  1. Re: Altered Reality (making yourself) My last gaming group made a routine habit of taking real-world items, scenarios, and characters and items from movies and discussing them in game terms. This was usually done after the game and after "the girls" (the GMs 8 and 12 year old daughters, who were the finest role-players I have every had the privelege of playing with) had gone to bed. (You wouldn't believe how many ways there are to write a leatherman.) Naturally, the subject of writing ourselves would eventually come up, so we made a project out of it. Our stats and disads were determined by everyone else, so as to avoid ego-based inflation. Where possible, we used real-world tests. We went to a gun range to see how many times in a 12 second turn we could move 6 meters and fire a 9mm reliably and accurately (which, btw, averaged at about 3) to determine our in-game speeds. As far as skills went, we used published package deals wherever appropriate and feasable. The rest were "eye-balled" and were always subject to group debate. We didn't really worry about "percentages" or degrees of skill. The question was "Can you reliably and realistically do X?" if yes, then the skill was assumed bought at a standard characteristic roll. At the end of it, my friend Randy - who was going through army ranger training at the time - came out highest at around 120. I came out second at around 100 because I hold dan ranking in a martial art and am proficient with most hand-to-hand weapons. Handled constructively, it's a very entertaining exercise. We never got around to playing ourselves, though.
  2. Re: Champs and players with no comic book background Nope. No comics whatsoever. I came in via the RPG trainingwheels known as D&D. The closest I come is that, after switching to Hero, I watch the cartoons.
  3. Re: Cities of the Future To offer a different line of thinking: A city is defined as: A center of population, commerce, and culture; a town of significant size and importance. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com) The need for public or private transportation as well as various other forms of infrastructure is based on the primary need of every city: SPACE. Be it horizontal, vertical, or other ( ). And space on the surface of a planet is, naturaly, limited. So, as a population grows, population centers will need more and more space to accomodate it. As technology advances, I think cities will be found in more and more places that are currently unavailable: Undergound. Underwater. Floating. Airborne Cities (Any sufficiently advanced technology, right?), Space, and, depending how far out on the Tech Tree you want to take your campaign, Extradimensional spaces. Imagine cities with entire sections of it tucked away to another space. Just another 2 cents.
  4. Re: Your greatest Chmapions moment "I have a catapult. Give me all of your money or I will fling an enormous rock at your head."
  5. Re: Your greatest Chmapions moment I had a long-standing VPP Telemechanic named Arch. One of the other PCs had some five hunteds on his character, all on an 8-. As it just so happened, the GM started rolling dice, and all five showed up. At once. Combat Ensued. Myself and another PC were inside a bank dealing with one villain, while the other three PCs were outside dealing with the other four. Through four turns of combat, I finished off the villain inside, after he'd KOed the other PC. I walk outside the bank, to find myself facing off with the four other villains. They'd taken the entire party. They bantered at me, demanding my surrender. I don't remember what exactly was said, but I basically told them where to stick it, and whipped out the VPP. Four shots fired. Four villains down. 1. 2. 3. 4. I picked up my friends and walked away.
  6. Re: Cities of the Future I was going to offer a rebuttle to Mutant for Hire's last post, but Senanju's beaten me to it, and has done so much to my liking. *Repped*
  7. Re: Batman Begins: Batman My one comment on it is that you're forgetting the whole reason for the cowl and outfit: To strike fear. I'd give him another 10 PRE, OIHID. Other than that, looks respectable.
  8. Re: Teleport catcher My first thought was to buy a mind control, invisible power effects, only to tell target where to teleport.
  9. Re: [Creative] Need help! Slightly more gritty: No reason. They're not at war. The werewolves that were seen are professional assassins. This vampire has something, did something, killed someone, or other wise p!$$ed someone off, and has been contracted out to a group of elite supernatural assassins. Just my 2 cents.
