  1. Re: Ninjas in a Champions game Duuuude, if the players have 350, ninjas have to have at least 500!!! Of course, 300 of those points get the limitation "Not when with other ninjas", another 100 of his points get "Not when with four or more other ninjas", and for that Keystone Kops effect, the last 100 get "Not when with sixteen or more other ninjas".
  2. Re: Gestalt of the Week I had the same reaction, but it's more like 90 seconds - they don't even need you to click-verify the email address. User name, email twice, password, click - done. Pretty painless.
  3. Re: Buffy-style Slayer and friends in Hero question "Assigned"? Been awhile since I've seen the last season of Buffy, and I never followed Angel as closely (the Watchers didn't show up much in there anyway, did they? Besides Wes, obviously, but he was more "ex-Watcher"), but wasn't the Watcher's council pretty well decimated by the end there? I don't know who's gonna be doing the "assigning". I'd think the new batch of Slayers, essentially trained by Buffy, would just pick whichever cities they wanted to live in. If more than one pick the same city, cool. Even if the Council does reconstitute itself, I'd think the example set by Buffy would mean the Watchers would have a pretty hard time demanding the Slayers do a damn thing and expect to be listened to. As far as I know, Buffy was the first slayer to even have friends, or a support network outside the Council, so there wouldn't be any standard for "Scoobies". Pretty much anyone with any exposure to the supernatural world might qualify. Sorcerers both Wiccan and non-, therianthropes, "good" demons, unwitting or accidental subjects of spells or magical accidents that have useful side-effects, people who've stumbled upon magical artifacts and learned to use them, half-breed descendants of magical creatures, mad scientists, spirit channelers/loa horses, psychics, humans turned into demons, demons turned into humans, etc. etc. And don't forget those carpenters with good bowling skills - plain old mundane people with mundane skills were just as much a part of the team. To put them on a par with the magical types, those mundane skills might be more along the lines of "Special Forces guy" or "uber hacker chick", but still...
  4. Re: Gestalt is Online Wait... So, is the version that will be sold from the Blackwyrm site and stores going to be black and white, and we have to go to Lulu for a color print of the .pdf? Or is it just comp copies that were in B&W?
  5. Re: STRONGHOLD (RESOURCES) -- What Do *You* Want To See? I've always hated the idea of generic power nullifiers, so, yeah, clever ideas for using other kinds of super-tech (and mundane tech) to deal with various kinds of abilities would be first on my list. The Pym-particle based mini-prison in the MU is a great idea along those lines, though of course it only handles one subset of powers.* Maybe a magical teleport ward (a la Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos books) would work equally well on any kind of re- and de-materializations? Hypnotic or telepathic conditioning or other b-mod protocols to convince the psychics (and others) that their powers are gone? The exile-style extradimensional (or other-dimensional) prison would be the other option I'd like to see explored. Assuming a pocket universe that needs external supplying, what protocols would you use to prevent staff from being exposed to the unfettered powers of the inmates? Assuming a parallel world empty of sapients but with Earth-normal natural resources, how would you prevent the growing society of exiles from developing the tech base to return to Earth? In both cases, how much responsibility does the imprisoning society take for protecting the inmates from each other? How can inmates whose sentences are up be extracted without letting their powerful peers out, too? *And does anyone know if they explained why long-term but not life-sentenced inmates aren't going to come out of this with brand-new size-changing powers on top of their own? It took Hank and Janet a while before they didn't need to use the "gas", but any kind of long-term sentence will presumably make matters worse in the long run - not to mention triggering a massive (pun intended) breakout...
  6. Re: COPS, CREWS, AND CABALS -- What Do *You* Want To See? Huh. Gotta disagree; the stuff Steve listed sounds great to me (minus the time travel guys, since I hate time travel in my games, and ICON - yet another villain agent group, yawn). I'll add a vote for some super-villain infrastructure like fences/hench-temps/etc., and maybe for the supers-specialist legal (and/or PR) firm (I loves me that She-Hulk). Some kind of mystic group from an unusual direction - religious, governmental, law enforcement... something to add a mundane element to the stereotypically otherworldly mystic set. I *don't* really want to see smaller-scale versions of groups we've already got, like ICON or the mini-ARGENT that was suggested. Hopefully Angelstone will get lots of detail - the CU needs a good STAR Labs dealie.
  7. Re: Suggestions for a player's Song character? I'd certainly up the Mind Control from "only to calm" to "only to instill emotions" at the very least. Maybe it's just because most of the music I listen to isn't very calming, but instilling a variety of emotional states seems to me to be the most fundamental effect of musical powers. An even more versatile "suggestion" ability is certainly justifiable, too. Different kinds of Aids like Cygnia mentioned, as well as your healing. That Force Wall seems kind of odd to me, unless you're going for reality-warping songs like the above-mentioned Tyroc - in which case you could justify any kind of power from different magical "songs". Personally for defenses I'd go more for something like increased DCV (people have an aversion to hitting the singer), or a Change Environment that hampers people around the singer (distraction). An RKA (only vs. metals, glass and crystals) could represent a shattering high note that lets the singer be at least somewhat effective against non-human threats. Insect and/or animal summoning and control from the surrounding area might work for that, too (Pied Piper effect).
  8. Re: Gestalt Player's Guide -- Free Dowload Available Much as I appreciate the free download, the concepts and the ideas involved, I have to complain again about the poor editing. Considering how much uproar the issue of art in HERO products was recently getting, I'm honestly surprised I'm the only one mentioning this. In terms of a professional presentation, I'd much rather find lackluster art than the number of typos, incomplete corrections, and at least one nonsensical free-floating sentence fragment that I've seen in both of the downloads. I'll probably buy the book anyway, but only because it's such a perfect fit for a project I've been working on. The editing made me literally grit my teeth at times, and that's not something that would normally inspire me to buy the book. Sorry to be the only negative note in the thread... There is some really cool stuff in there; I just hate to see it made to look inferior by stuff that could so easily be fixed.

