  2. Re: Name This Hero I'd like Shade Proteus, because like the classical hero he can take different form ( even if always human) and like Batman is part of the night... The name is a little bit too bombastic. Ciao Andrea
  3. Re: [Newbie] Problem with Fixed Slot Multipower Hi, thanks for all the replies ( warn me when I'm becoming annoying with my questions...). MitchellS got it right: the entangled is wrong.. so I'd switch to the 2d6 dice solution. You did enlight me about keeping the armor out of the multipower but the "keep only the attacks in multipower" seems a little bit of a metagaming trick Nevertheless I'd like the rule about having only END costing powers in the framework suggested by gojira ( even if it is an house rule), so I'll stick to this So in the end I'll keep Armor out and everything else inside ( still not sure about clinging...) Thanks a lot.. really Ciao Andrea
  4. Hi again, you suggested me to use multipower for my GLue Hero that I've posted in the Hero Rules area and I did my homework, nevertheless I remained with some open questions... Look at the following example... Multipower Glue Machine 50 Pts Clinging: +9 STR, Real Cost 13 = Cost 1,3 Entangle: 4d6, 20, DEF 4, Are of effect: Cone (+1), Selective (+1/4), OIF (-1/2) Real Cost 30 = Cost 3 Energy Blast: 4d6, Are of effect: Cone (+1), Selective (+1/4), OIF (-1/2), Real Cost 30= 3 Armor 6PD/6ED, OIF (-1/2), Real Cost 12, Cost=1,2 First: Is everything OK from a rules point of view ??? Second ( more philosophical): Since I have to pay full active cost for powers in the Fixed Slot Multipower I will not be able to use Armor together with Entangle.. So when I got a phase I should decide to use Armor or Attack, but this is against logic because my armor is always there ( is part of the armor itself), nevetheless If (and I telling tou if) I understand the rules I cannot have the two powers since Energy Blast + Armor = 57. I know I can raise the Multipower pool but this is a question about the method not much about this specific case... Can you help me ??? Ciao
  5. Re: [Newbie] Is desolidification truly unbalancing ? Thanks to everyone... very Enlightning and useful ( hold breath is a good idea to limit desolidification). Ciao Andrea
  6. Re: [Newbie] My first character Hi, again this post is simply to thanks all the people that had helped me in this character creation. A part from your deep knowledge of the game you are people that likes to lend an hand and this is a great power, even if it not listed in Hero ( or is it Aid ?). Since I'm both the GM and the character creator for my lazy gamer, I'll promise that I'll publish a detailed description of the concept and style of the game, since it seems that some of you were interested. Now I gotta go.. I must learn how to master the Multipower... Ciao
  7. Re: [Newbie] My first character Thanks for all your tips and suggestion, I have still some remarks then I'll promise that I'll be quiet for a whilw On gojira's Comments Mmmh... my campaign is a low powered (more of a Pulp hero) so I kept PD/ ED low, moreover the character has the Armor, should not this kind of defense strenghten his defense enough ? Or I'm misinterpreting the rule ? But Nighthawk ( I think is a Major leaguer) has 20 and seems like a pretty powerful character...Is 18 CON such a major hindrance ? ( I can't afford to pay more) I've got the feeling ( no offense intended) that gojira is a master in the art of MIN/MAX or am I wrong ?? On prestidigitator's Comments You are perfectly right I intended selective because I imagined both the pellets and the ray like a rain of mini darts that can be in some way directed to avoid friend in the cone... Do you think that the concept hold or should I erase the selective.... Thanks to everyone
  8. Hi, I'm starting with my first campaign of Champions and I'd like to have a character with the desolidification, nevertheless in the book is strongly advised to keep in mind the possible implication of this power. SInce I'm not expert I'm asking the "sage" of the forum if this power is so truly umbalancing and if it brings real difficulties for the Master. Thanks PS I will be interested even in discover if exist a way of limiting is "umbalancing" effect.
  9. Re: [Newbie] My first character Ok here's the character fixed up with some of the suggestions I received: CHARACTERISTIC STR 16 DEX 18 CON 15 BODY 17 INT 21 EGO 16 PRE 15 COM 16 PD 6 ED 6 SPD 3 REC 3 END 34 STUN 35 Cost: 97 SKILLS 3 Acrobatics 3 Criminology 3 Defense maneuver ( no behind) 5 Inventor 3 Paramedic 3 Cybernetics 3 Combat skill level (+1DCV e +1OCV) 2 KS: Sweepoos Industries 2 KS: Law 3 Teamwork 3 Tracking 5 Mechanics 5 Skill Levels ( Cyber-Mechanical skills) Cost: 48 POWERS Glue Ray: Entanglement 3d6, Area of Effect: Cone (1) , Selective (1/4) Inaccessible Inobvious Focus (-1/4), Durable 54 Points Glue Glove: Clinging, +6 STR of the Character, Inaccessible Obvious Focus (-1/4) (they are linked to the armor), Durable Cost 10 Rain of Solid Glue Pellets: Energy Blast 4d6, 20'' range, Area of Effect: Cone (1), Selective (+1/4), Inaccessible Obvious Focus (-1/4), Durable Cost: 36 Solid Glue Armor Damage Resistance, 8PD/6ED, Inaccessible Obvious Focus (-1/4), Cost: 17 Total 264 DISADVANTAGES Code vs. killing -10 Secret Identity -15 TOTAL: 239 Is it better ?? at least can be used for a game session or two ??
