  1. Porting some AD&D to Hero for GenCon. Converting some spells and I'm running into this problem. I've got a Damage Negation (for instance) in a compound power for "Protection from Evil" that normally doesn't cost Endurance. So I add Cost Endurance to Activate, which allows me to take Time Limit (for Duration effects). I'm trying to keep the spells at a reasonable mana pool cost (out of an END Reserve), I like the 2 - 3 price point. But the power is now up at 7 END or so. So I try to change the "Costs Endurance to Activate" to "Costs Half Endurance" but now it's a constant power and Time Limit requires 0 END or Only to Activate. Damage Negation (-4 DCs Physical, -4 DCs Energy), Usable By Other (+1/4) (50 Active Points); Extra Time (Full Phase, -1/2), Gestures (-1/4), Incantations (-1/4), IIF (Holy Water or Incense; -1/4), Limited Power Only vs Evil (-1/4), Requires A Roll (Magic Skill, -2; -1/4), Costs Half Endurance (-1/4): 17 Real Points Time Limit is EXACTLY the Advantage I want. I guess what I really need is a "Costs Half End to Activate" option or at least some way to work around to it. Am I missing something? I'd like to avoid wimping the power down to uselessness just to get the END costs down to a reasonable level. Thanks! --r
  2. Hot damn (pardon my French). I was hoping (and I had a sneaking suspicion this would be the case) that someone had already done the lion's share of the work. Thanks for the links!! This is going to make things much simpler.
  3. That is actually quite a bit of help. The file for the book as a whole seems to be corrupted. I can't get it to open in anything. The chapters will work, but it makes it a bit harder to work with. I'll def take a look at that when I get to that point. TY.
  4. So I'm running a few games at GenCon in 2019. I'm basing all my games off a sense of nostalgia. I'm converting a bunch of different games into Hero. My first game is going to be a Gary Gygax AD&D module. I'm not sure yet, but one/two of the GDQ series (Against the Giants, the Drow, and Queen of the Demonweb Pits). My second game is going to be a ShadowRun adventure. My third game is going to be a DragonLance module (maybe DL1 or DL2). My fourth game is going to be a City of Heroes Task Force (not sure which one yet, but I'm looking). My fifth game is going to be on of the classic Hero System adventures, maybe even with the Champions (cuz who doesn't love Seeker?). My sixth game is going to be a replay of an adventure from my home campaign. I've got a lot of conversions to get done in the next few months. A lot of it is pretty straight forward. I don't need to convert an AD&D hill giant into Hero, I can just grab a Hill Giant out of the Bestiary and move on. I'm busy creating prefabs (and using the prefabs in the Library) for AD&D 1st Edition spells, and equipment. So the point of all this is I'm looking for any prefabs/characters/lists you might have that has already done some of the legwork for me. Even if they aren't perfect ports, having something I can edit into what I need is a bit easier than creating everything from scratch. I appreciate all your assistance. FYI, this is a cross-post to the FH board. Not exactly polite of me, but I'm not exactly polite. Right now I'm concentrating on the AD&D games (since there are 2 of them and are going to require the largest amount of work with spells etc). I'll then work on either ShadowRun or the CoH TF. The Hero stuff isn't going to need much of any work. I have all the characters and materials and what I don't already have is going to be pretty straight forward and quick. -Rapier.

