  1. -Yeah you should definitely avoid any demon-type stuff. No need for any religious parents finding and burning you at the stake or something. -You might have to spell out what the attributes and stuff actually mean and do. Things like STR and DEX are fairly obvious. But a newcomer looking at DCV is gonna go "What?". I remember the good ol days when everybody thought D&D was evil. The propaganda at youth activities against it was crazy. I think one mentioned it was evil because to generate your characters you used 3 6-sided dice. (This is sarcasm, in case anybody is thinking especially slowly today:rolleyes: )
  2. Yeah, I was kinda planning on doing something like that. Yeah I remember in science class the mentioning of the size of the galaxy. Little too big to think about for my puny mind. . Yeah I was thinking of just a region, though you cant necessarily assume that every system has a planet with sentient life. The Sol system is still up for debate on the whole sentient thing:p
  3. Sorry I just finished reading all the post and Agent X covered most what I said, sorry about that.
  4. May have been already mentioned (havent read this thread all the way through. Eastern Empire fell with Constantinople (capital) in 1453. Though it had been getting progressively smaller I think by the Turks. I think the Western part officially fell 476. I know it didnt last much longer after Atilla the Hun was around (he died in 453 if I remember). Augustus Caesar was the 1st Emperor from I believe (27BC-14AD) I'd say Roman Republic/Empire was at their peak power from about 100BC-200AD or thereabouts.
  5. I was going to create a thread about this type of thing, thanks for saving me time;) . I have been thinking about starting up a kind of combination of star/super game and I wanted kind of a visual to "estimate" how far they have to travel, etc. I guess theoetically you could "piece" some of the sectors you create together to have a region of a galaxy. And I agree why cant astronomers use their imaginations. They might get a date now and again:cool:
  6. I was just wondering if anybody had done any character creation with the video game Freedom Force. I am considering using some characters (especially villains).
  7. I created a superhero, who was a more of an ends justify the means type of guy. Always at odds with the cliche boy scout superhero of the group as you might imagine. Course as a joke I gave my guy hatred of clowns. Never came up though, they didnt exactly take me to the circus. Course i wish the Joker (or like villain) would have showed up might have been interesting. Course I imagine the Joker wouldnt be breaking out of Arkham every other Tuesday for a while:D
  8. What do you have against me and badger3k, Toadmaster?
  9. Never thought about that way but you have apoint about D&D they did seem to believe in their own system's perfection. And wanted you to know it. Probably why I always felt it was too limiting.
  10. Cthulhu at McDonald's! I'm glad I eat at Subway. Sorry I couldnt resist. I was weak.
  11. I have to agree pretty much with Lord Mhoram. The thing that got me so interested in HERO was the possibility of cross-genre action. I do have to say my pet peeve is when systems have the random character generation. No fun. I'm a guy who has a certain idea of what character should be. I usually like playing characters with high DEX and SPD (cant hit what you cant catch). With the randoms I would always seem to get the high STR who moved about as fast as a tree. Very hard for a guy like me to play a character like that. Actually I usually got unlucky and would have low stats across the board. And my only use would be as a shield if I got killed. But I saw an idea a couple years ago somewhere on the internet that really caught my eye. Basically the idea was a dimension where people from all other dimensions and time periods could get sent into to interact with each other. The ultimate in cross-genre if you will. Kind of an endless possibilities. You could have wizards living side by side with someone from an advanced civilization. And what would happen if said wizard say got assimilated by the Borg? Just some thoughts.
  12. So it could work like maybe post tramatic stress or something? That would seem right anyway.
  13. Hypothetically how would an already insane character work? Though for the most part they would likely be NPC but just curious how they would work in?
  14. Dont know if anybody remembers the old Thundarr the Barbarian cartoons. But by the sound of it you could run something like that. The plot was something like a comet tore apart the moon which did some "wacky" things with the ocean's tide, etc. And pretty much destroyed civilization. 2000 years later..... Basically you got things from fantasy magic, wizards, etc. With some left over technology being implemented in with the story. Wizards having armies equippedwith old army vehicles, etc.
