  1. Hey, Years ago now I found a set of setting documents for a supers setting set in a city of the future called Epic City. Does anyone know of this setting? I think it is the work of a home grown game. Point me in the right direction if you know of it please.
  2. Re: Alternate initiative rules? What do you mean by Bigby's convention rules?
  3. Hey fellow HEROphiles, I was wondering where I could find official alternate initiative rules? Are there any in the main books? Are there any in the advanced players guides? I thinking of rule that elimate speed to make the game faster. Or elimate dex as the determining factor for who goes first. Is there this stuff out there officially?
  4. Hello Steve, I am currently running a Danger International style game. One of my players has bought 2x combat skill levels with Firearms. He is buying them 3 points each. Because he says that they are for OCV only. 1) Is Firearms considered a large group? 2) Is it strictly "legal" what he is doing? Buying +1 OCV combat skill levels with a large group for 3 points? Thanks so much for spending time on my question. Dave
  5. Re: Looking for how to adjudicate telekinesis issue According to the rules and the way I have always seen it yes. A character could use his martial maneuvers with his TK. It states on page 294(6E) that a character can use the TK any way he could use his regular STR. Now that being said if he did it at range he would have range modifiers added to his difficulity. It`s up to you though you can, of course, not allow it because of balance for your game. Dave
  6. Re: Source Search First of all the Horror genre requires buy in by the participants. Everyone around the table needs to be on the same page for tone and atmosphere for the game. I think once you have decided the tone and atmosphere go from there. Dresden Files is less horror and more action horror like Buffy the vampire slayer. There are quite a few urban fantasy style TV series out there. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dresden Files, Supernatural, Being Human, Blood ties, Vampire Diaries... It seems you are in between deciding if the public at large knows that the things that go bump in the night exist. Dresden Files handles it quite well. Some regular non supernatural people are "in the know" because of expierences they have. But this "in the know" group is small for two reasons. One, human beings by and large can`t handle the reality of monsters. So we rationalise to find excuses for the actions and things the monsters do. We miss remember, forget or even make up stuff that we want to believe other than the truth. Added to this the Monster communities keep a tight lid on letting the regular population see and know about them because they are out numbered. If the normal population at large were to find out about the monsters we could eliminate them because we out number them. In my opinion it is more fun to have the players squirm from time to time trying not to tell the truth to the NPCs because they need to keep the monsters a secret. You can also give them some NPCs "in the know" so that they can discuss various strategies on how to kill the local sparkly vampire. The Delta Green source book for Call of Cthulhu is basically X-files with a Cthulhu twist. It is well known and also a very good supplement. The slight twist on the genre is that the players are part of a conspiracy that hunts the alien and monster conspiracies. It also has a great section on US law enforcement agencies. Really good stuff for background material. The new WoD Hunters Hunted as you mentioned is also a good place to look. There are several free introductory adventures and quick play scenarios that outline how the world works from their point of view. They are also organised into cells that hunt the monsters. Dave
  7. Re: What is Happening with Dark Champions? I do own Dark Champions : The animated series. I will be borrowing a few of the write-ups. Although one of my longtime loves is the Batman Animated series and I would love to run a game envisioned like it. I found the Dark Champions : The animated series disappointing as a product. There were some major editing errors in my copy and the art work was not really up to the same caliber of the rest of HERO system books. I also feel many of the write-ups are a little too corny even for the animated style genre. Icons the rpg was able to get an artist that emulated the animated style. So I have never really understood why HERO games couldn`t have gotten a similar artist. Money maybe, time who knows. What would have been nice to see is "Animated" style write-ups and artistic renditions of some of the existing Champions universe characters that would fit in a Dark Champions: The Animated Series style rpg. Dave
