Sure, but I'd just as soon not have to live through one of the numerous painful setbacks that occurs before the "inevitable" win.  DeSantis frightens me more than Trump.

Whenever gun control, especially 'assault weapon' bans, become a prominent topic in the  media there is a spike in sales of that category of firearms.  This is likely a factor in the continuing surge in sales past the election itself.

However, as someone who works in the shooting industry, in addition to the increased demand for AR-type rifles/pistols, I've been seeing a lot more interest in personal carry handguns and people worrying about their their ability to defend themselves.

US political violence is surging, but talk of a civil war is exaggerated – isn’t it?

Weeelll... while that's definitely possible, there are other explanations. One likely explanation is that Trump is lying, trying to drum up more outrage from his base to fuel their willingness to donate to his "defense." Another is that those passports were diplomatic documents from Trump's time as President, and therefore legally belong in the government's presidential archives.

But Old Man's assumption is very plausible, and shared by many in all media. If the FBI deliberately confiscated Trump's passports to keep him from fleeing, that would suggest the federal investigation into his activities is close to laying serious charges.

That bridge is burned. It’s long past time to put up or shut up.

The true believers on either side won’t believe any verdict that doesn’t vindicate their position, but there are still people who believe that laws and government are supposed to work  and haven’t finalized the verdict in their own minds (hard as that may be to believe) that want to see less innuendo and more action.

If Trump is guilty, then prove it and convict him.

I'm afraid I have to disagree.  I would describe this position as appeasement if not outright surrender.  If there are no consequences for breaking the law then conservatives will continue to break the law, and if they don't have a convenient excuse they'll invent one.

IIRC, SCI isn't over and above TS.  MOST TS is actually SCI...the C means compartmented, and anything that's TS is almost certain to need that as well.  You might have a TS for, say, nuclear information, but no need to know the control codes used by targeting radars in missile systems.  They're totally unrelated.

Secret clearances are...somewhat common.  Not too hard to get.  Had one for quite some time.  OTOH, TS is RARE.  The investigation for a TS is very intrusive.  Handling even Secret documents was a serious matter.  Leaving out TS in improper circumstances...yeah, that's really, really bad.

Beau is so irritating I hope never to see or hear him again. He’s better than Fox and Facebook, though admittedly that’s a low bar to clear.

On an unrelated note, nuclear information is classified under the Atomic Energy Act and can only be declassified by the Atomic Energy Commission. Just to take away one possible excuse that might be used.

Came here to mention this.  TS/SCI is a really really big deal.  This is not good news for anyone.  It's likely to prompt quite a lot of government action in general.  BTW if any of you want a good news source, Beau of the Fifth Column on YouTube is pretty fantastic.  He's the one who mentioned this for me to see it.

So, the National Archives picked up 15 boxes of documents taken from the White House from Mar-A-Lago in January. If this is really about those documents, does that mean that the National Archives didn't get all of them in January?  https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/02/07/trump-records-mar-a-lago/

I'm not surprised at all. If they get to define whats UnAmerican, that can give a carte blanche to go after anyone who isn't themselves or their voting base.

Only thing I have to add is something that was kind of terrifying: a Georgia candidate who lost his Primary wanted to bring back the House Unamerican Activities Committee.  I was stunned that anyone would want to resurrect that.  I can't even come close to overstating my objection to something like this.

Not really.  Far too often, it's all about the cost.  Especially if the common culprit is that big square-box brown van we all recognize?  That's sheet metal walls...painted a nice, heat-absorbing dark color?  With NO windows?  How many of those are on the road, and what would be the cost to retrofit each one?

It is somewhat surprising this has gone on as long as it has;  it's not new:

But the managers' reactions are pretty typical.  I remember issues with back injuries with, IIRC, the package companies and Wal-Mart, at different times.  Quite similar.  Managers are going to do everything possible to minimize the issue;  workmen's comp claims look bad on their record, and probably tend to draw unwonted attention from OSHA.  Not just one claim, but multiples.

One also has to wonder...if it does come to OSHA's attention, how diligent are their people with their investigation?  Especially in a situation like this.  It's quite plausible to me that the legal demand for every i to be properly dotted, every t to be properly crossed, every one of the 217 blanks filled in properly, makes it exceptionally burdensome for the inspectors to actually DO anything...and that the companies KNOW this.

Of course I'm serious. I would not post it if I were not serious. However, I brought up the Bolsheviks only as an example of how a committed, disciplined group of radicals can achieve power without truly representing the popular will. I agree that compared to the likes of Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky, American conservatives are a bad joke. But then, many modern Americans are a lot softer and sillier than were the Russians of the time. American conservatives have also been working at this for a lot longer than the Bolsheviks did.

And I am also entirely serious in expecting that post-Trumpian conservatives, should they achieve the House-Senate-White House trifecta again, would become democidally dangerous. I'm sure at first they would follow Viktor Orban's model of "illiberal democracy," in which elections still happen but are so rigged that the opposition can't win. But much of what the base wants isn't politically possible. LGBT+ people are not going back in the closet. Black people will not touch their foreheads and say, "Yassuh," nor accept being addressed as "Boy." The mills will not re-open with plentiful jobs for semi-skilled labor. And many in the base will still feel the scalding sense that the educated, credentialed elites sneer at them. The Republicans will have to turn to repression, then violence, then terror.

I would rather avoid this. Since I don't think the country can be put back together again, I think there's value in exploring methods for an amicable separation.

His lawyers were informed of the mistake about the documents, and neglected to make any of it privileged, meaning that all of it is admissible. My favorite quote from this story was the comment picked up on a hot mike made by the opposing attorney during a recess:
