  1. Re: Help GMing travel through a mountain pass... Ok, I like these suggestions. I think Ill have them come upon an Ogre or mountain giant after 4-5 more days of travel with increasing snow and wind and such each day. The ogre will smack his stick on the ground throughout the battle and eventually cause the avalanche. The players will see it coming but wont be able to fully prepare because they will be fighting the ogre. Then the snow will drift them away. What I really need help with is adjudicating the actual avalanche. How will the mounted characters fare? How far should they be spread out? I want to give the characters a chance to affect their fate, I dont want to just tell a story about what happens when they fall down a mountain in a snow drift.
  2. So I asked earlier with some help on running my WHFRP world FH game. So far its going ok. One thing I like to do is make travel treacherous, make the world a dangerous place not just some normal happy setting with all the monsters and dangers concentrated in dungeons or other contrived environments. That doesnt strike me as realistic or believable. So the WHFRP world is Europe, and the players are travelling the Black Mountains between the Empire and the Border Princes. Its early fall, but I figure as they get higher up the pass it will be quite cold and snowy. There was a minor, really easy ambush from some goblins last session, so they know its full of mean creatures. I want to hit them with something else, something unexpected. I want to make them really think and fear for their lives. I am thinking of an avalanche that kills their guide. Problem is I know next to nothing about winter travel, snow and avalanches. One of the chars has an amulet that gives Danger Sense. It will start to glow moments before it happens, but what else? What will it sound like? How should I adjudicate it? How much damage should they take? I was thinking of splitting them up and having them resort to yelling or whatever to find each other. I was also thinking of possibly burying their supply cart, so they would have to look around for it. Then when they do find it, they cant very well carry all those supplies. Some of their horses will die. One of the characters is from Kislev, so snow will be natural to him, but he is from the steppes, so the mountains are unfamiliar. One is a dwarf, so he should be fine too. I dont think this will kill them, but it should test their mettle considerably. Im thinking as a reward the snowdrift will reveal a dungeon crawl that will have a piece or two of decent treasure. Any ideas on this are greatly appreciated. My game is sunday and Im gonna spend as much time as I can to make it good. Thanks in advance.
  3. Re: Help with my FH to WHFRP conversion I dont see why they dont worship chaos. Thats one of my favorite parts of WHFRP, I love cultists and using humans as enemies. Crazy ones who believe in a chaos god would be very formidable.
  4. Re: Help with my FH to WHFRP conversion Thats all very cool. Maybe Ill move to your town so I can play. I have a whole mess of great old world maps and history downloaded from warhammer.net, which seems to no longer exist. I like having a low magic world with dangerous beasts but with other 'men' being the biggest threat to players. Our current game is going alright, but the players always seem to throw me curves...
  5. Re: Anybody remember Space Opera? There used to be an awesome Space Opera website in French and English on fumble.org, it had almost all the books online and interviews with the authors as well as a ton of source material. Besides that, the online resources are slim. I looked high and low before I decided to get off my lazy butt and work on a conversion myself. Good luck with yours, its a great setting. Throw d20 out the window though, its an insult to the gaming world.
  6. Re: Help with my FH to WHFRP conversion I think this is a sweet idea and I wish I could play in it. I am wholeheartedly anti magic and xenophobic normally, but I understand others are not so inclined. I guess thats why fantasy is my least favorite genre.
  7. Re: Help with my FH to WHFRP conversion Youre right, it would be cool. No elves in the party though. I do happen to have a friend who is a Capoeira instructor...
  8. Re: Anybody remember Space Opera? Yes, more amazingly complex than 300 level Physics. Well, maybe not that bad but it was taxing as hell for me to run. I only had one player with any idea what was going on when we playtested it. Worked pretty well, considering, but I think partially because the players just loved the game (campaign) so much.
