescence...

  9. Re: How compatable is GURPS to Hero?

One key difference is that Hero is explicitly effects-driven by philosophy, with the rules being designed to provide building blocks (of varying granularity) to build the game mechanic to implement a given effect. GURPS, OTOH, is not as much of a "building blocks" rules set. However, GURPS has some things that Hero doesn't, such as metagame rules (see: Enhanced Time Sense) that are deucedly hard to convert over (I've tried. :) )
