  4. Re: Twisted magic items The Deck of Many Wings This item initially appears to be an ordinary deck of playing cards. When any card is drawn it reveals a picture of a flying creature and the name of the creature. This grants the bearer of this item KS: Flying Creatures. (ala the WW2 Aircraft Spotter playing cards ) TNE
  5. Re: Clarke's Third Law as basis for fantasy campaign Anachronisms! The players encounter a squad of routing kobolds (some of the genetically modified refugee servants) armed with submachineguns and fleeing from their balrog captain. They are routing from a World War II Sherman tank (not all the reenactors have to be Renaissance ) and the captain is using his flaming whip to rally them. There could be Giants ala Brian Aldiss' Starship that secretly move around and repair pieces of the technology that their masters want to keep running. They could do things like secretly replace valves in the kidney shaped, tile lined "oceans" (that have diving boards). Ooh, I bet there's still some android servants with independent power supplies that weren't turned off, and they're still roaming around. Yul Brynner might even be hunting the PC's down. I'd hope to meet Anne Randall AKA Daphne, Servant Girl. (Rep to the first one who can name what I'm talking about and what Anne was doing in May 1967.) There could be a saucer shaped dungeon that crashed into White Plume Mountain for the players to explore. Or the players could be robbed by someone wielding a wand of laser beams that is actually made by Maglite. (D'oh, I bet they'd feel foolish if they figured out what the robber was brandishing.) TNE
  6. Campaign Brainstorming: Name of the Holy Planet? HI All, I'm looking for some ideas for names for the planet (ringworld actually) that is the Church headquarters. I'm not happy with: New Mecca - it's been done a lot already Holy Planet - variant of Holy See but not very imaginative What could be exotic, somewhat grand, sound ecclesiastical and yet sound original? Thanks, TNE

  8. TNA: Artifact HI All, For your review, here is the initial design of a minor artifact that will be in the first story of "The New Abbey." Comments and feedback are encouraged. TNE Disk Gun A rare artifact from a lost, possibly alien, civilization, the Disk Gun fires saucer shaped grenades that target a visible target directly or can fly around obstacles to home in on the most powerful source of radio energy within range (i.e. radio transmitters, radars, cell phones, etc.). The Anti Radiation Missile feature of the Disk Gun tells the user when there is a radio target in range; the user just pulls the trigger and the disk projectile seeks the target and attacks immediately. The user should insure that the nearest radio source is not friendly. If the disk misses it still explodes in or near the target hex. 14 Explosive Disk: RKA 1 1/2d6, Area of Effect (One Hex; +1/2), Indirect (+3/4); OAF Difficult (-1 1/2), Real Weapon (-1/4), 6 Charges (-3/4) 14 13 Anti Radiation Missile: High Range Radio Perception (Radio Group), Increased Arc of Perception [360 Degrees], Targeting, Telescopic (+8 versus Range); Passive, OAF Difficult (-1 1/2) 5 Homing Sensors: +6 OCV with Explosive Disk; OAF Difficult (-1 1/2) 32 Total Cost

  13. Re: Growing love for Star Hero and Sci-Fi games. I can really relate. I always preferred Traveller over D&D and still prefer science fiction over fantasy and other genres. A number of gamers have told me that there are two things going against sci-fi (and I tend to agree with them). First, sci-fi isnot as familiar a setting. Most people can imagine a sword, a horse, have seen pictures of medieval armor and know how big England is. But most people haven't experienced real spaceships worthy of a sci-fi story, used solar power, fixed an electronic circuit or have a concept of a light-minute (let alone a light-year). Second, is that, yes, D&D and D20 are a very common and popular system. What can you do? Start a game and run it regardless of how many show up. There are still enough sci-fi gamers out there to suppport Star Hero games. You might want to: -have it at a regular time and place -advertise it -run the game even when a some people can't make it (but let people know how you handle the missing character) -make the plot interesting, exciting and accessible (that is comprehenable) to the average player Eventually you'll get a core of loyal sci-fi players and the game will grow.
