  1. Re: Attractiveness - Comeliness Vs. Striking Appearance

    Hmm.

If I'd paid for Striking Appearance, I'd probably be a bit hacked off another character or an NPC could just ignore my spend because they decided it does not apply to them. It is a bit like someone deciding that they are immune to fire and not having to pay any points to make that a reality.

When I buy SA I expect it to work on (signfigantly) less than 50% of the game world population...

  2. Re: Jokes

Well, apparently I'm old, but I'm not sure how old. I know about all 15 and have had actual expereince with many of them...

1.Candy cigarettes - they had these when I was a kid. The fake smoek was only ever good for one or two puffs.

2.Coffee shops with tableside juke boxes - we still have these things at some local retro diners. Not sure I eever saw one at a cofee shop though...

3.Home milk delivery in glass bottles - my mother talks about this fondly all the time, but we never had it when I was growing up. However, Oberwise does home delivery in glass bottles these days.

    4. Party lines on the telephone - never used one, but know about it from freinds.

5.Newsreels before the movie - never actually saw one, though I saw movies where it was featured so I knew of it;s existance.

6.TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning. (there were only 3 channels [if you were fortunate]) - We had more than 3 channels, but I do remember the test pattern. It would come on after the bad horror movies I would stay up later to watch ;)

7.Peashooters - never actually shot peas with one. We used spit balls.

    8. Howdy Doody - Not old enough to have seen it live, but I have seen some episodes here and there. Not sure if that counts for anything though...

    9. 45 RPM records - my uncle had a huge collection

10.Hi-fi's - my first stero was inherited from my mother and was clearly labeled hi-fi.

    11. Metal ice trays with lever - still have two of them. I can no longer remember what color they were, as it's faded to plain metal. I rememebr our aluminium ice cream scoop used to be pink...

    12. Blue flashbulb - My mom had these for our polaroid.

13.Cork popguns - I had one as a kid, but it was shaped like a little wooden cane and not a real rifle. I can still remember the odd smell of the cork.

    14. Studebakers - seen them at car shows, nevre owned or rode in one.

    15. Wash tub wringers - had one for years in my grandmothers basement. She actually used it on certian things that she wanted to hang dry in the summer (curtains and linnens mostly if I recall)

Pretty sure that squeeks me into older than dirt, but I might just qualifty for don't tell...

  3. Re: NBC Revolution

Makes some sense. Except' date=' if civilization is falling apart the way they implied in trailers, not sure you have time to go keep up with civilians.[/quote']

The show takes place 15 years after the lights go out, so we don't have the details on what happend in the intirim yet.

They do mention multiple Republics that have sprung up across the country. So it might just be a hanging offence in Monroe Republic, the area around Chicago that is run by General Monroe and that is the background of the show thus far.

Some of Monroe's men had firearms, but several of them were black powder muskets.

  4. Re: Stop Hits

Odd thought: if two people with triggered attacks are fighting each other' date=' do they keep triggering until one misses or falls over?[/quote']

Make it interesitng and add a "counter strike" damage shield or two into the mix ;)

  5. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities

Sadly' date=' the one example I've been exposed to is working hard to make it All About the Men in the fandom -- even though the target audience is young girls (My Little Pony: FiM). And there's been some horrifying incidents of creepy harassment at these so-called "BronyCons".

I'm can be pretty crass sometimes IRL. And I've been known to hang out in the underbelly of the internet, so I'm well aware of some of the alternate entertainment that elements of this particular fanbase are drawn to...

But at the point where you drop rape jokes and N bombs in the presence of children, you need a serious wake up call. Quite possibly a five fingered one...

This is internet trolling, 4chan browsing, youtube coment wars brought into real life.

Sounds like an Epic Fail by secirty and con staffers too.

And I probably would have gelded the Brony in the second link...

  6. Re: Stop Hits

I have done some JKD and fencing, so I'm familiar with the concept.

However, what really matters here is what you want to accomplish with it in game.

For example, if you just want to interupt a guys attack and hit the guy before he hits you, there's a few ways to do that.

However, if you want to interupt his attack and hit him in such a way that it is impossible for him to continue his initial attack well, that's a signifigantly more powerful ability and would probably need to be built differently.

  7. Re: NBC Revolution

There was nothing about it that really impressed me, but I'll give it a chance because the Wife seems interested in it.

Still not sure if the mystery will really work as a hook for me. Right now I'm mildly curious to find out the explaination, but so far it's just pixie dust.

  8. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities

With the single exception of womyns' studies :)' date=' I think most women are perfectly accepting if a man is interested in something that they are also interested in.[/quote']

Pretty much my experience as well, however...

I have had some issues with women in fitness activites like Yoga or Pilates that have reservations about letting a man into an all female group. Understandable though, given the "meat market" attitude many people have about working out.

