eepjr24 got a reaction from Jab Gideon in Trigger Timing
This thought came to me during this thread:
We were discussing incantations and how to stop them. I was trying to think outside the box of non-standard ways and I came up with Trigger. If I have say a rogue type who throws daggers and wants to be able to defend himself against spell casters, would a RKA (thrown dagger) with a trigger "seeing someone start incantations" go off before the spell was cast, even if the spell power was instant? I could not find anything referencing how long things like Gestures and Incantations take to execute besides:

(6e1, 382) "(If a character has two or more Instant powers that require Incantations, or Constant powers that only require Incantations to activate, he can activate them all in the same Phase.)"

That implies less than a half phase but it pretty vague.  If the caster is damaged, that would trigger:

"If he takes damage or is adversely affected by any power that requires an Attack Roll or MCV Attack Roll while he’s Incanting, the power doesn’t turn on or immediately turns off."

As always, thank you for your time and effort for the community.

Also note (and this will need to be reviewed by the copyright owners) that there are some exceptions to the copyright rule. Obtaining permission for a specific purpose is one exception to consider and fair use is another. The first is your best bet, obviously. In the second case you may want to check with legal counsel, but there are cases where sharing a pdf (via showing pages in a meeting, not by transferring a copy electronically to another party) in a teaching setting could fall under fair use. Personally, I find the prices for Hero products imminently fair given the amount of work that went into creating them, so a better strategy is probably to locate used copies of the physical books online for purchase as people get the money.

You are listing a HeroSystem6e character sheet update for Roll20. Are you aware that there is an existing importer for the HeroSystem6e character sheet? It is currently in version 5 and actively supported (by me). If you would like to coordinate reach out and we can chat. I can be reached here or on the Hero Discord as eepjr24.

Caveat: If you are looking for an official answer, you might want to try a private message and ask permission to publish the answer.

For me, personally, I am very hesitant of other people's "house rules" as I find them to be generally untested and rife with potential conflicts and unconsidered implications to existing official rules. I also don't like the idea of having published "house rules" because then people use it as a justification to move those same rules into campaigns or settings where it has received even LESS testing than it did in the intended campaign or setting.

So I am all in favor of spelling it out very clearly (and early in the book) that these are house rules only, intended for use in this setting only and the reasons for having them in the first place. I don't really see how it is going to detract from a product for people to know up front that the content is not part of the official universe since you are publishing your own setting in the Hero System.

I know some will say this is over the top, but if you only have one template for your humans, you are shorting yourself. Factions exist within groups, groups themselves have different cultures with a regional area (country or otherwise), which change as you get to larger regions with commonalities and differences affecting conflict, trade and all the other human interactions that are important to RPG's. Your other "races" should be just as complex and nuanced.

I don't have a lot to add on elves specifically, but I prefer games without the typical D&D racial tropes or even hard skew racial bias toward morality or immorality. The campaign I am currently working on has some non-humans, they pre-existed the humans and are animal hybrids of various types. They are largely in hiding now due to conflict and prejudice having driven their numbers down to a level that does not let them subsist in open conflict with humans.

As to what alternate races allow us to do that having humans alone does not... nothing if the players and GM are open minded enough. But it does allow people who are less open to confronting their own internal biases to see those played out among a different kind of "other" and potentially a safe environment for them to change their minds and become more accepting of their fellow humans of other ethnicities, gender preferences, social classes, etc.

I solve this idea with one racial template, but multiple cultural ones.  Which any race can take.  You're a dwarf raised with Varcol?  Take a Varcol cultural package.

As an alternative to buying all the books, your players might consider picking up the Basic book. most will not need a lot more to start and you can guide them and assist when they need other things.

eepjr24 got a reaction from Kester in Perceivability clarification
6e1, 124 "Perceivability does not depend on a Power’s duration, whether it costs END, or other factors, unless special rules apply."

6e1, 374 "A power with Costs Endurance turns off when a character is Stunned or Knocked Out, and is perceivable by three Sense Groups throughout the duration of its use."

6e1, 124 "Powers that directly affect another character, including all attacks, are Obvious (see below). This means they can be perceived by at least two Sense Groups when in use."

My question is if all of those are correct? Not saying any of them are not, just making sure that adding Costs Endurance increases the number of sense groups it is perceivable in from 2 to 3 for a power? I had not realized that previously.

