Re: A Thread for Random Musings
Anyone researched their family tree and put it on computer? My family is doing it now. One question I raised or thought off, is exporting the info a open format that could be read in 5+yrs hense. Some formats I know of that have a long life and that are stable are:
RTF
JPEG
MP3
I'm sure in 5 to 10 years time the above three formats would still be able to read by computers. My musing was related to family tree computer programs. Inputting all the information into a family tree program is the result of lots of man-hours researching the family tree and the data entry itself. It would be a huge waste, and in some cases irretrievable waste if that information wasn't exported into a non-propriety format.
Anyone know if any open formats for family trees?
At a guess XML would be a good idea as
1) it is open
2) extensible
3) has "database" like functionality
4) can incorporate multimedia
I don't even know the name of the program being used to store our family tree information, so I can't help anyone there. This is just like the thread says, a random musing.
