  2. Re: NASA: Patron of Hard Sci-Fi? Getting young people interested in space exploration is necessary if they is to be any actual space exploration. I'm not say that you are bunch of grumpy old men who are bitter because space exploration has largely passed our generation by. Oh, what the heck, yes I am. There is no down side to this announcement except that it is too late for us.
  3. Re: Repercussions of mass-producing comic book technology Just this one. With a light enough power source, all the other technology needed to make jetpacks already exist. They might not be able to nearly pass the Turing Test but your batteries would lead to a revolution in robotics. Powerful, lightweight batteries would allow for more powerful and versatile prosthetic limbs. Powered armor. Electric cars would virtually replace combustion vehicles within a decade. Electric personal airplanes are now available. Your communication device with the the 100 mile sending radius falls under cascade of technology that would reasonably develop based off your super battery. Portable gaming equipment with GPS systems and powered by your super battery turns the whole world into your game. Imagine a group of gamers coming together in Grand Central station to battle a dragon that they can see their headsets but doesn't otherwise exist. Tons of other stuff that comes about as the new super battery driven technology rubs against each produces synergy tech.
  4. Re: NASA: Patron of Hard Sci-Fi? That sounds great. I wonder how long we have to wait before we get some books out of this deal.
  5. Re: "British Only": How much of a Limitation? But we like talking about blonds..
  6. Re: "British Only": How much of a Limitation? There may be an easier way to do it, but you can build it in parts. X number of dice for any British blood at all, + Y more dice if they are at least 1/4 British, +Z more dice if they are actual Brits.
  7. Re: "British Only": How much of a Limitation? Using another power that you had to pay full price for IMHO is not an easy way bypass a limitation. Now you are having to buy two powers at full and nearly full price to do what you could have done with a single power without the limitation. Do you think that a character with flight at regular END cost and Teleportation at 5X END should not get the normal limitation value for for the Increased Endurance Cost because he can just get around it by flying?
  8. Re: "British Only": How much of a Limitation? Why? A nerfed power is a nerfed power. Why should the character get fewer points for the nerfing just because they can still function? The guidelines for Limited Powers talk about how much the the limitation reduces the effectiveness of the power, not the character.
  9. Re: Underbelly: Razor - source material from Australia Good stuff. I had no trouble watching it despite not living in Australia. Not the same level as Boardwalk Empire but lots of good source source material for a 1920 games whether set in Australia or not.
  10. Re: Questions about the Champions 6E core rules book I'm sorry that you were disappointed by your purchase. Will the game store that you bought it from allow you to return it? If this experience has not completely burned you on the system, rather than buy two expensive books you can get the "HERO Systme Basic Rulebook" for $20 or as a $15 PDF file.
  11. Re: Conan: The Current Movie in Progress..... Yes, Ebert is getting crotchety in his old age. Also, he is mentally slipping which is really sad. In several reviews of his that I have read recently, he missed major plot points of the movies and this was reflected in his reviews of them. He blamed characters for making actions without purpose when there were perfectly good in movie justifications for their actions.
  12. Re: Champions Universe Groups In Japan. According to Champions Worldwide Japan has 4 superteams . The only team that it names is the Tokyo Super Squad with members Tō ("Tower", a powered armor guy), Kiko ("Chrysanthemum", a mystic martial artist), Fidobakku (Feedback", sonic energy projector) and Kōdōtai ("Zodiac Man", a shapechanger). These heroes are named but no write-ups are given Champions Worldwide does give write-ups Charm Girl (a flying brick superhero), Shonen No Kufu ("Gadget Boy", gadgeteer superhero), Tetsuronin (powered armor superhero), Kazan ("Volcano", rock/earth controlling supervillain), and Tetsuryu ("Iron Dragon", powered armor wearing supervillain).

  15. Re: Starfish Alien Find out how much an analogous creature weighs (say a giant squid), factor for the greater size of your critter, and use that as your weight. Remember that weight is based on the cube of size. So if your creature is twice the size of the one that you are comparing it to it will weigh 8 times as much. As for how fast they can swim, you might want to base that on the speed of their favorite prey or the creature that hunts them. For example, if they like to hunt a killer whale analog it would help if they could swim 30 mph. The ammonium chloride solution may be lighter than seawater but some parts of their bodies aren't going to be. Consequently they won't just float on top of the water. However the buoyancy of the ammonium chloride solution would prevent them from sinking all the way to the bottom and keep them in the general depth range that they prefer without them have to expend effort to stay there. Their appendage sound like they would give them the necessary dexterity to use a wide of tools and weapons. The real limiting factor would probably be their brains. It is worth noting that social creatures tend to be smarter than loners. So if they were naturally pack hunter they would have a leg (tentacle) up in evolving tool use. Are there spell casters in this campaign that would make it necessary to worry about them having there shape changed? Not particularly. They do sound large and dangerous though. Why? Why do they have three eyes and five mouths? Why do multiple tongues? What is the purpose of the suckers lined with teeth and barbed claws? How do all of these features aid these creatures in their natural habitat? It not important that you tell me the answer to these questions, but it is important that you know. Otherwise, you are not creating an alien, you are just creating some fantasy monster.

