  3. Re: Help with naming a spider themed character. can we please stop posting pictures of spiders? I have a fear of them that is best described as totalfreakoutednessophobia. How about naming him Arachnophobe. Or I can get a can of raid and just feel better about life.

  7. Re: Super Fantasy- The Land of Mar'Veldc Martha and Jonathan were simple tenant farmers from the village of Kent, raising enough food to pay their taxes and survive a healthy life. They had everything they could desire except for one wish. But that would never happen. When Martha was a child she had become sick for nearly a year, she recovered but discovered herself unable to ever bear a child. Life was perfect until the invading army came. The king and his army fought valiantly, but were defeated by Lionel, a powerful and charismatic warlord. Lionel was swift in his conquest and once he had slain the king, crowed himself the king and called himself Lionel Rex. Taxes were high, forcing many to loose their land. The kings men took what they wanted, often leaving people hungry or without a home. Even Jonathan and Martha saw their farm dwindle each year as it was taken to pay taxes. One evening the couple made their way to the ancient grove of the old gods and prayed for salvation from the evil despot Luthor. In those moments their prayers were answered. The grove was filled with blinding lights and deafening thunder, shocking the couple. When they could see again, there in the center of the grove, was a infant boy. The two took the child in as their own and raised him, naming him Clark after Martha's father. They worked even harder to provide a home for the lad. The child was raised with love and compassion and a sense of justice. His life on the farm, working hard, honed him into a strapping young man, strong and healthy. Many neighbors commented how he never seemed to get ill. Not that they complained because the young man would often help them with their farm work after doing his own. When Clark was about 16 years old a company of the king's soldiers came to the village and demanded to be feed and provisioned. There was no way the village could supply them with enough food and hope to pay their taxes, so the village headman refused, begging for mercy. The captain of the company laughed and drew his sword to strike the fool. Or that was what he attempted. From behind a powerful hand caught his wrist and held it tight. Clark stood over the soldier unmoving. The captain was shocked and ordered his men to help. No one in Kent was really sure of the details or if they were they were keeping them a secret. The soldiers failed in arresting Clark. Several broke swords in attempts to strike the young man down. All of the ended up unconscious or running away. The village was safe, but Clark's parents knew he would be in danger. They quickly packed Clark's bags and pressed what few coins they had saved over the years and sent the lad off to a relative in the capitol city of Metropolis. Clark's was sent to live with his great-uncle, Perry, a scholar and operator of one of the cities only printing presses. Clark began to study under his uncle and began to dress less like a farmer in an attempt to not draw attention to himself. He learned to read and write and would spend much of his free time listening to tales and news in the inns of Metropolis. Clark began to write these tales down and managed to convince his uncle to print them. Living in the city, Clark began to see even more atrocities. Lionel Rex had been found dead and his son, Luthor, had been named the king. Clark vowed that day to fight for justice and free the kingdom from the rule of Luthor Rex.

  10. Re: The best questions you can ask! Not really a question. "Look buddy, I know you have information I want. I could stand here asking questions and having you refuse to answer. I could wait and slowly wear you down until you told me want I want to know. But that takes time I don't want to waste. Conversely I could drag your sorry butt to the top of that skyscraper and dangle you by your ankle, listening to you scream and beg for mercy, but even then you wouldn't tell me everything I need to know. So instead I'm going to shove you into this handy wood chipper here, and let your buddy tell me everything I need to know without any pretense." Granted this method of interrogation isn't going to work if your hero has a CvK or there isn't a wood chipper handy. If that is the case I recommend this method. "Hey buddy, why don't you tell me everything you know. Because if you don't I'm going to let everybody, and I do mean everybody, know just how helpful you were. I'm going to be your best friend. When you wake up in the morning, I'll be standing on your front porch with a fresh cup of coffee and your morning paper. Everyone will know you and I are best buds." Nothing makes a mook fear for his life when he realizes he's just become a DNPC. Another method that might work. I call it the "Klingon Method". Step One: Line up all the captured agents against a wall. Step Two: Use whatever power you have to turn the first guys head into tapioca. Step Three: Quietly look at the next guy in line and say "Talk." If he doesn't answer repeat Step 2 and 3 until someone answers or you run out of captured agents. Note: This method may get you a new Hunted Disadvantage or three.