If it is all correct, would this also apply to Mind Link (which is normally invisible) as well as other senses bought with costs endurance?

eepjr24 got a reaction from Beast in Swords in science fiction -- why?
    So to summarize:

    1. Self Preservation. Swords are better than powered ranged weapons in instances where they will damage surroundings (starship, dome, orbital station, sensitive equipment, flammables or explosives nearby).
    2. Culture. Swords may be traditional or killing at range may only be acceptable during war, etc. A variety of cultures elevate swords or other hand to hand weapons to an art form.
    3. Stealth. Blades (and to a lesser extent some blunt weapons) excel at removing a target in silence. They are often easier to conceal from modern electronics as well, since blades can easily be made of materials that don't set off detection devices (whether they detect energy signatures or explosive content).
    4. Access / Cost. It is generally much easier and/or cheaper to obtain a blade of some kind than a powered ranged weapon.
    5. Laws. Restrictions can range from only certain weapons to requiring permits to restrictions on travel with certain weapons, etc.
    6. No ammunition / charges. You don't have to worry about running out of charges or ammunition.
    7. Cool / Intimidating. Blades are often seen as more intimidating because they provide the opportunity to cause pain for longer. It is hard to control how much damage you do when you shoot someone (especially with energy weapons) but not hard with a blade.
    8. Effectiveness. Tech may have made certain ranged weapons obsolete in some cases. Reflective armor defeats lasers, force fields stop energy beams, etc.

Feel free to add if you think of something else.

No, they cannot.  In general, Limitations selected to fulfill Variable Limitations cannot alter (or conflict with) existing/fixed Modifiers on the ability.

Another way to think about it (for your new players):  if applying Non-Persistent (-1/4) would cause Time Limit to change to an Advantage, then they are adding a net Advantage.  They would need to have Variable Advantage at a high enough level to account for the change in Time Limit from -1/4 to its Advantaged value in order to account for this. Lacking this, the points do not work out and Non-Persistent would not be a valid Limitation to apply.

My bad -- I misread the view reason text (and misremembered the rule).  The note about Persistent/Inherent is there because that's the first "blocker" that Always On is running into -- the ability has an "effective duration" of Constant in your initial post because it costs END.   It's a bit of an inconsistency in the 6E rules -- you can apply Persistent to an ability that costs END, but the rule regarding END Usage when unconscious doesn't change, so the actual/effective Duration of the ability remains Constant until the END usage is changed.

I don't make the rules...I just code HD to follow them.

eepjr24 reacted to Derek Hiemforth in Does a target's successful initial Breakout Roll against Mind Scan still reveal to the attacker the target's more precise location information?
After. The Breakout Roll doesn't happen until the target's next Phase, per this bit from 6E1 p149:  "Starting on the target’s next Phase after being successfully attacked with a continuing-effect Mental Power, he may attempt to break free from the Power."  The mentalist's Attack Roll and Effect Roll happened on the Phase in which the mentalist attacked with the Mind Scan (per 6E1 p263-264).

Or another way to think of it is, the target doesn't need a Breakout Roll until after there's been an Effect Roll, but by the time there's an Effect Roll, it's too late: the mentalist got the location from the Effect Roll.

I ended up going with Transform. It's much easier to figure the math using area of effect, I didn't have to play with Opaque or Configurable (for rougher terrain), and I don't have to worry about people arguing whether they could turn it sideways and use it as defenses. There is another spell for that already. 😃

I will likely design another one with Tunneling for use in creating tunnels, still have to figure some things as I don't want matter to be destroyed as part of the process.

Hi John. Sorry to hear you are having difficulties. The script should be in one Click on Tuesday. It has been updated so you will need the new JSON export to go with it. If you want to send me a copy of the HD file for the character I will do an export and try it out to make sure the script itself is not getting hung up on something. I had a few bugs with odd characters in the JSON export that could be your issue as well.

Edit: I will also update my gihub with the latest .js and HD JSON export format today.

eepjr24 reacted to Spence in [5th Ed R] Fantasy Hero no point Play Sheet
Posted this is Online Resources forum because it was in the Hero Download section.  But I thought I might get a better response here.

I found a character sheet in the resource section that was pretty close to what I was looking for as a Play sheet for CONs and Intro Games.  Essentially sheet that leaves out all points and give general text boxes for entering info.  The one I found that was Fantasy Hero Character Sheet form beta2.pdf Beta2 in the HERO System 6th Edition Documents section.

I’d like to upload my 5th Ed version to  HERO System 5th Edition Documents and wanted to touch base with the original poster and get their OK to do so. I went back to grab the name of the original uploader, and noticed it was uploaded by “By Guest” with no additional links to contact them

I thought I’d post a general post to see if anyone knows who was the original uploader was before adding it to the 5th Ed documents.

For distinguishing between fixed and variable slots, you can combine the already mentioned IS_MP with some clever use of ATTRIBUTE_VALUE and the isUltra() method (part of com.hero.objects.GenericObject) -- that will return true/false (as a string)....if true, you're dealing with a fixed slot.  If false, you're dealing with a variable slot.

Just note that rounding rules apply at each calculation (which is what caught you on the 1/2 END for Running)
