  1. Re: A Thread for Random Musings So my wife's contractions are 10 - 12 minutes apart. Wish us luck.
  2. Hypothetical: Psychic Whitehat has a TK based force-wall , 1" X 3", up between Team Whitehat and the Opfor. Martial Artist Whitehat Martial Grabs a member of the Opfor using a suitable implement (a chain, kawanaga, long silk scarf, etc.), attacking indirectly over the TK based force wall. Then what? In pulling the Kawanaga tight, does it remain over the force wall? Does it sink down until it is going through the middle of the force wall? If the Martial Artist tries to reel in his catch, does the Opfor come over the force wall, or through it? If through it, at what cost to himself?
  3. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Did you know that a guy once worked at the Moulin Rouge with a world famous farting act? No, really. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Pujol
  4. Re: How long does tech last after The End? A really damned huge solar flare, the kind necessary to wipe out not only transistors but also to fuse alternators into decorative copper donuts: what other side effects? Would it leave every blessed ferrous metal on the planet magnetized? A world without alternators gets pretty damned complicated, in terms of scrounging. A world where every ferrous metal is magnetized is likewise a pain in the ass to build things in, especially things with moving parts. You could wind up with magnets all over the place, and people trying desperately to make generators out pvc, wood, and scrap aluminum.
  5. Re: Musings on Random Musings And then you slapped her silly? It worked for Scarlet. It's actually a running gag (a private one, and one in very poor taste) with my wife and I. I say "I don't nothin' 'bout (topic X)!" She says "Whack!" and makes a slapping gesture. a fine time is had by all.
  6. Re: Steampunk Campaign Ideas Webcomic? Gimme linkee!
  7. Re: Is this Munchkinism? I guess the Spanish Inquisition had invisibility to Danger Sense...
  8. Re: Your Character/Game Equation Punchline = Joker + Darkman Gremlin = Captain America + Falling Hare Black Cat = (Batman + Daredevil + Moon Knight)/3 + Tony Danza^2
  9. Re: Is Leaping too Cheap? In the calculations I used for my earlier posts, I calculated the height of the jump by first calculating the duration of the jump, and dividing it by two, and then applying GT^2/2, where G = the force of gravity, 32'/sec, t is the amount of time in seconds, and 2 is 2. How long is the jump, in seconds? A combat leap (a half move) is half a second, by my reasoning. A 32 second noncombat leap would take you about 3/4 of a mile in the air. "I think I can see my house from here!" The fun part (?) is that leap might take someone with 2" of leaping and X32 ncm just down the block, and over half a mile up.
  10. Re: How long does tech last after The End? There are plenty of cars in Cuba that suggest that regular mintenance and scavenged parts can keep a vehicle running for quite some time. As for wind turbines, this has been done before, believe it or not. The wind power generation section of Distributed Energy Systems used to be called Northern Power, and they got their start in the 1970s by rehabbing windmills from the midwest farms from the 1930s. Windpower is old school, particularly for power generation. Additionally, the mechanics of a wind turbine are easy - a fan, a transmission, a coil of conductive wire, some magnets, and you're in business. A propellor and alternator salvaged from a cessna, combined with the gearing (and hell the whole damned frame) from any ten speed, and you have 12 volts pumping no problem, which is plenty to light your LEDs, which will be all that works in terms of electric lights anymore. 1. Man invents 2. Electricity generation is really very simple. The rest of it is harder, but getting juice is no problem.
  11. Re: Is this Munchkinism? If your desolid is defined as orienting your quantum states to all be perpendicular to our reality (or some such BS) whereby the hero effectively both exists and does not exist, I could see that POSSIBLY being a way to justify an invisibility to danger sense - if you don't truly exist in the portions of space-time that we use, perhaps you can't be perceived as a threat. Maybe if your Density Manipulation has to do with an ability to aggregate dark matter to yourself, or to become dark matter itself to a greater or lesser extent. 80% of the known universe is made of the stuff, and I'll be damned if I can figure out how Danger Sense would sense it, or even how it would be a danger. Which brings me to another point. When desolid, what sort of danger are you? Would danger sense really include the prosepect of a mental attack? Depending on the SFX, I suppose.
  12. Re: Is this Munchkinism? Ditto. I could even see an EDM based character developing that sort of invisibility (it's a form of indirect attack - it comes backward from the future along the timestream, so you can't see it coming, even with danger sense. OK that's awesome, I have a new super coming down the pipe. From the future.)