  11. Re: [Character] Paragon I have a character named Paragon in my universe as well (Hence my board name). My Paragon is the "Superman" of the world and an NPC so I've never stated him out as he's just a color NPC. He too has a very simplistic view, he doesn't understand the "shades of gray" heroes. I was going to suggest taking Political Science as a major. Understanding how governments work sounded like something that that such a character would embrace.
  12. Re: In Praise of the Champions Universe The Champions Universe is almost a parallel to the growth of comics since the 60's. There have been shining moments of greatness as well as mistakes we all wish we could forget. George MacDonald, Steve Peterson, Bruce Harlick, Ray Greer and Mark Williams are the Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, and Jack Kirby of this whole shebang. Creating a place were dreams of being a superhero could come true. Aaron Allston and Denis Loubet are the Marv Wolfman and George Perez, taking the potential of the Champions game and refining it bringing sophistication and respect to a "childish" medium. The whole "New Millennium" Era could even be compared to the horror that was Image Comics. Steve Long and DOJ resemble in someways the revitalization that sparked comic books much like Grant Morrison's JLA revamp. Champions has reflected the comic book industry, either accidentally or on purpose and we are lucky enough to have been along for the ride. I'm looking forward to 6th Edition and Champions: Online and hope that it marks the next great era of my favorite pastime. I also pray that it doesn't remind me of House of M or Infinite Crisis. Peace
  13. Re: Super Fantasy- The Land of Mar'Veldc Green Lantern - Once a powerful prince, Hassan Jo'dan, was tricked by his evil vizier and imprisoned into a magical jade lantern. Centuries later an aspiring artist, name K'el Rain discovered the lantern and when he cleaned it freed the trapped prince. The time in the lantern imbued the prince with impressive magical powers. Together they fight the injustices and evils of a kingdom that has been plunged into darkness. Crossbones - Once he was the most feared pirate on the high seas, plundering and destroying any ship that crossed his path. His names was told to children by their parents to frighten them into good behavior. His only rival on the open sea was The Skurge. Crossbones was afraid of no one. Then one day he spied a ship on the water he hunted and without hesitation he attacked. Little did he know that ship he went after was commanded by the Red Skull. The demonic skull was too much for Crossbones to handle and his ship and crew were laid to waste. Red Skull was impressed by the sheer audacity and fearlessness of Crossbones and spared his life as long as he swore eternal service to him. Now he works for the Red Skull, killing and terrorizing all in the name of his dark lord.
  14. Re: Hand to Hand Reflection I've used to methods to handle this question. One is a Damage Shield. You can build limitations on it that refelct how much damage can be returned. Method Two requires building Martial Maneuvers. Just add Counter to all abilities. Or you could get silly and build an EDM power that sends the character to a world were the person that just attacked him is getting punched by him. Hahahha
  15. Re: Dr. Destroyer Trilogy I'll have Part 2 posted by tomorrow.
  16. Re: Dr. Destroyer Trilogy Actually I managed that in ONE game. We played for 4 hours, took a 1 hour lunch break and played for 4 more hours. I had one player who came from 200 miles away and another who came from 800 miles. I had a small window. The pacing was important and things went well. The player of Masquerade was a first time Champions player, but she is an incredible role-player so I wasn't worried. She amazed everyone, which is a huge feat considering there was over 50 odd years of combined Champions experience at the table.
