Elan's power ballad is as good as most 80's power ballads, I'll give him that.

I fear the Bacandforthtrian stole the flower. It was delicious.

The Bacandforthtrian is another fine product of Basil's Twisted Imagination, Inc. All rights reserved--even shy.

    Col. Lancaster
: The shelves aren't laid out in an occult symbol, are they? Customers walking from aisles 1 to 5 re-enacting an ancient Babylonian ritual?

    Me,GM
: No, the grocery is entirely Euclidean. The walls are flat, the floor is flat, there are no acute angles behaving as if they were obtuse. The only obtuse things around here are sitting in front of me.

Looks like another showing of The Attack of the Sarcastic GM.

  3. Re: Firearms in fantasy?

In a fantasy game, there's no need to follow historical events too closely.

For instance, here's an idea I had---some mages have been trying to "distill" pure mana. They have gotten impure mana, which seems to have little use. EXCEPT is goes *BOOM* quite nicely. Strange but true; concentrated mana is explosive!

Well.....that's what the people in the game world think; in fact, they've managed to distill a little bit of mana, mixed in with some carbon, sulfur, and saltpeter. Since there *is* detectable mana in there, everyone thinks it explodes due to the mana, rather than the "slag".

Thus, no-one realizes that the way to improve the gunpowder is not with magic. So, the powder is very poor quality, takes a very long time to burn, and should be used with 2-3 meter long barrels---but they don't know that, so they use barrels around 1 meter (for handle-ability) and waste most of what little power the powder has. Ergo, guns are no more powerful than bows.

BTW, gunpowder that had not been corned not only clumped, but was so fine a powder it leaked out of the barrels and formed a cloud around the powder train. A very explosive cloud.

  4. Re: Seemingly Silly Things to Model

Kind Hearts and Coronaries: All the nice people within this AoE spell drop dead of heart attacks. Definitely an evil wizard's spell.

A Night at the Operation: This spell summons a top-notch surgeon, who will willingly perform an operation on a person selected by the summoner. This spell must be cast at night. As well, the surgeon will only work on one patient, and will only do surgery; no setting of bones, prescribing/administering of medicine, etc.

A Day at the Faces: The target of this spell (the caster can target himself) will have facial features of astounding beauty for 24 hours. After which, the target will be ugly for one week.

  5. Re: For the New Dispensation

    And there was much snippage.

15 Distinctive Features: Short (Not Concealable; Noticed and Recognizable; Detectable By Commonly-Used Senses)

    Why short?

The supersonic telepathic mutant penguins with laser eyes are short, but don't get Distinctive Features for it, as they're no shorter than they should be.

The s.t.m.p.w/l.e.'s are another product of Basil's Twisted Imagination Oink. All rhymes revert. Ask about our new catalog!

NT: Subtle signs that the general manager of the 0-11 New Jersey Nets is out of his mind.

He's the manager of the 0-11 New Jersey Nets.

    Somebody had to say it.

The infamous Dr. Infamous wants it known he's not connected with the New Jersey Nets. After all, even evil masterminds have standards.

Dr. Infamous in another fine creation of Basil's Twisted Imagination, Unk. All rides in reverse.

  7. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

Well' date=' it's gone far beyond TV these days...[/quote']

    True.

It's now all anime. I swear, half the examples and a quarter of the "tropes" are nothing but anime. :thumbdown

And they're posted by anime fans (fanimes?) who act like every slightest variation is a different "trope".

  8. Re: Seemingly Silly Things to Model

Silence of the Lamps: All lamps of whatever kind (oil lamps, lightbulbs, etc., but not candles) within the area of effect of this spell do not make any noise.

Not the most useful spell, but at least it's easy to learn and to cast.

The 39 Steeps: The caster can make a tea bag last an astonishingly long time. Well liked by British mages.

Citizen Caned: A cane/rod of hickory, birch, or rattan (or perhaps other substance) appears, and starts attacking the target of this spell, striking at the buttocks and/or back of the thighs. Particularly popular in Singapore and 1800's USA/UK, but found elsewhere as well.

Rear "Window": The target has a "wardrobe malfunction"---the part of every piece of clothing that covers the buttocks disintegrates.

Blazing Saddles: The victim of this curse has to start riding bareback, as every time he sits in a saddle it bursts into flames.

Smith & Wesson Oil: The target of this spell will probably drop any firearms he's holding, as it is instantly coated in vegetable oil.

  9. Re: Zeppelins

hmmm, my Google-fu is proving weak tonight.

Anyone know any good sites for working out the size-to-lift ratios for determining how big an envelope you'd need? I'm also trying to figure out the differences between hot air vs helium vs hydrogen (or any other gasses I might be missing)?

Sorry to be late answering this, but I didn't see it until just now.

Using an old Chem-Phys Handbook, I find this formula for the density of air---If the temperature in Celsius is T and the pressure in millibars is P, then the density in kg/m³

    =(1.293/(1+0.00367*t))*P/1013.24269

Take the density for the surrounding air and subtract the density of the air in the envelope and that's your lift.

For lifting gases other than hot air, the densities (I assume at 0º and 1 atm (1013.24269 millibars) are:

    Hydrogen---------0.08998 kg/m³

    Helium------------0.1786 kg/m³

    Neon-------------0.9008 kg/m³

    Nitrogen----------1.250 kg/m³

    Ammonia----------0.7601 kg/m³

    Methane----------0.7160 kg/m³

    Carbon Monoxide--1.250 kg/m³

I don't know of any other chemicals that are gases at 0º/1 atm that are lighter than air. Note that there is:

    Water Vapor---0.8041 kg/m³

but it will condense to liquid, and that has a density of 1000 kg/m³!

To find the lift, subtract the above densities from that of air, and voila!

    Hope that helps. :)