  10. Re: Help Me Populate a Race Okay, these ideas are great. Please keep them coming. To answer a few of the questions: The eggs are both infinite and finite depending on the planet. i.e. One planet will have a dispenser, while others will have a single egg. The eggs are relatively fragile, but serve no other purpose. Everyone has the same detection gear (supposedly). No, you can't turn them in early. You have to keep them. The race has devolved into a great deal of corporate sponsorship. And no, there's no limit to what technology you can bring with you. I personally plan to have one or two full-powered warships as racers. If a race team / racer has governmental sponsorship, it will be veiled through a dummy corporation. Yes. Everyone has pretty much the same technology for space travel. Think Babylon 5. MASS media coverage, on a galactic scale, although the media may or may not be able to keep up with the racers. There is a time limit on the race, I just haven't decided it yet. I'm also considering requiring the contestants to check in with race officials at certain time intervals to verify that they're still in the race. (i.e. not dead) The race commission is a separate corporate entity. They are in charge of keeping the rules and the distribution of the prizes. I imagine they have some governmental backing, however.
  11. Inspired by the success of the Dark Champion's "Help me Populate a Spooky Hotel", I'm trying my luck here. I'm beginning a campaign around an intergalactic race. The premise of the race is this: The race commission provides maps. On those maps specific planets / areas are selected. On those planets, somewhere, are small silver eggs. (Yes, the players have a means of detecting the eggs.) The racer's jobs are to find as many of these eggs as possible and return as quickly as possible. Naturally, "agressive competition" and piracy abound. (What the refs don't see, they can't disqualify you for.) What I need are ideas for planet settings, the location of the eggs, and any fun "complications". Any takers?
  12. Re: Help Me Populate A Creepy Hotel Alright, the rest of these, I could see justified any number of fun and interesting ways. But this one... I gotta ask: What the hell???
  13. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... In retrospect, this isn't nearly as funny as I thought, but it caught me off guard enough that I was broken for several minutes. GM/ME (pre-game summary): "When last we left our intrepid heroes --" PLAYER: "Aww CRAP! We've left our intreptid heroes!"
  14. Re: I need help with a couple power ideas, please. That's sneaky and malicious. I love it. Consider it stolen.
  15. Re: I need help with a couple power ideas, please. I had a character build very similar to that (he used force walls to "bubble" attacks for later use). Without working the numbers for you, it was a Missile Deflection / Reflection w/ *Delayed Effect* (with the standard INT/5 limit) bought on the reflection. It was stretching the rules ever so slightly, but my GM liked the idea enough to not only allow it, but use it against us in another campaign. For your particular build, I'd say yes, you'd have to buy it Uncontrolled. Damage sheild doesn't have the right effect for what you're looking for, and the variable energy blast doesn't have the versitility, right? Anyway, just my 2 cents.
  16. Re: GM's "Notebook" First, my own gaming style tends to be very episodic, with one game session leading into the next one over a story arch of four to six "episodes". I tend to not do "major arcs" because my group is very fluid in player attendance. So, I have a hard-copy list (in the form of a sketchbook) of any of these "minor arcs". I'll never get to all of them, but when an idea hits me, I jot it down. It may not even have anything to do with the game I'm currently running. This book is also where I jot down any nifty character concepts that cross my mind, as well as the occasional power build. During a gaming session, I have a Word and an Excel document open. In the Word, I write down what I need to know of the current episode plot to keep the game going (generally written about twenty minutes before game-time) and any pertinant information as it comes up. My Excel is my combat sheet. On it I keep my players pertinant combat information (Speed, Dex, OCV, DCV, Defenses, Standard Attacks) and also that same information for any NPCs/Enemies that are likely to be in combat. Under that list on the same sheet is running Body/Stun totals for everyone in the combat.
  17. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... The backstory's a bit complicated on this one, so I'll just throw it out: Character 1: "So let me get this straight... we're going to take this army and invade? Basically, we're leading a crusade...?" Character 2: "Yes." Character 1: "Just checking because, historically speaking, the crusades never ended well...." Character 3: "Historically speaking, the crusades never started well." Character 2: "Historically speaking, we've never led a crusade."