    Alien

Re: Alien I would recommend tossing out the term humanoid since so many of its features are non-humanoid; perhaps bipedal would be a better word. Also, why are you referring to it as a "he"? Were the players informed that they were being introduced to a male? I don't know how you were planning on presenting this alien to the players, but unless they are initially encountering it when it is laying on an autopsy table, I would suggest giving the description gradually. First just tell them those things are most noticeable such as maybe the eyes, color, size and arm tentacles. Then are the players have more time to observe the alien add extra details like the chitinous plates, tentacle tongues, the suckers, etc. Each time that the players decide that it can't get more disgusting add a new detail. Don't forget that it will probably have a smell, character sounds and its own body language. Advice aside, your alien sounds extremely alien. Congratulation. I'm sure that your players will find it very disturbing.
  17. Re: Rise of the Planet of the Apes I saw the movie and while I'm not as apes about it as Rex (sorry, couldn't help myself), I did enjoy myself and would recommend it as a matinee. My main problem with it is that IMHO it did a poor job fleshing out the human. Heck twenty minutes after leaving the theater I had to struggle remember the name of the human protagonist. On the positive side, Andy Serkis did a great job playing Ceasar, the special effects and stunts were good, and it is great game fodder. How long post RotPotA were you thinking of setting your game? Balance will be tricky, but if you carefully limit the equipment and skills available to the apes, you might be able to work something half way fair out.
  18. Re: Would a spell of Growth cause your equipment to grow too? I'm going to agree with CC on this. Their armor would grow but it would only provide the same protection that it did before. Their sword would become longer and have more rech, but if it was a 1 1/2 d6 HKA it would remain a 1 1/2 d6 HKA. However, you could link extra damage and/or armor to the spell to give a more powerful giant.
  19. Re: Mars Colony? As the wise man said, "This too shall pass."
  20. Re: Need Plot help for Urban Fantasy game! Well, let's see. We know or at least have strong reason to suspect that the victims are people that CROW can't control directly, otherwise he simply would have had them cause their own deaths. So maybe the victims are all part of some mystical society that opposes CROW in his or her long range goals. Maybe CROW is seeking to become King of Queen of the Faerie Court (or such) and the victims are all Guardians of the Court. As for who the players are, I like the idea of them all being people who were destined to die but were rescued by CROW because there should be dead status makes them blank spots in attempts to scry. CROW knew that the Guardians of the Court had a number of talented seers that might might sense his or her plot if blank destinies were not used in the assassinations.
  21. Re: Star Hero 6th Edition: my first take Hero is a toolbox, and it tries to be a well stocked one at that. Perhaps it should have said in bold letters at the beginning of the spaceship chapter, "If you do not plan to have ship to ship combat in your game, skip this chapter!" As someone who also isn't crazy about Hero vehicles I'm not being completely facetious. However, since it says at the front of the book that all Hero rules are optional, I can understand why they would not feel it was necessary to do so at the start of individual chapters. I have seen pretty elaborate vehicle write-ups on this board which leads me to believe that some Hero gamers enjoy doing them. Even if Hero is primarily an RPG rather a vehicle combat game, I don't think that Steve Long and company can be faulted for including detailed vehicle creation rules. After all some players like them.
  22. Re: Mars Colony? But there are reasons of patriotism and national identity to undertake this. It is important for people to have goals and it turns out that it is important for nations to have goals too. Without goals the tendency is is to spend too much time just watching TV or messing around on the internet and it is neither healthy or productive. In recent years I have become convinced that one of America's biggest problems is that we as a nation lack purpose. Maybe I'm missing the forest for the trees, but I see a nation lost in celebrity gossip and reality TV shows. Our children need something to dream of besides landing a spot on Jersey Shore. Conquest of space is not the only possible goal for which the US could strive, but IMHO it is one of the better ones.
  23. Re: "The Mercury Men" -- Trailer For Upcoming Webseries The first nine episodes are available on Hulu now, and with each of them lasting about about 7 minutes, together they comprise the first story of the series. It's a very well told story. Each episode is structured like the Republic movie serials with each episode ending in either cliffhanger of at a dramatic junction in the story. Even in those moments of the episodes where not much is happening, you want to go on watching because you know that something exciting is about to happen. However, while the style is impeccable the substance (like the serials that it patterns itself after) is pretty light weight. Still, its got a satisfying ending and I recommend checking it out.
