  1. Re: A REAL reboot of the JL Very nice. I kinda like Superman as something of a "working-class hero". The Batman reimagining makes him look like Ras-Algul's little brother or son. http://dresdencodak.tumblr.com/post/7811124435/if-dc-ever-paid-me-to-do-a-batman-story-it-would
  2. Re: Sentients native to low-gravity worlds operating on "normal" gravity worlds? With Necessity being that grand and demanding Matron that she is, it wouldn't be very long until somebody would figure out something. I would think a likely invention would be an exoskeleton to help negate (relative) heavy gravity. Depending on the tech level, this could be extremely bulky with a short battery life, (maybe even tethered to an external power source), to some kind of jumpsuit or even device that reduces gravity's grip. An interesting side-effect to this would be that the low-grav people would become pretty strong (for their species anyways) and build up some good endurance by virtue of it being weight training with every step they take in the higher gravity.
  3. Re: Trek HERO Netbook? Heh... It's also one of the most frustrating according to the guy who had to edit it (Ken Burnside) To be fair, the SFU was well established before The Next Generation even came out. It completely ignores the movies as well and went it's own way. I rather like how they did it. It's even more amusing when the fiction peripherally refer to the exploits of everyone's favorite Heavy Cruiser.
  4. Re: Trek HERO Netbook? ADB says they're producing a Prime Directive Hero. It's somewhere on the production list under "Whenever the author gives us the manuscript " along with several other systems. This is both good and bad, in my opinion. It gets the background spread out to wide variety systems, (therefore audiences), but it does slow down production of supplements for the background.
  5. Re: Theme Park Worlds Hmm... Bioroids with wifi link-ups? Sounds ripe for coercion. Several flavors of Terrorists come to mind, Criminal concerns, even "The main AI's gone insane, just when the Senior Class of St.Bill Jobs Prep started their Grad Night in *capital city of the Fantasy Planet*. Oh, Damn..." Could even put a little Jurassic Park twist on it, "We don't know how it happened, Chief, but the bioroids gained self-awareness. Even more troubling is that they have started to use the links as a from of telepathy." "Is that all?" "I'm afraid not, Chief. The Bioroids have started to breed..." Mini-arc blockbuster of the summer.
  6. Re: A galaxy of humans If I remember history correctly, Birth-rates skyrocket when there's a need for it or the community in question doesn't have other diversions. Where a new colony was concerned, couples try to, well, pump out, as many children as they can. This was due to a combination of needing extra (non-paid) hands to work the fields as well as a high mortality rate in children and adults. It's been speculated that this is one of the larger factors as to why slavery took root big time in the Americas when it was going out of fashion in Europe. For Colonies on other planets, one can reasonably expect that the colonists will have plenty of labor-saving devices, (tractors, if nothing else), as well as modern medicine, so birth-rates wouldn't be as great. They'd still increase with all that extra room on a new planet, but not as fast.
  7. Re: Gothic science fiction settings Well, there's also Traveler and it's Post-Crash era, (The Virus that crippled nearly everything in known space and caused a lot of ships to go on automatic and attack everything around them IIRC). It lasted around 70 years and paved the way for T:NE. But what if it lasted longer?
  8. Re: Historical Late Medieval Period RPG Other than suggesting a trip to your local library for books on the subject, I got nothing.
  9. Re: Religions in SF settings. Religious Orders know they will have to evolve and change to keep up with the times, but things of that nature causes major divides. In SF, this is usually represented the group that lost the 'argument' takes off for deep space to find a world where they can practice their belief without persecution. Sometimes it's the reformists that leave, sometimes it's the orthodoxy. What happens then is left to the imagination of the author. Hmm... (slightly off-topic) this gives me an interesting idea about cultural exchanges between races. If the US Chaplain's Corps is still alive and well a few centuries down the road, one of their number would be a good representative as they are trained in many different religious rites in addition to their own. So they'd be more open sharing of info with alien clerics.
  10. Re: Your favorite SF gear. That's easy. My favorite piece of gear in a SF setting will always be.... the multi-tool. It cuts, it grips, it screws, it unscrews, it welds, and has the one thing that is of the up most importance to anyone out in space or unknown worlds, a can opener.
  11. Re: Fantasy locations that should be real A fully refurbished Victorian going for less than $200K in San Francisco (Ba-bum-dum) How about the Emerald City in the Land of OZ? (the books, not the movies), Sounds like an interesting place to visit.
  12. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone Read by Jim Dale 'cause sometimes you just need to let your kid-at-heart out.
  13. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Lawrence of Arabia Movie soundtrack on XM. Last night it was the Winning game of the World Series. GO GIANTS!