  18. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... From a pick-up starwars game last night: A wookie and a human walk into a bar. (stop me if you've heard this one...) When questioned about his comrade, the human answers, "Him? He's my fur coat, I just haven't had it killed yet." Later in the same scene, the wookie is questioned by another wookie, to which he responds, "Oh, Him? He's my condom. I just haven't used him yet." ------ "If we're not here to make trouble, what the hell are we here for?" ------ On trying to break into a prison: "We'll get the wookie arrested. Just think of all the things you can hide in a wookie." ------ "As long as we come out of it alive, it's alright." ------ Two Jedi, A Killian Ranger (alternate force tradition), and two droids are breaking into a prison disguised as maintenance workers. The Killian Ranger and one Jedi are arguing in a corner, attempting to look nonchelant, when they are approached by a dark jedi and the obligatory cadre of stormtroopers. Dark Jedi: "I'm not sure... Which one of you is it?" Ranger: "What do you mean? We're just cleaners." Dark Jedi: "Spare me. Which of you is the Jedi?" The Jedi and the Killian turn away from him and huddle. Rock, Paper, Scissors ensues. The Jedi throws scissors. The Killian throws rock. Jedi: "****." Ranger: "HA!" Points to Jedi "He is." ------ Just after the group has defeated the DJ, and finishes dispatching the stormtroopers, another three platoons of stormtroopers enters the causeway, escorting the prisoners we'd gone to recover. With bodies littering the floor, the Killian ranger calmly steps up to the officer apparent and says, "We'll take them from here." Persuasion check = 1,1,1 "Oh, okay." And they turn around and leave.
  19. Re: DNPC: My Cat Actually, I've seen this one done. In a rather short lived campaign with some friends, during the process of creating our characters, we all noticed that we all needed another five points in disads. Then somebody had the brilliant idea of "Why don't we get a cat?". So, five points of DNPC later, the team suddenly aquires a cat. It quickly became something of the team mascot, going with us on our nightly runs. It became quite common for one of us to turn to another and say, "We've got this handled. You go get the cat..." And yes, sooner or later we all chipped in to make it a follower, too. Best "Cat Burgler" you ever saw.
  20. Okay, in my gaming group, we've allways talked about building a character who's powers were the ability to take an incomming (ranged) attack, absorb it, and hold it to be unleashed later against someone else. I mean, we've been talking about a concept like this for years, and we've always agreed that the best/only way to build it was missile deflection attached to a VPP/Mimic pool. And, we've seen a few characters built on the concept. The problem is that that construct is just too expensive to be effective. Then, a few days ago, while I was drifting in and out of consciousness in my Sociology class, a thought struck me: Missile Deflection & Reflection with Delayed Effect bought on the Missile Reflection. I realize that Delayed Effect is supposed to be used for Fantasy Hero games, and might be overbalancing in a Heroic setting, but it just seemed so perfect that I had to try it. I'm building the character now, actually. Has anyone out there come up with/played with this concept before? Any thoughts or suggestions?
  21. Re: I' m in a philosophical mood tonight. This reminds me of something I read in "The Tick": "I don't want to stop crime, I just want to fight it!"
  22. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... From my group last night: "You had the box? What did you do with the box?" "That's between me and the box!"
  23. Re: Super Monster-Hunters Need Your Help! Hmm... In my gaming group, this theme has actually been done several times, on several different power levels. The one that we've found that works best is what we lovingly call "Super Agents". It's essentially, the players build themselves an "agent" with no powers whatsoever, just stats, skills and perks, usually somewhere around 150pts from a 75pt base. Then, after that, they get fifty (or so, depending on what you want) points of "Powers" to represent their supernatural abilities. Now, this can either be designed by the players or by the GM depending on what the GM wants to do, or whether or not the players are intimate enough with the system. It's a good power level. Guns are still very bothersome, if they're there at all. As are small squads of agents. On the other hand, getting effects like the "Charmed" stopping time is nigh impossible, but Buffy is very doable.
  24. Allright, quick question: I'm working on a telemechanic, and I wanted to write him up a vehicle. Then my friend gives me the idea of making it a shapeshifting vehicle. So, if I'm writing up multiform for a vehicle (a bike that turns into a jet that turns into a mecha, etc. etc.), which I'm beginning to think is a very nasty idea, What is the base points for the vehicle to be used in the multiform? To put it another way, if I write up the bike (say 30 character points, 150 vehicle points) as the base form with the multiform, and then want the multiform to be a jet, would I use those 30/150 points as the point base for the jet, too?