  13. Pulp Hero, possibly the single coolest game supplement since ... I don't know what's ever been this cool ... anyway, the entry for Ethiopia tells an incomplete tale. There are mysterious locations there to rival just about anywhere. Oh, and hang on to your fedora - they may have the Arc of the Covenant. Rock Hewn Churches, Obelisks, and some old box.
  14. Re: Musings on Random Musings I love my smug feeling of cable-less-ness. Very well, carry on. How 'bout the good will? They are typically filled to overflowing with extra TV sets as the world gradually goes flatscreen.
  15. Re: Musings on Random Musings Now's your big chance to kick the habit altogether! You're on the very cusp of it! Imagine the feeling a smug superiority in hearing your coworkers discussing Dancing with the Stars when you don't even know what channel or night it's on! Think of all the extra time you'll have to play with a squirrel once L&O is completely off the agenda - forever! Spend the $75 on books, musical instruments, accessories for the boudoir, whatever! Kill your television now, before ownership becomes mandatory!
  16. http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2007/10/hanging-monasteries-of-world.html Where did your hero learn the secrets of the ancients?
  17. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Steve Long has the patience of a saint.
  18. Re: Is Leaping too Cheap? I would say yes, and further I would allow a basic breakfall or acrobatics roll to turn a fall into a jump. Back to the physics issue. Gremlin is a superleaper, with 50" inches total of accurate leaping and X16 NCM. He can jump for just shy of a mile, but it takes him 16 seconds (phases) to do so, at a leisurely 225 MPH. Of course, this requires a tremendous parabolic arc, up for eight dizzying seconds, and back down for eight equally dizzying seconds. He achieves a height of 1024 feet (about 170"), with an initial leaping velocity of 284 miles per hour. So, I would argue that with a NCM, the safe falling distance increases a great deal. Additionally, Gremlin has GREAT shoes. Addendum: I looked in the Ultimate Brick, to see what it had to say about "realistic" leaping. Due to his small size (4 levels of shrinking) and his great strength (40) he must take care when leaping not to hurl himself into low earth orbit.
  19. Re: Why would I put Fast Draw on a superheroic character? For changing clips.
  20. Re: Is Leaping too Cheap? No matter the cost savings, do not purchase your extra inches of leaping with the Incantation "Pull!"
  21. Re: 10 Most Fascinating Tombs in the World In a dream in 1993, I was drowned in a pool in at the center of Newgrange. I haven't been there yet, and I'm a little afraid of what I will see when I go.
  22. Re: Is Leaping too Cheap? Leaping & Physics: I'll wait for The Ultimate Leaper to go to publication before speculating too heavily. I'm a big fan of leaping under certain circumstances, and I'd be interested to figure out the ceiling height necessary to make a combat leap (all of which have the same height for any given gravity, thanks to our good friend physics, specifically acceleration and gravity). The question (as I see it, and remember, this is a game and not a physics simulator) is how long a non-combat leap takes. Is it 12/(2SPD) seconds for a non-combat move? This seems more likely than half a second, but I guess that's possible, too. Either one leads to irrational results. I'll take half a second, first, since it's easier. That's about one lousy foot (two feet, really, but one of them is up, and one of them is back down. That also means that the Amazing Po-Go Boy, with 40" of leaping, leaps 20" in a half-move at an astonishing 288 KPH. The option two produces startlingly irregular results. The Amazing Pogoslug, SPD 2, has 40" of leaping. It takes her three seconds to to make that half move. She launches herself 36 feet (5.5") into the air with each leap. The previously mention Po-Go Boy, SPD 6, makes his half move in a second, launching himself a mere 4 feet into the air. These are weird results because even Werner Heisenberg couldn't figure out how anybody ever hits anybody in combat using these calculations. Me, I use option 3, and I disregard gravity, acceleration, and physics in favor of handwaivity and fun. Noncombat, half-move leaping can be made indoors under most circumstances, as far as I care. Longer leaps after that take more time. As for the price points, Psylint pretty much covered it, but I will add this - non-combat leaping is slow. Really slow. I won't even get into the physics argument.
  23. Re: 7 Underground Wonders of the World Descending into caves that are famous for containing radium strikes me as short sighted somehow... All the same - VERY cool link! Rep for you.
  24. Re: Not your father's D&D Since I grew up on D&D, I have a hard time imagining a fantasy adventure system that did not involve, at some level, mugging ugly people and taking their stuff. It's a fairly ingrained meme in the medium, and an unecessary one. I can conceive of a number of campaigns that didn't work that way to begin with.