  8. Re: What is Happening with Dark Champions? No worries Manic Typist. I agree with you. Now that you put it that way. The name itself does lend to the confusion. Some of the guys put forth that it should be renamed to Action Hero or the like. But I doubt that will happen since Dark Champions was Mr. Long's first large contribution to the Hero System. If I am not mistaken. I have that book. And in buying it, it put my friends and I on a long and fun Dark Champions gaming rollercoaster that we are still riding today. Dave
  9. Re: What is Happening with Dark Champions? Yup one of my GMs made it a regular thing to just live through the various action scenes. Dave
  10. Re: Another: StarWars in my Sandbox That is a neat idea. Can they mix and match? Meaning are the multipower slots ultra or flexible? Davee
  11. Re: What is Happening with Dark Champions? I disagree. It is fine that you see the Dark Champions supplement a certain way. But there is no confusion. The Dark Champions genre supplement states that it includes Masked vigilantes and the like. It also includes cops and robbers along with spies and action heroes. When I hear the term Dark Champions on a personal note my mind goes to images of masks and capes not spies like Jason Bourne. Don't get me wrong though I run a modern day martial arts shoot'em up using many of the rules from Dark Champions because more simply put it is meant to support gritty modern action. Dave
  12. I have a new Dark Champions game I am running. The Game is set in Hudson City. The player characters are built like supers but are all Street level. It is very much a masked vigilante/crime fighter game. As archtypes I have a "Batman" , a "Question", a "Green Arrow" and a "Punisher(minus the dead family)". Now I have been toying with the idea of a Sandbox style game. But I have never really tried it. I can usually get my players invloved in my plots. But I have been thinking that instead of always giving the players the mission or mystery why not let them discover the city and its mysteries by themselves. Now I have been running dark champions mystery style detective games for a long time. So I am skilled at presenting the hook for a mystery, and then through clues leading the players to the bad guys. But I want to do this game differently. From what I understand Sandbox games are more player driven. The GM sets up the game but the players are really in the driver's seat when it coms to the plot and where the game goes. So how would you go about running a Sandbox style game? Suggestions tips and tricks are welcome. Dave
  13. Re: What is Happening with Dark Champions? Well I am quite lucky in that respect. I have for groups that I play with. One weekly, one biweekly and two monthly. And added to that we are also loaded with GMs. I wish you luck in finding a group. Dave
  14. Re: Another: StarWars in my Sandbox Yeah I just found this thread. I read through the docs. very cool stuff. Did you playtest it more? I have for years now been trying to find a great Star Wars rpg. I have played the West End, and Saga edition. I am toying with using the FATE system. But some of the stuff here seems like a good start. Dave
  15. Re: What is Happening with Dark Champions? I can see that point. I suppose the question for me is: Is there enough interest in RPG gamse for just masked vigilante games? I haven't seen much. If they have a costume of some kind the game ends up being lumped in with superheroe games. For one of my groups the martial arts action movie or stuff closer to Danger International has been more popular. Or better put we use HERO system to play action movie type games because it can give us the "realism" we want with a flare for the cinematic. Dave
  16. Re: What is Happening with Dark Champions? The Spycraft stuff is really good. And many of thier tournament scenarios are online but again they are more Top Secret S.I. than Batman/Punisher. Good Luck though Dave
  17. Re: What is Happening with Dark Champions? I have also found all the Marvel RPG supplements online. You can get some neat inspiration from them. I would also look into Villians and Vigilantes. There are a bunch of fan sites. They have a bunch of character write-ups that can work well. I have also come across a bunch of DC RPG books. They are not as helpful though for a street level Dark Champions game. The classic Hudson City Blues adventure supplement is excellent. My players want more masks in the game so I am going to try and get some inspiration from Batman`s Rogues gallery. I plan on swapping out HERO system write-ups of the various villians. For instance the Black Harlequin is basically the Joker. Dave