  17. Years ago I ran three one-shot games that had Dr. Destroyer as the uniting factor in all three stories. Part 1: Dawn of the Destroyer (Four Color, Modern Era) Dr. Destroyer has planned to release a virus across the entire Earth. Billions would die but the survivors would all possess superpowers, forever changing the balance of power on the planet. The news of this impending threat reaches the population of Earth resulting in mass riots and chaos spread everywhere. Heroes around the world are hard-pressed to stop the actions of the panicked. To make matters worse Dr. Destroyer releases a small dose of the virus to show the world the threat. Only a few heroes remained to actually try and stop Dr. Destroyer's plans, an unlikely group, forced to use what skills they have to save the world. The Altruist (played by Craig) - Once one of the most powerful telekinetics in the world, but self-doubt and bad times had whittled away at his confidence enough that even it even effected his level of power. Dragon (played by Ringo) - An ancient Chinese dragon that has assumed human form to better understand mankind. Darkwing (played by Braun) - A dark, defender of justice unable or unwilling to accept that he is not a comic book character. Mecha X (played by Matt) - A young man born with reality altering powers, hindered only by his love of anime. Masquerade (played by Kim) - A government assassin with the ability to alter her shape and read the thoughts of others. Vanguard (played by Bob) - A silicon creature who believes he is a human capable of altering his form. Has assumed the identity of a long dead hero. Peacekeeper (NPC, was going to be played by Kim's Husband but he couldn't show) - A police officer who, when faced with stress, transforms into a flying, super strong hero, all without his awareness. The heroes first learned that the creator of the virus was in hiding in the Rocky Mountains, protected by government agents. Unfortunately they arrive to find agents of Dr. Destroyer in the process of assaulting the safe house. Trickery and luck are on the heroes side as they defeat the assault squad and rescue the doctor. While the doctor is preparing the counter agent, a second assault by Dr. Destroyer's agents is launched against the doctor, lead by Gigaton. The heroes manage to win the day, barely. In the process they discover the whereabouts of Dr. Destroyer, an island floating in space. An attempt to assault the island base fails and the heroes are 'captured' by Dr. Destroyer and invited to side with him. He explains that he long ago planned the events and all his actions in the past were simply steps leading to this day, including the death of the Altruist's family, friends and his downward spiral of self-confidence. In a fit of rage, the Altruist attacks Dr. Destroyer, the rest immediately attack Raksasha, and eventually manage to escape into the base. While Darkwing distracts Dr. Destroyer, the rest attempt to disable the delivery devices that hold the virus, before they can be launched towards Earth. Vanguard is killed, his silicon form torn to pieces. Darkwing is badly injured and fails to stop the launch sequence. The rest attempt to stop the launch bay doors from opening. The Altruist rushes to attack Dr. Destroyer, his powers restored to their original level, making him the only chance to stop Dr. Destroyer. Dragon, knowing that he can no longer deny what he his, calls upon his long unused magic and summons the spirits of dead warriors and the ghosts of thousands arrive, among them many fallen superheroes, among them Vindicator, the assumed guise of Vanguard. The ghost of Vindicator, joins with the remains of Vanguard, healing him at the cost of both their psyches, fusing them into once person. The rest do everything they can to disable the devices and stop the launch doors. Meanwhile the Altruist and Dr. Destroyer battle in epic fashion, tearing the base apart and accidentally venting the reactor that powers it. With only minutes before the base explodes the heroes realize they will stop the virus' release, but at the cost of their lives. Peacekeeper, in his police identity is dying for some unknown reason. He is forced against his will to transform. His condition worsens and they realize some form of radiation is killing him, but he is the only one that can survive in space. Several shipping crates remain in the launch area and with quick thinking, are insulated and the heroes are sealed inside, with only a limited amount of air. Peacekeeper carries them out of the base and enters the Earth's atmosphere. The Altruist and Dr. Destroyer continue to fight, but the Doctor is proving to be to much for the Altruist, who is hard-pressed to just keep the Doctor busy while his friends escape and the reactor can explode. Peacekeeper finds re-entry to be more than he can handle, but fights against the pain and illness to get the crate into the atmosphere, his body burned and torn to pieces. The other heroes free themselves from the crate just as Peacekeeper loses consciousness and begins to plummet towards the ground. They manage to save him before he hits, but he is close to dying. The reactor finally explodes and the sky is filled with a bright flash. The heroes realize that they have won, but at the cost of the Altruist's life. A memorial service is held a week later, for those who have died in the events and to honor the Altruist. Mecha X creates an image of a flag, flapping in the wind, reflected forever in the tombstone of the Altruist.