  10. Re: [Newbie] My first character You have been all very kind and you really helped me to understand some "best practices" that I've still to master completely. Thanks expecially to Dust Raven for the detailed analysis... I'm quite satisfied that I did not make any big mistakes ( a part the IIF that should be OIF) but i completely forgot about defense I'll post the new version of the character this evening ( Greenwich +1 time) so you could see if I've learnt the lesson. Thank for your patience and time. Andrea
  11. Hi, it's the boring newbie again... I'm creating a character for one of my players ( lazy guys) and since it's the first time I'd like to have some check from the wise elders of the site. The concept is a sort of Glue Master ( a gagdgeteer I think) that can use is powersuit to shoot off some power attack. Ah.. the campaign is based on average-low powered super heroes. STR 16 DEX 18 CON 15 BODY 17 INT 22 EGO 16 PRE 15 COM 16 Cost: 80 3 Acrobatics 3 Criminology 3 Defense maneuver ( no behind) 5 Inventor 3 Paramedic 3 Cybernetics 3 Combat skill level (+1DCV e +1OCV) 2 KS: Sweepoos Industries 2 KS: Law 3 Teamwork 3 Tracking 5 Mechanics 5 Skill Levels ( Cyber-Mechanical skills) Cost: 48 Powers: Glue Ray: Entanglement 3d6, Area of Effect: Cone (1) , Selective (1/4) Inaccessible Inobvious Focus (-1/4), Durable 54 Points Glue Glove: Clinging, +6 STR of the Character, Inaccessible Inobvious Focus (-1/4) (they are linked to the armor), Durable Cost 10 Rain of Solid Glue Pellets: Energy Blast 4d6, 20'' range, Selective (+1/4), Inaccessible Inobvious Focus (-1/4), Durable Cost: 36 Total 237 I'm not sure of the Focus definition ( the weapons are part of the suit so the should be inaccessible but I don't know if I'm interpreting rightly the rule) As you may noticed I did not use disadvantages...they remember to much of a trick to get powerful character ( like talents and Flaws in Rolemaster...). I should give them a try ??? Nevertheless any suggestion/ correction is really welcomed. I appreciate you help Andrea
  12. Re: [Newbie] problem figuring out this power Thanks really to everyone you have been very helpful !! Grazie Andrea
  13. Hi, so I've read the rules, pestered people on the board and bought the snack for my first Hero session, I started asking to my players which kind of character do they like to create ( we do creation together becasuse my players rarely read a single rule... they learn by gaming...lazy guys) The first three were very easy ( a Flash here, a Energy beam there..) and It was getting to my head ( Wow I learnt the game !!) Then the last one rises up and says " I want to control trees and flowers". GM: Control what ?? Would'nt you like better a speedster ??? PLAYER: NO I want to control tree !! So I flipped trough the book for a solution but... so far I was not able to get a satisfying solution. Can you help me ? Grazie PS By the way Control Mind does not comprehend Vegetation, I wonder if trees can be considered in the control mind group...