  18. Re: What is Happening with Dark Champions? Are you the same Deadman that has the Hudson City Chaos site? It is a very cool site. I would love to take a peek at a few of your write ups for some of the bad guys in your background. Particularily the Muffin man. I basically took your premise edited it a bit and started up a DC game of my own. There are "powers" i.e. super powers in the universe but I am running the game very street level super. So it is closer to a Dark Champions game than a super game. Oddly enough none of my players made character with "powers". They are either all skill based or have gadgets. I am fairly new to the boards myself and I noticed the lack of DC stuff as well. I did come accross some Millenium`s End books a while ago. I have been looking to those to help run my other Dark Champion game. It is an action movie style game. I call it my Martial arts shoot'em up. Dave
  19. Re: Fantasy Superheroes I had come up with an idea for a Dark champions style Fantasy hero game. Sort of inspired by the Iron Monkey movie. The players would play masked vigilantes in a large fantasy city. There would be your normal Vigilante tropes of corrupt city guards, and corrupt city officials and various thieves guilds fighting to be the top dog. There would be magic of course and in a gadget heavy Dark Champions game magical items would replace technological gadgets. As for being superheroes? I was aiming more towards Batman and the Punisher. I do agree though that certain fantasy games particularily the high level ones can have many superhero tropes. Like it was said before though make sure your players are on board with your concept or vision of the game. Without that you may have a difficult time. Dave
  20. Re: New Campaign Idea: "X-Men: First Class" As The Only Canon I have been thinking about this same idea for a while now. "Rebooting" familiar worlds in fresh and new ways. I have been coming over to the idea with my various RPG groups, that it is easier to get a campaign off the ground if the players have to do less work to learn the setting. Taking an existing comic book setting but "rebooting" or starting it from a very specific point is a good idea. By starting at a specific spot in the setting's timeline you can leave or take what you want. Then when you introduce "new" characters from the setting the players who are a little familiar with the setting will recognise your NPCs without much exposition on the GMs part. I just recently started a Dark Champions game myself and I kind of wished I had done the same. The ohio con game sounds fun. Spideydave
  21. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... Not last week but a while ago. Actual quote from my Danger International style martial arts shoot'em up. GM(me): Okay you did enough body to kill the guy. Player 1(new to Hero system): What about the stun? Player 2(old hat with Hero System): He is the most stunned he can be he's dead. We all got a good chuckle from that one. Spideydave
  22. Hey Steve, I am running a Dark Champions game where one of my players bought a mega-scale teleport super skill named "I'll be there in 5 mins" based on the super skill from 5th ed. DC. Now he bought it with -1/4 limitation "Must pass through intervening space" which indeed makes sense. It simulates him being able to get accross the city using cars, bikes, subways, rooftops what have you. Now I was wondering because he can't perceive his actual destination he is actually making a teleport that is unsafe. Does he need to buy the advantage +1/4 "safe blind teleport"? Or does he get a "safe" teleport because of the special effect of his teleport power? Now he is not actually teleporting so he wouldn't materialise into anything like a more traditional teleport but I could rule that without the advantage he could hurt himself getting accross town. Racing accross town in 5 mins is pretty dangerous. Thanks, Dave
  23. Hello Steve, I was running my Dark Champions game and we came accross something I need to clarify. One of my players has a 10d6 hth attack(from strength and martial arts) He then bought a naked advantage for up to 50 active cost specifically a 2m radius AoE for (+1/4) advantage to simulate the ability to beat up many guys at once. Now I put a Damage class cap of 11DC on my campaign. As I was reading chapter Four "Damage and its effects" I came accross the damage class table. According to my understanding a 10d6 normal attack with a +1/4 advantage is the equivalent to adding +8d6 to the attack. Added together he has an effective 18d6 hth attack! Am I interpreting the table correctly? Spideydave
  24. If a character has the Full move dodge martial art maneuver can he about to it when being attacked by an area effect attack? I would say yes if he has a phase to abort. If the character just acted in the same segment he can`t. He would have to use the Dive For Cover maneuver which from my understanding is a zero phase action. Am I correct? Spideydave
  25. One of my players has bought Penality skill levels vs multiple attack he has bought 4 levels. When he goes to attack three opponents he is at a minus 4 per attack. Does he get to use his penality skill levels for each of his attack rolls? Therefore he is at 0 penality for all three attacks. Am I reading it right or are we doing it wrong? Jystdave