EDIT: Oh, and it's nice to be back. Things been kind of busy and hectic and everything but things are good.
  6. I hadn't actually considered the sfx argument. Nicely done.
  7. I want to store a charge inside of a stable electric field, so...yes.
  8. Background: I've got an electricity blaster. He's got a fairly normal build, as blasters go. All his attacks are dumped into a fairly large MP. One of the things I've been considering is an electric grenade. He loads up a blast of electricity into the grenade and wraps it in an electric field to keep it stable, but the field will degenerate over a couple of phases and then it will explode. The plan is to form a grenade, hand it to the brick and let her get in close and deliver it along with a big smack to the head. Or, of course, just use them as regular grenades or use them to mine a hallway or whatever. Whether this ends up being a little globe of energy or more of a damage shield UOO, I haven't decided yet. I was thinking Trigger was the easiest way to go. I was considering a range of detonation times from 1 to 3 phases, which would be Variable Trigger (I think). But the reset is kind of strange. There isn't, technically, a reset of the trigger. It's one and done. So maybe Trigger isn't the way to go. Delayed Effect? Delayed Effect seems to be more straight forward, but there is that whole deal about how the caster decides when to cast it. Which might be ok, both thematically and operationally. Instead of having a countdown he just decides when to let it blow. Delayed Effect has that caveat about how it can only be used in campaigns where there is a limit to the number of active powers, but we can probably ignore that bit. But I do already have a damage shield. Maybe just add UOO to it? But then we are going down the Uncontrolled path and that is going to get pretty darned expensive real fast. Any thoughts? Oh, and obviously I'm talking about an xd6 Blast with Explosive AOE.
  9. Re: "Neat" Pictures That's Ouroborus!
  10. Re: The 10 Most Disgusting Alien Civilizations I didn't really think much of the list. I think there have been much more disgusting and creepy aliens than many on the list. While the Xenomorphs are scary as all get out, I'm not sure I would call them disgusting. When I think disgusting I think more "EW ICK TAKE IT AWAY!" Slugs and worms and slimey aliens are more disgusting.

    Traps?

Re: Traps? Wow. There's a blast from the past. I have two fairly skinny volumes in white by that name that I've had for about 20 years now. I'm not sure if those are the same volumes, but iirc they were a bit more tongue-in-cheek brutal than actually useful. While I can't necessarily recall anything specific, a number of them were almost guaranteed to kill the character (eg the Acid Bath of Flesh Eating).
  14. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... James (to the shape-shifting hotty): "Damn, Girl. You must be my lucky charm, cuz you magically delicious." [Followed by a Seduction roll made by 5!]
  15. Re: Requires A Skill Roll: Skill Vs. Skill Contests?
  16. Re: Requires A Skill Roll: Skill Vs. Skill Contests? It depends a great deal on what the power is. In many cases it's almost assumed that their will be contested skill rolls (eg Super-Decryption). It's difficult to say without knowing what kind of power you are building and how you are building it. In many cases I would simply consider it SFX and not worth a modifier at all. Ad hoc modifiers are part and parcel of Hero and it would be very easy to consider a contested skill roll as little more than a 'modifier to your success.'

  18. Re: "Neat" Pictures I got a Dr Who vibe off it as well!
  19. Re: Who is sticking to 4th or 5th Ed HERO YOU ARE ALL WRONG, WRONG, WRONG AND I AM RIGHT, RIGHT RIGHT! SO THERE! And now that my eminently logical and well-reasoned argument has you on the ropes, I shall accept your apology for doubting me.
  20. Re: HERO System Bestiary On of the things I thought was beneficial for me is that there seemed to be a wider breadth of monsters. In previous editions I sometimes felt that there was a LOT of space given to different versions of a base monster (eg dragons) so that if you happened to not be using that type of monster in your game you didn't get as much use out of the book. I'm not sure if it's just because the new version has more pages or if it's organised differently, but I FEEL like the 6E version was a better buy than 5E. That could just be me. I haven't actually compared page counts or number of monsters or monster types, so I could be wrong. But it certainly feels like a larger cross-section of creatures to SMASH!
  21. Re: Who is sticking to 4th or 5th Ed HERO The Ultimate Skill was one of those revelationy books. I kept reading through it going "OH MY GOD!" There was a lot of very good stuff in there. HSMA is my next purchase. I've decided that, at least for now, I'm going all digital. I just don't use the hard covers as much as I used to and the PDFs are so much more portable.
  22. Re: More Papercraft! This time for Star Hero I love these. Lately we've been using Hero Clix which are very nice and fun but their bases are too large for our hexes. I would love to switch over to the paper minis like we used to use (with the obligatory penny taped to the bottom). Maybe I will suggest that. It is frequently easier to find an image that resembles your character rather than a clix. Oh, and Tasha, I think I prefer my Klingons with bumps too. I understand why the TOS didn't do much makeup but I think it was a nice addition to TNG. IIRC there was even some retconning where the TOS Klingons were surgically altered to appeal to human sensibilities or something.