  11. Re: Awareness.exe Thanks for the heads up - I just put it on hold from my local interlibrary system. As for your question, how do you feel about esoteric Detects like "Detect Travel History" or "Detect Blueprint"?

  13. Re: Brainstorming a mystical superhero mansion A few more ideas: The lighting adjusts itself to the needs and moods of the people using the room; turning off when you sleep, soft when romancing is happening, etc. Studies, bedrooms, etc. have infinitely effective soundproofing - when the door is shut, a bomb could go off outside without being noticed. In the library, even sounds that other people make in the room are muted. However, natural, comforting sounds like wind or rain, or your own breathing, aren't affected. Or maybe there is no library - just small individual shelves within easy reach of many beds and armchairs throughout the house, big enough for maybe a dozen or twenty hardcovers. The books on them are in completely random order, even volumes of encyclopedia sets and such. All the books that have been placed on any of these shelves are accessible from any of them (and there are a lot more books than would fit on the known total shelf space). If you know the book you want, just name it and you'll find it on your shelf (if the house has it). If you want to browse, each time you remove a book and replace it on the shelf, you'll find the rest have changed. There is always space for new books. Cracked spines, stained pages, dog-ears, etc. are seamlessly repaired while in this mini-L-space. The oven pre-heats instantly to whatever temperature is dialed. When the dishwasher cycle ends, it will be empty - the dishes are all put away. They're always perfectly clean and dry, without any pre-scrubbing necessary. Or, in a less modern mansion, just a family of brownies. Leave a saucer of milk out and never, ever thank them. The solarium is beneath an alien sun, one which radiates light that warms deeply, tans quickly, and never causes sunburn. And off from the wish-fulfillment end of things (because magical mansions should have some random and/or spooky stuff, too): Someone may have mentioned this already, it's a classic: certain outside windows show views that Aren't From Around Here. Should probably be windows that can't be opened. The brownies get distant relatives visiting from out of town - gremlins. Late at night, the furnace almost seems to be muttering to itself. It has a deep, raspy voice that sounds like a heavy smoker's. You can hear it through any duct, if it's quiet. It never acknowledges the inhabitants, or events in the house, but maybe it occasionally says something useful. Or it might be a completely foreign language. If you sleep in one particular bedroom, sometimes you'll find some innocuous object from a dream you had, on the nightstand when you wake up. They may or may not sometimes have... properties. There's a cat that has lived here since before you moved in. No one knows how it gets in and out of the building, or rooms with shut doors, but it roams freely. It isn't especially friendly or unfriendly towards the people it lets stay in its house, and seems to have no trouble finding food somewhere. To telepathy and any other test, it's an ordinary semi-feral housecat. But the sound-muting properties of the library mentioned above don't seem to affect its occasional yowls... or purrs.
  14. Re: Secret Identities and Teammates Possibly not relevant because it's not directly game-related, but I seem to remember a story or story arc in the Justice League which gave excellent reasons why the JLAers were explicitly not supposed to share their SIDs with each other. Obviously that's changed - in fact it's starting to bug me how often they use each others' SID names in semi-public, nonsecure settings - but come on, how often do hero teams get infiltrated, or teammates turn villain, or get mind controlled, etc. etc. Even though there are clearly good OOC reasons to share SIDs, I wouldn't think it would be the norm for NPC groups.

  17. Re: Dumbest thing... By the time I started reading She-Hulk, the only real fourth wall breaking type stuff I ever saw was the way her law firm has that big collection of Marvel back issues (authorized serial biographies) to research from. Okay, it's a goofy bit, but it doesn't bug me like a lot of the stuff in the fourth-wall-breaking thread would. Did I miss a period where it was more prevalent/cutesy? I heard about that Comics Code clothing tag bit... Oh well, I really like She-Hulk; hope they don't go quite that far with the schtick again.
  18. Re: Gestalt Sampler I don't like templates, so the space given over to them is a downside for me. But I've been working on a similar "archetypes supers" concept myself, so I'll almost certainly buy the book - I enjoyed the sample material a lot. I hope that the material was run by an editor/proofreader between the .pdf and the real print run, though - the number of mistakes in the .pdf (missing words or awkward phrasing, more than spelling typos) was noticeable enough to be off-putting.
  19. Re: [Warped Game Ideas (WGI)] Psycho-powers "With great power, comes great incomprehensibility"?
  20. Re: Wand of Fireballs (or the Champions Equivalent) I'd just use Independent, Charges, and Charges Never Recover, and have the "recharging" mage put points into it as if he was making a new one. You can make it easier for him in terms of what he needs to do in-game (he doesn't need the heart of a dragon or 600 GP worth of cornflakes or whatever), but he should still pay the normal amount of permanently-lost character points.
  21. Re: [Character] Glazier Nitpick, without even really reading the write-up (sorry): You might want to spell his name Glacier - a glazier is "one who cuts and fits glass, as for doors and windows".
  22. Re: Malign Hypercognition Disorder (MHD) How about this scenario: a medicated ex-supervillain approaches the heroes with a plan to deliberately, temporarily go off his meds, incarcerated and watched 24-7 by the heroes, with the intent of developing a cure that doesn't reduce his intelligence...
