  1. Re: Holographic technology and the use of Flight...

Flight and Running cost the same amount (2 points per 1").

You could easily progress from something like:

    20" Running, Turn Mode

    to

20" Flight, Only In Contact With Surface

    to

    20" Flight

    to

20" Flight, Useable as Running (so that you are more maneuverable on the ground than you are in the air)

It's not like the points are locked in place forever and can never be changed. That's one of the benefits of a points based system after all...

If the GM will let me do that...

    We'll see.

Oh... and this is what the Sleipnir hologram looks like. Sorry, I don't quite have John's PhotoShop skills...

  2. Re: Holographic technology and the use of Flight...

It's been the subject of much debate between me, John T, and Dust Raven on exactly what it can and can't do.

As far as the Running vs Flight thing goes, Flight w/ the initial limitation "Only when in contact with a surface" can have the limitation bought off. If I buy Running, and later want Flight, that's a lot more expensive. (I'm trying to take the long term view.)

Yes, we want a turn mode on it - the thing is not going to work like the Lightcycles do (nor will it leave the really spiffy wall trail behind it, although that WOULD make for a nifty attack).

Part of the discussion we'd had was what would happen if she hit something. If the bike were even remotely 'real' or 'physical' and she slammed into something, the bike would (in theory) absorb some of the impact. If not, she takes the whole thing herself. Can't remember the outcome of that discussion, though.

As far as Clonus' original suggestion that she tag herself with the smartchip, good thought - or at least program a signal into SeKHMeT (her cyberdeck) that the Transit System can recognize.

  3. Re: Holographic technology and the use of Flight...

As an aside - I like the idea. :) Sounds very cool' date=' and like a handy way to simulate many a super-bike.[/quote']

Thank you - when I described this to John T and Dust Raven, both of them paused for a moment, then said in that kind of slow, thoughtful, "I knew I gamed with this woman for a reason" tone of voice:

    "I like it... yeah."

(It was really funny when John started making the Lightcycle sound effects in the background while I was telling Dust Raven about it.)

Considering Morrigan is 17, I'm just imagining some high school football jock hitting on her with the whole "you want a ride in my truck?" kind of line, and Morrigan giving him this withering look before rezzing the bike up out of nothingness.

  4. Re: Holographic technology and the use of Flight...

What do you mean by "driveable surface"? Does she wipe out when she hits an oil slick or sink if she drives across a pond? And what actually holds her up?

Well (and forgive the sheer snarky wisea** sound of this next phrase), if you want to get 'physical' about it, what would happen if you were running/skimming along a surface at 200+ mph and hit an oil slick? (I imagine there's a point where you're going so fast that you're over said problem before you realize you've hit it - whereas if she were going slower, ie normal driving speeds, an oil slick would be a problem.)

As for a body of water - I keep imagining Dash in THE INCREDIBLES booking it over the lake. How fast would one have to be going to take advantage of surface tension?

"Driveable surface" = as in "not up the side of a building" or "something resembling that place in Utah where they shot part of GALAXY QUEST where the rocks make it look like you'd be driving on bubble wrap". Highways, roads, dirt paths, sidewalks, something a land-based vehicle other than the Bat-tank could navigate.

    Does that help?

    :D

  5. First off, not sure if this goes here or in HERO SYSTEM discussion, but I'll start it here...

I have a slightly... odd idea on how to use Flight for a character of mine, but a few logistical questions have come to mind.

First, let me explain how she uses Flight. Morrigan's primary 'schtick' involves the use of holographic and computer technology. So, in keeping with that, she has Flight (Limitation: Must Be in Contact with a Driveable Surface), during which she 'rezzes' up, a la TRON, a motorcycle hologram that looks like the bastard hybrid of a TRON Lightcycle and Priss' MotoSlave in BUBBLEGUM CRISIS TOKYO 2040. (The motorcycle program - SLEIPNIR - is controlled through the terminal she has installed in her cybernetic left arm.)

But it lends itself to some interesting practical questions.

    1) If the motorcycle itself doesn't actually exist, and what Morrigan is REALLY doing is flying, not driving, would she need a driver's license for using the motorcycle on the roads? For that matter, would she need to 'register' the bike?

    2) Our campaign setting may well have the whole SmartChip thing that Millennium City has (that system that controls traffic)... how would Morrigan be able to interface with that? (Because traffic is moving at 200+ mph, and there's no way to track her being on the highway...)

    3) In great cinematic tradition, we often see the hero/heroine lay down the motorcycle to slide under something (and if you're in a John Woo film, get the bike back up and keep going)... if the motorcycle is just a hologram, how would Morrigan be able to duplicate said feat?

I'm sure I'll think of others, but those are the three that come to mind right now.

  6. Re: The Vandaleur Terror...

    Response to both posts... :)

At present, neither one of them knows. But can you just imagine what's going to happen if Adrian SUSPECTS that she's a Vandaleur, and tries using the Terror on her?

She's made absolutely no claim to being a Vandaleur whatsoever (and if Adrian has any sense of strategy, he won't tell anyone about her true parentage either). And then WHOOSH, Adrian shuts down her powers. And the rest of the Mystic World thinks, "Holy crap, he really CAN do it to anyone!"

  7. Hello again, all, after a way-too-long hiatus (or as some wag is probably thinking, "It wasn't long enough..."). We're getting ready to start John's new Champions game soon, and I have a background question the more learned members may be able to answer.