  18. Re: Pushing daisies (tv show) One of my players built a similar power using Summon. Granted he also wrote up that a certain post-death sexual act had to be performed for it to work. I nixxed that part right away. No horking dead bodies in my games.
  19. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... "Oh, you could do that. And I could nail your head to the table, set fire to it, and feed your charred remains to the Pak'ma'ra. 20. Re: How to open a door? Now for something completely different. Have the villain get some very personal dirt of the PC's. Then threaten to reveal said dirt unless they rob the bank for him. The PC's can't tell anyone or the information gets released. Lie to the PC's and tell them to take all the money. When they leave to the drop off point with the cash, have a minion sneak into the chaotic scene and take the thing that is really needed. If the PC's follow through and let him have the money without a fight, it's only a bonus. Plus this could go a long way into destroying the PC's reputations. Good Luck.
  21. Re: I killed a fellow PC last night... On Mind Control: A few years back I was involved in a Fantasy LARP (no jokes) and myself and two other characters were faced off against a slew of Dark Elves. Well one of the Dark Elves decided to hit me with a Mind Control effect and ordered me to kill my friends. I turned and walked away, leaving the other two players standing there. Eventually the effect wore off and I returned only to get beat down by said Dark Elves. I was asked, by the GM, later, why I didn't attack the two people that were with me. I said I was told to kill my friends. Neither of those two people were friends, they were simply allies. My friends were miles away. The two people with me were shocked at the revelation. It got a laugh and made people nervous.
  22. Re: Start of an Alien Invasion So this just popped in my head: So all communication is down, everything, nothing works. But within the first year a young boy is found with telepathic powers, amazing in scale, but not overly dangerous. He can link any number of minds together for communication. He's basically got all the Mind Link. That's it. He can't read minds or blast them or anything. He also would become a valuable resource for the resistance. If the game is set 10 years after the Invasion he'd a be a teenager, probably angsty and tired of being used. So many plot hooks. Aliens trying to locate him. Him just trying to be normal and running away. What happens if he can start linking to the aliens? What happens if he discovers his powers have a galactic scale? Just a thought.

  24. Re: Cursed dice I have a friend named Ringo who has the best dice luck in the world. I believe he has absorbed the collective good dice rolls of the universe. We were playing a game of L5R and Ringo was playing a Crab Bushi, and playing to the sterotype, big jovial and strong as 10 oxes (shouldn't that be oxi?)? Anyway Ringo knew his dice luck was always good so took a ton of raises on a roll making his target number something like 45 (in L5R this is just plain ridiculous). Ringo gathers his dice (8d10's) and sets them in front of him, closes his eyes, bows his head and takes a deep breath then exhales. He picks up all his dice and rolls them. The results were staggering. He rolled 6 10's and 2 9's. In the L5R system they have a roll x number of dice, keep x number of dice and add them together to reach a target number. Ringo's character got to keep 5 dice. The GM allowed players who rolled 10's to re-roll them to add to the total. So Ringo re-rolls the 5 10's and rolls 4 10's and 1 9. Re-rolling the 4 10's resulted in 3 8's and 1 7. His total Target Number rolled was 130. One player sat in awe and then simply asked: "Ringo, did you just channel your dice fu?" From that day on we refer to good dice rolls as "Ringo's Dice Fu". He also played a mage in Shadowrun and was always found of summoning really, really, really big spirits. Incredibly high target numbers to succeed and lots of hurt in return. He'd always succeed in summoning them but take so much damage from doing so we started referring to his character by pointing out he was succesful but was bleeding out of his butt.