  9. Re: Anybody remember Space Opera? Well of the 3 authors of Space Opera I have spoken extensively with 2, not Mark Ratner. I was interested a while back in purchasing the rights to it so I could set a game of my own devising in their universe. I was told that they didnt mind if I did, but they knew Scott Bizar, who owned the company, would take anyone to court over it because he has some kind of tenuous claim to ownership of these rights. I let it drop because of that. Mechanics-wise the system is unweildy and clunky. It has some really good ideas and a ton of terrible ones. I just like the universe. I have multiple copies of virtually everything FGU ever made. I got this rush of megalomania about 1999 and decided I would win every FGU auction on ebay for the rest of my life. I gave up after about 6 months, and so for no particular reason I have a closet loaded to the brim with FGU games. A few are good, most are just a waste of time. I am meeting with some friends soon and I hope to hammer out some conversions. Ill post any progress I make. I plan on starting with racial and occupational package deals.
  10. Re: Help with my FH to WHFRP conversion Thanks you guys, exactly what I needed.
  11. Re: Anybody remember Space Opera? The problem isnt the complexity, its that you get nothing from the complexity. The books are poorly edited and the conventions arent worth most of the time. I reorganized the character gen sections and wrote up a skill list with a whole bunch of symbols and such so you could tell what was required for this or a prereq for that, and it cut character gen time at least in half. I can now routinely make characters in less than an hour. But thats a digression. What I want to do with my conversion is play Star Hero in the Space Opera universe. I want to convert their equipment and races and such, especially their ships. I love the world and its feel, but Hero is the best system.
  12. You know, the oldie but a goodie from FGU? I am about to start a project to convert it to Star Hero. Anybody out there interested in taking part and or sharing resources? I have every book ever made for the system, and virtually every book ever made by FGU for that matter. I redid the whole thing once before with my ultra realistic and amazingly complex system of my own devising. Maybe this is a better idea. I think the main thing I know I wont be doing is converting all the equipment, I tend to do it as needed. I also would like a new starship combat system. Any fellow sanity optional people out there willing to help me out? People always think Im nuts when they see 8 Space Opera box sets on my shelf. Maybe I can seem less crazy if Im actually doing some conversion project or something.
  13. For those who are acronym challenged thats Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Its from long ago when GW actually made games instead of excuses to buy their figures. Its a really good dark fantasy system with a lot of strengths and few weaknesses. Until this new version of FH it was my favorite fantasy system. So I decided this would be a good time to revisit the most successful fantasy campaign I had ever run, and to change it up I decided to convert it to FH. The project was relatively light at first. The first major obstacle was the magic system. The spells are so wildly varying in power even at the same level, but eventually I just rolled with it and made due. Now that I am a few sessions into it I notice that its hard to challenge the players without taking a chance that they will die. The 20 STR dwarf with a 2 handed axe cuts through most monsters easily, yet the halfling bounty hunter is much lesser powered in combat. I have never run FH before, but Ive been playing and running other Hero games for 15+ years. So what am I asking? If you have knowledge of the WH world and want to convert some stuff or offer ideas Id love to hear from you, on the board or in email. If you have some campaign ideas or general things that might spice up my game, send them on over. Fantasy has always been my least favorite genre, but for some reason this particular campaign was a resounding success in the last incarnation. I dont want the redux to be a failure. Any of you fantasy nuts out there who can help me, I most humbly ask for it.
  14. I have a character with 27" running that creates an electrical dynamo field which triggers their EC when velocity reaches 21". One of the powers in the EC is Tunnelling 1", 10 Def. Now say She is running at full velocity and she plows into a wall that has 11 def, would this revert to a normal Move Through, or would she just smack into the wall? She normally just does full moves to go through walls, but I recently added the Tunnelling (to prevent her from stunning herself). If I am understanding correctly, she can only use it if she half moves prior, since its a movement power right? Also, can you use Power or acrobatics to jump up to say a second floor wall and plow through that with Tunnelling, and if so how could this be combined with running movement? Thanks