  14. Re: [Newbie] Some help with combat maneuvers Thanks for te replies, really. Now everything is more clear, but a direct "refer" in the text to the Multiple power attack would have been useful Ciao
  15. Re: Early Firearms Hey thanks Captain Obvious very interesting rules idea for my Hornblower Hero pet project.. If only I could learn all the Hero rules...... Ciao
  16. Re: Horror Hero rant Hi, very interesting thread expecially for me that I'm coming to Hero System after almost 15 years of Call of Cthulhu ( just to change a bit not to abandon it). I think that Lovecraft literature is based on the "desperation" that men feel when they realize that there are bigger and deeper things than the one we see. Evil Gods and the general "malevolence" of the universe are central themes of his literature. HPL stated in Call of Cthulhu that the fact that we cannot understand the real fabric of reality is the thing that save us from insanity. This is different from the "casual horror" approach of other Horror ( like the B-Movies or the various teenager horror) where the horror element is just an anomaly in a overall normal contest ( Destroyed the monster everything comes back to normality). In CoC even if the player win there's a sense of having lost their innocence and Sanity loss is just representative of the difficulty to regain a normal and safe view of the world. So it's not much a problem of playing a RPG where you always lose ( it is not so, you just need to be veeeeery careful and sometimes admit that you are overpowered) the problem is playing a RPG where in the long terms wether humans wins or lose is not much of a concern.... Moreover you can mix true Mythos stories with more mundane threat ( Cultist menace or investigative eerie stories) so the PC have the feeling that they can do the difference at least in some level. This is just my idea...what do you think ?? Ciao
  17. Hi, I have some problem in the use of combat maneuvers and maybe someone here can help me. In the table of page 254 the Sweep Maneuver is stated as a 1 Phase action then in the description the rulebook says "Characters may use sweep with most combat maneuvers. For example, a character can sweep Disarm several enemies" But Disarm is a 1/2 phase maneuver, wouldn't in this case the character operate a 1+1/2 phase in a segment ?? A thing that I understand is strictly forbidden from what I read at pag 233 "Full Phase action take character's entire phase; he can do nothing else" At this point I'm quite sure I missed something very important and since I'm a a week away from my first Gm of Hero I don't want to blot a long career as a Master by taking wrong calls in crucial moments Thanks Ciao
  18. Re: How Long to Learn Hero System? Oooh now I've understood. So basically this thread must be titled: How long to Learn that you don't need not Learn the Hero System a sort of Zen-like approach.... Thanks for showing me the light Ciao Andrea
  19. Re: How Long to Learn Hero System? I have just finished reading all the rules and while I agree that the book seems more impressive due to many descriptions ( powers, skills, perks, etc.), nevertheless I have found some difficulties that I'd like to share with the forum. 1) DCV, OCV, etc. It is really difficult to grasp all this "acronimus", expecially if you have never thought to a pistol like a OAF. I photocopied the page with the descriptions and kept handy for reference IWVH ( it was very helpful ) 2) Exposition. Many times things gets more clear while you advance on the reading, but there are moments when the newbie gets really frustrated. I could never figure out some things without the help on the forum, than I discovered that some things were explained some pages later.. I think that a re-read after a first read is necessary ( at least I've found it very useful) 3) Formulas: Sometime the formulas are presented without examples with numbers and this is a little misleanding ( post it with many badly scribbled numbers is crowding my book) 4) Concept: Hero seems to have lenghty descriptions for everything. If I take Rolemaster a gun has some statistics and has a table to determine damage and Critical. All in all very concise. In hero none of this... you have to put powers, advantages and others things...this lead to lenghty description that are not so user friendly for a gamer. I've read an adaptation of Batman for Hero and It was a sort of a algebrical poem... 5) Concept: Hero is really powerful and has an innovative approach. You don't think in terms of things but in terms of "use" and "qualities" of the things in themselves. A sort of Kantian revolution applied to RPGs !! A knife is an OAF ( if a remeber well), who does some damages, has some durability, can be thrown, etc.. but a part for the body points and aerodinamics the description could be appliable even to a broken bottle. This is very clever but since it is different from other RPG can be difficult at the beginning.. All in all I love this system, good design and infinite possibilities. I hope that I will grasp all its power in short time !!
  20. Re: Inspirational Reading Not a big fan of the genre but I'd like to give my suggestion: 1) Dashiel Hammet: The Red Harvest. Ok not techno...but a marvelous gritty book about betrayal and courage 2) Tim Powers: Declare If you like the idea to mix Follet, Clancy and Lovecraf this is your book, definitely !! 3) Alistair McLean Any book by this master ( except the one set in WWII) make a fantastic read about spies and larger than life threats. Maybe with a bit of retrò feeling ( ahh those beautiful cold war days...) I'll try to find something else...
  21. Re: (Newbie) Problems with Damage Classes Well thanks for your help. Everhting is more clear now. Andrea
  22. Hi, It's me again with a silly question... Can someone provide an example (easy) of how a DCs change by using an advantages ( for example armor piercing). It is explained in the book but I did not understand it. I understood the doubling of DCs rules, the movement related bonus but I can't figure out the math/description of the advantages related issue ( if I remember there's an example in the book with a 1d6 HKA Knife). I re-read the chapter three times but It must be my English ( or worst my IQ ) Thanks really for your precious time..if you ever need a help for Rolemaster....
  23. Re: (Newbie) Vehicles combat/ creation Thank you very much to all of you !! I was interested in a 74 guns with square sail ( about 1780-1816), or in a frigate 36 guns. But thank you for the gaming description of the McGregor... It seems to me that building that game statistic will not be very easy. Thanks again. Andrea
  24. I told im my presentation post that I would ask may questions ... So here I am. My doubts at the moment are about which is the right book to start with for all vehicle related matters. I need some Sailing Vessel examples and a more detailed description of Vehicles combat that the one presented in the core book ( if it exists). Sorry about the question but I still need to understand well all the different books and where to find the right things. Grazie/Thank you Andrea
  25. Re: Hooray for Newbies! why are you suddenly here? Nooooo really!!!!