  9. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities

Not from the LARP' date=' but from the Vampire: The Masquerade rpg itself. Thats when i noticed a huge influx of females into the hobby was after this game hit in popularity. It happened to hit during the height of the Anne Rice era of urban fantasy and took its cues from said fiction. The end result is that it was the first pen and paper rpg that had a major appeal to potential female gamers.[/quote']

Yep, though the Vampire LARP was always vary popular with the ladies as well.

I was in school during this time and worked at a game store.

I had never seen any other game attract quite so many female gamers in such large number, many of them completly new to the hobby.

At one point in time, we had just about every actress in the theatre program at two seperate high schools playing Vampire.

  10. Re: Clothes only TK

Okay this is just a general consensus question. If some one has bought TK limited only to clothes would you allow them to lift someone by lifting their clothes? Also if you do allow that' date=' would you allow the person being lifted a STR/Escape roll to escape the lift?[/quote']

Probably not, but depends on how the limitation is written.

Only works against Clothes and Must Involve Clothes are two very different limitations.

  11. Re: Planetary Value?

A question, then, for you, the person reading this now. You learn that the Earth will be destroyed in a few years, with absolute certainty... unless you, along with everyone else on the planet, works very hard over those years to avert its doom, making considerable sacrifices and facing no small amount of hardship. However, you're presented with an alternative: you, your loved ones, and every other human being on the planet can be transported to another world, as habitable and resource-rich as this one, where you can start your life again. Facilities are already in place on that planet to make life much easier than it would be while you were trying to save the Earth. However, you can bring only small items of personal property. Every building and monument, every animal and plant species on Earth (barring your pets which you can bring along), will be lost forever.

It's given to you to make that choice for the whole world. What do you choose?

That depends... Do I have the power to enforce my choice?

I don't trust humanity to do what must be done without a a ruthless captain at the helm.

L:acking that, the only chance of survival is to abandon ship.

  12. Re: Cannot be resurrected

In D&D you cannot resurrect Elves' date=' how would you build that in FH? It seems too infrequent for a physical limitation, but how about a power limitation of some sort ?[/quote']

Pretty sure that only lasted into 2E... You can Resurect elves though. You can't use Raise Dead.

So I'd say it's a limitation on the Riase Dead spell, the value of which will depend on how many other races it doesn;t work on...

  13. Re: Would you allow this?

Often, the problem with caps is that the maximum quickly also becomes the minimum. A combination approach providing ranges (so we don't end up with CV's of 6 - 18), and the requirement that being above the midpoint on one range requires being below the midpoint somewhere else is a happy medium, at least IMO. So maybe we tell the players CV should range from 8 - 12, damage from 10 - 14 DC's, SPD from 5 - 7, and defenses from 20 - 30 (with about half to 2/3 resistant). You want a 12 OCV? Then you balance that out with a 5 SPD, or 10 DC's. Maybe you have a 12 OCV, 14 DC's and 6 SPD, but DCV 8 and 20 defenses (ie you are a glass cannon).

I find it better to review the character overall (maybe a bit more power is OK if the character has less versatility, high normal defenses can be mitigated by a lack of exotic defenses, or movement deficiencies can offset other advantages, or what have you), but I'm still looking for a balance of strengths and weaknesses. If you don't want any weak/below average areas, then you don't get any strong/above average areas.

Pretty much how we run it. No one hit's all the caps, a couple will hit two caps and the true speciailssts can generally excede the cap in a single area.

[arr] The caps is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules! [/arr]

  14. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities

So, does all of this Con ass-grabbery also go on at comic and SciFi general conventions? Or is it more for writer and programmer type conventions?

Because my wife wants to go to a couple of the comic cons up here some time, and I don't want to have to mangle anyone up if they get frisky. I'm asking this in all seriousness.

In the last 20 years, I've brought women to cons/expos for sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, comics, anime, books, toys, tv shows, cars, guns, computers/electronics, martial arts, fitness and sex/exotica.

In that time, it has never happend to anyone I was with. This is not to say it doesn't happen, but I've not experienced it or even witnessed it happening to somone else.

Honestly, the only times I've personally witnessed litteral ass-grabbery have been times where alchohol was involved (bars, night clubs, conerts, parties...)... or at strip clubs, where some guys seem to think they can get away with it with the dancers

  15. Re: Would you allow this?

This is kind of the issue with allowing the unbalanced one-really-BIG-trick-pony ... they get experience points' date=' which you then have to monitor closely. If Mr. Indestructible starts buying offense with his points ... Martial Arts, gadgetry, maybe his powers evolve and he's getting the Strength that usually goes with that level of invulnerability ... how much do you allow? How much is too much?[/quote']

Points is points. Even if something starts off totally balanced, it can grow into a broken mess with time and XP.

Characters evolve in all kinds of crazy ways. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Like right now, Cyclops has the Phoenix Force and all the rediculous cosmic Psi powers that go with it ;)

GM supervision is always required. Shtick pretection should be enforced by group effort. And concept is king...
