  1. Re: Nazi Germany's Secret Plan to Bomb New York

except thats not an quite an aircraft. I dont speak russian, but the jet engines on stub wings at the nose are a dead givewaway to what that actually is, thats an Ekranoplan, what NATO called "The Caspian Sea Monster" a hybrid aircraft and hovercraft

yeah its probably sad I could ID the photo without the URL or captioning

one of the neatest ideas ever

Not that sad, I also knew it was an Ekranoplan at first sight -- the hull and the lower stub wings are also dead giveaways.

  2. Re: Save the American Space Program?!

Excising this part from my own link, because obviously, I'm so retarded as to have never read anything anywhere, or have done anything anywhere, or have worked anywhere, on anything, that the only possible reply to any speaking point brought up in a game forum, is some sort of directed assault. So therefore, once I manage the basics of oh, breathing, I'll try and explain myself better. This is after all, not a court of inquiry. I just want my space program back from the Haters that Wrecked it out of a sense of political and personal agenda.

Are Space Haters a subspecies of Damn Hippies?

Seriously, though, you're talking about a "treaty" that was never more than a proposal never signed by anyone who mattered, attacks on your person that aren't happening, and Space Haters and Damn Hippies that are largely imaginary. There are so many strawmen in your posts that it's a fire hazard.

  3. Re: Making nuclear weapons look like firecrackers

If your character can liberate occupied Hawaii, they can probably decapitate the Japanese government and military, quite likely making the superweapon unnecessary.

Also, can I ask why the atomic bomb hasn't been invented and used in this timeline, and why it couldn't be?

  4. Re: Neomen

The new Kazei 5 book has quite a lot on replicates (which humans think of as organic robots). I'd recommend it for a look on this subject.

    What he said.

  5. Re: Save the American Space Program?!

What do you mean by "more accountable to the tax-payers?" A case can be made that crops saved through improved weather forecasting alone has paid for the entire space program, manned and unmanned.

Personally I would like to see a dime a month from every cell phone and every TV hooked to a satellite or cable system go directly to the space program.

    I could go for that.

And I think you're right, the lifesaving and cropsaving benefits of better weather forecasting and mapping alone have more than paid for the entire space program. It's one of those no-brainer investments.

  6. Re: Announcing Kazei 5, Second Edition

I've been reading through K5 in my spare time, and in general I'm happy. I don't have a detailed review yet.

One specific thing I do like is the way that things like weapons have an "Effects" section at the beginning of each entry, then a description, and then the HERO build at the very end. For a non-supers game, in which the build is utterly and entirely a means to an end, that's exactly the way it should be

  7. Re: Announcing Kazei 5, Second Edition

Mine arrived today, with a big "address being checked" sticker on the package.

I'm at work and things have been nuts here the last three weeks because of year end, so I'm still playing catch-up, and won't get a chance to read through it much until this weekend, but flipping through it, so far, I'm impressed.

  8. Re: Announcing Kazei 5, Second Edition

We'll see if I get mine. I guess the warehouse mailed them instead of sending them UPS or FedEx, which was my original understanding. I have stuff sent to my office, but the business has a PO Box for postal mail, vs the physical address for shipping companies. Sometimes the post office here (big business, very small town, gotta love agribusiness) will return stuff addressed to street addresses instead of the PO Boxes.

  9. Re: Star Mapping software: You call THIS progress?

Thanks for the tip, Kristopher. I've still got a lot to learn about Windows 7! Unfortunately, that didn't resolve the issue. I followed up by right-clicking and choosing 'troubleshoot compatibility' but that didn't work either. If you'd like to take a look at the software and see if you can get it running on Windows 7, you can download it here:

    http://members.nova.org/~sol/chview/chvc.htm

I'm not sure if it's possible; will a 16-bit program run in Windows 7, under any circumstances?

Did you try the Win98 compatibility mode?

  10. Re: "Ya better talk Oculon, or you'll get the spike!" (A Super law question)

Sorry, liked the quote from an episode of Law & Order...

Anyway, what happens if a villain is incarcerated and gets the death penalty, but due to his physiology, he survives the lethal injection. What happens next? If you live through the death penalty, do they keep trying till they get it right?

For the legal eagles here, feel free to explain to layperson me what would happen using small words. :)

Based on what has happened in real life, the state will continue trying to carry out the sentence, as many times as necessary.

  11. Re: Impact of Figured Characteristics

Gymnast girl that's never thrown a punch!

    Extra near-sighted kung fu master!

A pirate! (high dex for running around a heaving ship and no depth perception because of the EYE PATCH! HA!)

A pacifist! (i could hit you, but I just can't bring myself to land a punch...i mean, i KEEP MISSING!)

HA! I like this game! :)

At least some of those might be skills with extra points invested, instead of overall higher DEX.

  12. Re: Collaborative World Ending…

It would also be possible to go in the other direction. Start off with a low- or no-magic world, and bring in a sudden massive influx of magic. Magic spells become dramatically more powerful; animals, plants, and sapients start to mutate; gods and demons begin to manifest in the world. The problem is, no one is prepared or trained to handle this new level of power. Spells spin out of control, with devastating effects to the populace and the environment. The new or more powerful "monsters" overthrow the ecological balance. The mightiest of empowered beings are driven mad by the experience, warring with each other or just rampaging across the world.

Besides the struggle to survive, your PCs will also gradually learn to master the potential abilities available in this new world; which would provide a direct justification for them gaining "Experience" and becoming stronger.

    I like this suggestion.

  13. Re: Impact of Figured Characteristics

How so? Just take the formulas from 5th Edition to set MINIMUM values you have to buy.

For example, someone buys CON 15, then ED has to be at least 3, REC has to be at least 3 (+STR/5), END has to be at least 30 and STUN has to be at least 8 (+BODY +STR/2).

Only difference is, that you actually pay for the "figured characteristics" instead of getting them for free.

You always did pay for them.

  14. Re: Are single climate/habitat worlds really possible?

I thought we were talking about 40 billion earlier.

I'm sure Lucas didn't put a lot of thought into it because that's not how Star Wars works (and criticizing it by slinging numbers makes about as much sense as criticizing a Bugs Bunny cartoon with physics). But yeah, a planetwide city doesn't mean a planetwide city center. Cities generally have more way low-density than high-density areas and no shortage of zero-density areas.

40 billion was used, I don't recall where it came from, it might be the canonical population of Trantor. But if it is, Trantor isn't really "one vast city" -- just not enough people.

Keep in mind that the density figures I was trying out to get numbers in the few trillions rage are from real cities, which include things like airports and warehouses and parks and various non-residental buildings.