My latest Champions PC is Tarot (aka Alissandre Devereaux), who uses a really nifty Multipower based on the Major Arcana of the tarot deck. (Some of you might remember me posting her powers on another thread.) In addition to her magical abilities, she has one other major bonus - she's immortal (500+ years old).

And she's the daughter of Adrian Vandaleur. Only neither of them actually knows it. (Adrian had a fling with Alissandre's mother while she was married, and she never told her husband about the affair. And the REAL irony is that her mother, Isabella, is actually an ancestor of Giacomo Sylvestri.)

(I know - the potential for plot seeds ABOUND with this character. I am just a glutton for punishment, considering that John T is the one running the game.)

Now, according to ARCANE ADVERSARIES, Adrian's powers of "The Vandaleur Terror" only work on other Vandaleurs. Would that actually work on Tarot if neither Adrian nor Alissandre knows she's actually a Vandaleur? (I'm wondering if this works something like a Glamour - it only works because people BELIEVE it works.)

I ask because the bulk of the Mystic World doesn't know about the limitation on Adrian's power - they think he can do it to anyone.

Secondary question about the Vandaleur terror - when Adrian strips a Vandaleur of an ability, is it permanent? The background stories seem to indicate that it is, but his write-up doesn't seem to back that up.

  8. Re: Anime series as a campaign

The whole thing with Ukyo and Ayamoro, the story of the Capital, the story of Kirara and Katsushiro, the story of Rikichi and Sanae, the story of Honoka and her sister, the relationship of Shichiroji and Yukino, etc.

And regarding the dub-vs-sub debate, to each his own. :)

  9. Re: Anime series as a campaign

It's not just about who lives and who dies (although yes, the body count is the same as the film), it's how all the original material that does NOT appear in the Kurosawa film gets resolved that's spoiler-ish.

I do have to give full kudos to FUNimation's dub though (and their scripting) on this one - this is probably one of their best jobs ever. I love just listening to the show (I have the last eight or nine episodes saved as WAV files - because not all video files play properly at work - and can just sit and listen.)

    Yeah, I'm a geek.

  10. Re: Anime series as a campaign

You can skip the ads at the start - hit MENU or TITLE on your remote, and voila, you're past. Trust me, I have the entire series. It kicks major a** all the way through, the story stays strong, the characters stay cool, it is easily one of my top three favorite animes of all time.

I've also done four videos for this series, which are all up on YouTube. Watch ONLY "For Glory, For Honor, For Love, For Bushido" if you haven't seen the entire series (you can find it on YouTube by entering in "Samuraiko Productions" as the keywords, all of my videos are tagged with them).

The rest have uber-spoilers, so watch at your own risk!

FG,FH,FL,FB is one of my favorites. ;)

  11. Re: Anime series as a campaign

Two others that would make really good campaign worlds...

    SAMURAI 7 (L5R meets Cyberpunk)

MADLAX (the war in Gothz-Sonika, the notion of the Essence, all that good stuff)

    Correction, three series.

KIDDY GRADE (the ES members are Champions-level easily, and my upcoming tech character Morrigan is based a lot on Lumiere and Tweedledee)

  12. Re: Anime series as a campaign

So is Satella from Chrono Crusade. :)

I love that character. Her interplay with Rosette is some of the absolute best in the show, and she is just a bad-a** on her own. Would love to have seen a few more of her stones in action, though.

  13. Re: Seemingly Silly Things to Model

I Control the Vertical' date=' I Control the Horizontal....[/b'] You can enter any television program desired and interact with the cast as though you were actually there. It could be a live broadcast, a rerun of a sitcom from the 1950s, a telenovela -- anything. The effects of what you do in the program do not extend beyond this event, though, so if a program is repeated it will go on as if you were never there.

No, the SILLY version of this power is that when YOU want to watch something, you can make whatever you want to watch appear on the TV. This power is most useful when you can't get the spouse out from in front of the TV...

Hubby: "Come on, honey, they just started the third quarter-"

*wife glares at the TV and the Dr. Phil episode about 'spouses who watch too much TV' comes on*

Or when the kids are determined to watch pr0n, all their parents have to do is glance at the TV and it becomes the Teletubbies.

    You get the idea.

Limitation: Must be something that was previously broadcast. You can't watch tomorrow's SMALLVILLE to find out what happens.

  14. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

In our Dark Champions game, it has been said on more than one occasion that Midnight, my... whatever she is (mentalist/mystic/martial artist)... should have the Psych Lim: Must Mouth Off at Vastly More Powerful Opponent. But she really does get off some of the best taunts in the game...

We are fighting the head of the Night Dragon Clan (or rather, the guy who usurped the position). Big. Bad. Powerful. Damn near impossible to hit. He nearly kills Midnight in a single surprise attack (although she survives by the skin of her teeth). Startled the hell out of him ten seconds later when she plowed him with a 3x Rapid Fire 5d6 Ego Attack.

Tengu: "What... how did you survive?"

Midnight: (weakly but still laughing at him) "I thought... you knew... only a true ninja... can kill a ninja..."

(He was ready to rip her spine out after that one.)

The head of PSI (aka the most powerful telepath in Dust Raven's version of the Champions universe) HATES Midnight with a passion. He has an ego the size of Montana, which she delights in deflating.

Zephrem: *bellowing in fury* "I AM THE MOST POWERFUL TELEPATH ON THIS PLANET! I COULD TURN YOUR MIND INSIDE OUT WITH A THOUGHT!"

(He attacks Midnight, who sloughs off the Ego Attack with her 25 pts Mental Defense.)

Midnight: "Delusions of grandeur do not qualify as a mental power."