  15. Well I saw "the stand" miniseries but didnt read the book. Flagg I gathered to be the Devil. WHo was taking the opportunity of an cataclysmic edipdemic to take over what was left. To be a little orignal I would suggest one of these 3 mythological gods: Hades/Pluto: Greek/Roman Anubis- Egypt Loki- Viking These I think were pretty much the "troublemakers" I think in their respective myths (not for sure on Anubis, exactly, though). This might help if you go with an evil being taking advantage and taking over scenario. Or you can just make Jeff Probst the Anti-Christ.
  16. In any case though the thing to do maybe make things easier until they get used to it. I would have to know what is confusing to them to think of examples. Depends on the group. As far as getting them to try it. I would basically try to persuade them with the "Just try it one time, if you dont like it then we can go with something else" approach. Course most of the guys I hang out with are math-freaks like me, who actually want rules with most things. But, I guess the thing to remember is you cant expect a man to be able to do Calculus if hasnt taking a math class more complicated than your general arithmetic. If all that makes sense.
  17. D&D should be considered a complicated game too. I rmember one of my friends explaining a rule to me one time, cant remember the rule but here is how the conversation basically went: (friends gives detailed explanation, badger's eyes glaze over) Badger: Wouldnt it be easier to just do it this way (badger explains simpler way) Friend: But they dont do it that way Badger: But it would be easier.... Friend: But they dont Badger: But... Friend: No!
  18. Having trouble remembering but wasnt Where Eagles Dare also with Clint Eastwood in it? If so that has to rate up there with favorites.
  19. Sounds like of these guys take it too seriously. Some therapy needed? But I've (and my friends) have created characters that have basically had our basic personality you might say but we dont go crying for weeks because our character died. I myself got a little "out of kilter" when I lost a character, though it was more because I "lost" than actually lost my character. I've always been a bit comptetitive no matter what I am doing. Just my nature (you should see the chess games my dad and uncle used to have, LOL). After a couple of minutes I was actually laughing over the irony. Now though I just create characters that "any similarity in personality with me is purely coincidence". In fact most of the time almost nothing like me. I play to have fun. Once I started to learn the "how" of role-playing, it just became more fun to have characters different from me.
  20. Thanks, it was driving me crazy that I couldnt think of the name:o
  21. I cant remember the author of the play (it was around Shakespeare's time though) but it was the one about Dr. Faust the one who sold his soul, etc. You can could have him returning to this plane on a mission for "the Evil One". I havent read the play since high school so I cant give many details about him. Maybe you could have him at the head of a secret criminal empire. And have them learn more about this mysterious leader of the criminal empire and his "true" intentions as things go. A mission like launching the start of the end times (hey he is working for the EVIL one after all) of Revelation.
  22. Me personally, I've always been good at math so adding up stuff doesnt bother me as much (in fact it can be fun, gasp:D ) But, people's taste change. Six or seven years ago I thought you couldnt no better than the Star Wars series. Then I started watching some anime and liked it (plus there was that Phantom Menace incident) so I got turned off of Star Wars. So you can change taste in just about anything. I used to play Star Wars RPG but I (and most of my friends) got bored with it because you couldnt create a wide diversity of characters. We got onto HERO because of a wider variety basically. And like it was earlier stated HERO isnt gonna "divorce" you if you leave for awhile and come back. LOL.
  23. I've never been real comfortable with the whole mind reading stuff. Usually in other RPGs in the past we have put limits on it. Also other characters we allow to have the ability to "fight off" the attempting mind reader. Based on something like their willpower or maybe their pychic training and other such stuff. ANd maybe have something to modify what you can get out of it. A favorite color wouldnt be so hard to obtain necessarily in a mind read. But the deepest darkest secret in the mind of a person with strong willpower and a lot of training in psychic abilities is gonna be pretty blasted hard to unlock.
  24. I have to agree Surbrook's stuff is good. Finding his website is what got me interested in HERO in the first place. Dont think he has any Matrix stuff up though. But depending on what your "other" characters you want. You could probably find a few on there.
  25. still in the process of ordering but maybe some limit would be good for timestop. Example: Guldo the 4-eyed Ginyu force member could stop time. But the catch was he could hold time for only as long as he could hold breath and it required and bucketload of energy. After 2 or 3 times using it in battle he couldnt even use energy blasts on Gohan and Krillin. Not sure how to work these limitations in game terms (as I still obviously havent got the book yet) but these are possible ways to keep it from being a super cheesy cheap shot in a campaign.
