If we are just going to be trolls: It could equally fairly be said that there is a puzzling tendency for those inexperienced with their wagons to believe that they can do a better job reinventing the wheel than the people who built the wagon (the wagon being the game system, and the wheels being the individual rules that make up that system). Sadly this is rarely the case, which is why we pay professional game designers to produce higher quality games than we can.

I'll admit though, It is often easier to just hit "F**k It", and make something arbitrary up. It looks really simple on paper to just type out: Stun Target (11- Roll) as a power instead of some "obtuse build", and if everybody is one the same page it works just fine... However, every element of one of those obtuse builds you complain about has a defined meaning within the game system, and it's function can be understood at a glance by anyone actually familiar with the mechanics of the system. Conversely, there isn't any RAW defining what "Stun Target (11- Roll)" means, how it works, or anything else about it. So one has to consider if it still a more elegant solution if you are still going to have to write up this new power and its mechanics and keep them somewhere the players can reference (which for most Powers takes up most of a page, even in CC/FHC), or else be willing and able to teach and/or remind your players how this new power works over and over again (potentially from memory, usually in the middle of combat, and sometimes weeks or months apart). Not to mention all the inconveniences that house rules can cause when playing under other GM's using the same base system, or when attempting to seek rules advice from a forum such as this one.

The first thing that comes to mind is a style based on Axemanship and various orcish axe designs. When I imagine orcish hordes, I can't help but put axes in their hands.

Sure, why not?  We've already seen a different actor play a younger Sarek, what's wrong with different actors playing Pike, Spock, and Number One? And I would imagine that we will meet Spock. He is the main character's foster brother, after all.

Thanks all, sorry I did not reply earlier. Lots ideas to think about. It's not something I'll be able to use right away in our game, but just a thought. We'll see what the GM let's me get away with.

It's also odd that someone with 1 STUN remaining of 100, or down 9 of 10 BOD, or even at negative BOD, can keep battling on.  But that is a compromise we accept for cinematic reality and ease of gameplay.

At 0 END, using END causes STUN.  Powers with no END cost can be used freely.

I don't recall whether it continued in 6e, but older editions did have a rule that use of a combat maneuver (but not a martial maneuver) always cost at least 1 END.  It was rarely used, but that was the rule.

Hyper-Man reacted to Surrealone in Improved Alchemical Sling - Does This Make Sense?
HM is correct that an actual sling is, indeed, counter-intuitive when it comes to adding accuracy, as someone who can barely throw something well with his/her hands ... likely can't properly operate a sling with any reasonable degree of reliability.

There is, however, a noteworthy exception: the staff sling.  This is effectively a lever with a pocket in which to place an object to be flung -- something that's light, simple, easy to use, and reliable ... without needing nearly the release timing and specialized practice/knowledge required for an actual sling.  Throwing Skill Levels (aka PSLs for Range Mods when throwing) on an OAF sound just fine to me.

I would allow Fast Draw to be used to get the staff sling, sling, or whatnot out quickly, but I would NOT allow it to be used to speed reloads, since its use in speeding reloads is for magazine changes (not single-shot reloads) ... and staff slings, slings, and the like are not magazine-fed.

The CSL depends. If the staff sling, sling, or whatnot is only usable for throwing potions because of its construction, then I think it's a 2pt CSL ... but if it can also be used to lob ammunition used to do damage, then I think it's a 3pt CSL for a tight list consisting of potions from the VPP, sling stones, and other ammunition suitable for a sling (cast lead balls are, for example, ideal ... and presumably this alchemist does things with lead, right?!)

    Surreal

P.S. Notice I avoided use of the word 'clips' when talking about Fast Draw since, as a firearm instructor, it pains me to see a magazine improperly called a clip. You have no idea how badly I loathe the 'Clips' portion of the 'Charges' RAW. Here's why: )

If rubber is available then a slingshot would be a cool way to increase accuracy and range.

The timing of throwing an object via a sling vs just throwing the object seems counterintuitive to increasing accuracy. I would think using the sling would only increase range. I might consider a naked buy off of the range based on str limitation  and apply focus of opportunity. Or just buy full ranged if the advantage variant of based on str was used originally.

I'll hazard a guess that it has never worked because megascale was coded to only work with movement, ranged and aoe powers. Technically stretching isn't ranged. It is a custom method of giving range to strength so I think a custom power or advantage will be needed.

FWIW, creating a version of this very ability is what originally inspired me to join this forum in 2004 and build my 1st 5e superhero (Hyper-Man). I've been learning the rules ever since.

    All:

In the end, the player is admittedly, and HAS admitted to be a power player when it comes to First-Person games, and now also in RPGs....thus, trying to buy every bang for his buck...or attack point for character point, in this case.

The way it is written--thanks for pointing this out dsatow--is that it is a single attack, and if it hits the target, two individual damage rolls are done, suspect to each individually offset by defenses.  I have gotten the player to admit that is what his intent was, and we are keeping it thus.

Now, for Cassandra and others on their suggestions, yes, all good, but that is not what the character was wanting to do...especially no NND-based attacks...he purposefully wants only Kllling Attacks...again, power-player thinking by my guess.

Anywho, this dead horse not only has been again beaten, but resurrected, killed by beating, and again as a dead horse beaten.  :-p  (Sorry Horse)

Through this and all the related threads about this players builds it seems pretty clear they are focusing on maximum efficiency of points. A GL like character was mentioned. Is this a superhero game?  I think asking the player what type of hero they want to play is much more important than how its built. You can certainly point out the ridiculous overlapping limitations too but I think getting their head out of mechanic-space and into describing their character in plain English is needed. It almost seems like they have a copy of hero designer but no rulebook.

There is no explicit rule permitting a character to gain altitude by running up a flight of stairs, either.  Should all players wanting their characters to be capable of running up stairs (rather than requiring a Climbing skill roll, and reduction to Climbing speed and CV) be required to buy an advantage on their Running?  Being a generous GM, I allow them to climb stairs without even a Power Skill roll.  I guess I am way too soft, allowing things the rules do not explicitly state are permitted.  Or maybe I am a malicious GM in that I would consider reducing Running SPD as a character climbs 20 stories of stairs when there is no reduction explicitly provided by the rules.

My understanding is that the authors considered this to be allowed from 1st Ed, and to be so obvious it went without saying.  The Great Linked Debate shows the latter was not correct.

As to "ridiculously overpowered", if one cannot use two or more powers as a single attack, what is the benefit of buying a 12d6 Blast, a 6d6, 6 DEF Entangle and a 12d6 Flash as separate powers (180 points) rather than a Swiss Army Multipower (78 points)?  Isn't saving 102 points (a 56 2/3% discount) for no restriction on the use of those attacks ridiculously overpowered?  For that matter, what possible benefit would there be in taking those as flexible slots (96 points) rather than Fixed slots and spending an extra 23% if you can't use that to fire a 10d6 Blast + 2d6 Flash?

Given the premise that spending more points provides more options, perhaps the authors were not so far off believing this was pretty obvious (especially when the rules were 64 or 80 pages and did not seek to define every minute detail).
