  1. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" from Queen's Greatest Hits.
  2. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? "She's Always A Woman" by Billy Joel - from The Essential Billy Joel Disc 1.
  3. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Finally got a chance to see the original Not of This Earth, starring Paul Birch as the evil blank-eyed alien vampire. Despite the poor sound and picture quality (I saw it on Classic Cinema Online, in a cybercafe) it was still watchable. (And yes, I got a kick out of having the heroic cop played by Morgan Jones). Somebody should write up a Davannan template or (if still using 5th Edition) a "Davannan Powers EC. "Paul Johnson" displayed the following Powers: Mind Control,Mind Scan,Telepathy and some sort of Invisible to Sight Killing Attack which required Johnson to make eye contact with his victim. He also found high-decibel sounds painful, and probably had reduced CON & BODY due to his radiation-derived blood disease.
  4. Re: Planets of SF Author Hats Kneale: This planet has been periodically invaded by inhuman entities for millions of years. (The populace is in fact descended from a failed attempt by a race of psionic anthropods to ensure their psychic,if not physical, survival.) On this world, planetary defense is generally assigned to the scientists,as most military on this planet tend to be hidebound and dictatorial,as do the politicians. In general, this worlds technology is about 20th-century level, though the aforesaid scientists tend to have the occasional advanced gadget available.

  7. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Presumably that was "The Wizard of Oz"?
  8. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... Reread Star Surgeon by Alan E. Nourse on Project Gutenberg. Still a good read, despite the central conceit of Earth becoming a giant planetary hospital.Recommended for any SF reader.
  9. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers.
  10. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? It's sports (probably baseball) jargon. Not quite as unintelligible as Cockney,though....
  11. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Same here. There are a lot worse Godzilla movies out there.
  12. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... The last fantasy book I read was Book I in the Hidden Earth Chronicles,The Darkness of the Light by Peter David. The heroine is a Pleasurer, a type of human sex slave that bonds with her owner, becoming a beserker if that person is threatened. (Oh come on,every Peter David main adult character is at least sexually active!) The book takes place centuries into the future, when humanity has been almost exterminated by the Twelve Races, several magical species who have been exiled from their native dimension due to their warlike ways, and remain as aggressive as ever. Not for prudes or human supremacists.

  14. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? I watched Dr. Jeckyll and Sister Hyde this afternoon. Intriguing twist on a classic story, though there were a few problems with the story line, aside from the tying of Burke and Hare and the Ripper (real-life murderers) into the Jeckyll/Hyde story, which was a bit much to swallow. The first being that Mrs. Hyde's story of being a widow. Fortunately neither of her would-be lovers apparently got far enough to find out the truth. The other flaw was that the story was supposedly Jeckyll's deathbed confession, yet we see a spilled beaker pouring a transparent fluid on the manuscript, and it slowly burning away.
  15. Re: Steampunk - Source Material Actually, the best adaptation of Stoker's work I've seen is not the Coppola abomination, but the BBC mini-series starring Louis Jordan, which is now available on DVD. (Yes,I have a copy). Another candidate for a steampunk movie is The Werewolf Of London. The title character becomes a werewolf because he goes into a valley in search of a rare night-blooming flower in order to test his artificial moonlight device. Werewolfery (to use a Dr. Yogami term) is portrayed as a very nasty infection. And did anyone mention R.L.Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde? If anything, that is a definitive fit to the Steampunk genre, that would be it (as well as most of the movie adaptations).

  23. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? The last three episodes of Season 8 of Smallville. Very sad-especially the last episode, which featured Jimmy Olsen and the now-human Davis Bloom killing each other.
  24. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Currently listening to the MP3 copy of the two-disc CD set Spellbound: The Best of Split Enz in my Windows Media Player.
  25. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? I'm currently half-way through Season 8 of Smallville. So far, I enjoyed Legion the best. Written by Geoff Johns,it was a great introduction to the Legion of Superheroes, and speaking as a long-time Legion fan, I was glad to see them again, and i hope the make more guest appearance in further Smallville series. Long live the Legion!
