VPs tend to also run for Pres later.  So if a VP is given the right to overturn an election, what's to stop a party from maintaining their President for two terms using the VP as a spoiler, then having the VP run and act as a spoiler for their own election, assigning a VP from their party, and doing it again?  Forever?

Well, obviously, they totally could have if they were geniuses like Trump.  They just weren't smart enough. /s

I am still with my long-term gaming group of mumble mumble years.  I've switched jobs and travel quite a bit, so I sometimes cannot attend the sessions, but I do when I can and enjoy it muchly.  The current campaign is golden age; I am playing a speedster named DoubleTime! (the exclamation point is in his name).  I've had a lot of fun running him.

I see what you did there.

Let's not give this greater social significance than it deserves. This is DeSantis and his allies trying to provoke the culture war, because he thinks that's his path to the White House. It hasn't come about because of any popular sentiment among Floridians.

The fact that this might be a viable path to the White House is quite disturbing enough.  Thank you.

No cause of death has been given yet, and he had multiple health problems.  So, his anti-vaxxer status may not have anything to do with his demise.

I didn't see the second Squad movie. A friend told me about it and team 1's deaths. I was like you know Mongal is invulnerable and Javelin is basically a Green Arrow with spears. He was like I didn't know that, but it goes with the fact that one of the Squad could call the enemy and let them know what was happening from inside the prison

    CES

Well, yes, they nerfed Mongal considerably from the comic version of her.  However, since the DCU is explicitly a different universe than Prime Earth, I don't see that as cheating.  The same goes for Javelin thought I am not sure that Green Arrow would have made it through that if you stripped away his plot armor.

Actually, there is a thriving market in burner phones in American prisons.  They are small, easy to smuggle and there is always some guard who is willing to accept bribes.  Heck, at a place like Belle Reve, probably most of the guards would be open to accepting bribes.  Though in this case that doesn't really matter, since Amanda Waller obviously wanted to create a distraction for team #2 and to do some house cleaning while she was at it by getting rid of all the members of the team who disobeyed her in the last movie.  So, even if Belle Reve was normally good about keeping its prisoners from have cell phones, an exception would have been made in this case.

Bloodsport's bally artillery can't make a dent in Starro, including an eye that's a target as big as a baseball diamond; but Harley's little spear tears right through the eye?

I'm willing to suspend my disbelief, but not hang it by the neck until dead.

Javelin seemed to think that the spear was a big deal, and just because we never really got to see him us it does not mean that he was wrong.

I wouldn't mind seeing someone do a John Sable Freelance or Grimjack series.

The Russo brothers announced that they had acquired the rights to do a Grimjack movie back in 2019, and in 2020 reasserted their intention to make one (link).  However, they haven't mentioned it since then.

Ever since I first heard about the announcement, I have been assuming that the plan was to get Keanu Reeves to play Grimjack, because, well, d'uh.  So, I am wondering if they were unable to get him or maybe he said yes but they have to wait until he finishes other projects.  That is of course just complete speculation on my part.

Maybe the CIA can assist and pick up any slack. They know where everyone lives and whether they are naughty or nice, right?

I think that is the NSA, but since the CIA has better name recognition you  might want to use them instead.

A number of years back, I asked some of my coworkers to name as many Supreme Court justices as they could.  Most of them could not name even one.

A firearm is not a "tool"; a firearm is a weapon. There's another problem: casual rebranding that steadily blunted the seriousness of the matter.

    8 hours ago, Tom said:

Weapons are a subset of tools.  It's not much of a stretch since not everyone uses firearms as a weapon.

Yes, and tools are a subset of objects, and objects are a subset of stuff.  Put it that way, people should be free to carry guns, knives and explosives into schools, places of worship and courthouses.  After all, people routinely carry stuff into all those places.  😏

This logical fallacy is called the Fallacy of Division.  It can be easily avoided by calling things what they are and not that of which they are a subset.  So call them firearms, or if you want to include knives and bombs in the discussion use the term weapons.  However, unless this is a discussion about anthropology there aren't going to be many situations that it broadening things to the point of calling firearms tools adds anything good to the discussion.

At a Nascar event, apparently a large chunk of the crowd began to chant "F***K Joe Biden". A reporter there either thought they were actually praising the winner (Who was named Brandon) or tried to cover it up a bit for the censors. I suspect the former, at least at first. She claimed they were chanting "Let's Go, Brandon!"

So some on the right felt it was a good way to mock the mainstream media AND say '@### Joe Biden' in code, and thus it caught on.

Well, taking a glass half full view of it, a guy who lives down the street from me had a "F*** Joe Biden!" flag and has changed it for a "Let's Go, Brandon!" flag, and I consider it a definite improvement.  This is particularly true since the guy's house is across the street from the playground of a public park, and I don't think the parent's of the kids that played there appreciated having to explain to their children why that word that they aren't allowed to say was on a flag next to the president's name.

Yep, some people are real classy.

Wyoming GOP votes to no longer recognize Rep. Liz Cheney as a Republican

The 31-29 vote Saturday in Buffalo, Wyoming, by the state party central committee followed votes by local GOP officials in about one-third of Wyoming’s 23 counties to no longer recognize Cheney as a Republican.

Do they? It doesn't quite sound like they do, at least not from how I'm hearing the movie described.

Without change there is no "arc" (the arc metaphor represents a trajectory of change in the character due to the events of the story; the arc is not the story itself). If there is no obvious change for viewers to observe and be moved by, then the characters don't really have an arc; they have no meaningful development (in a conventional dramatic sense). I think screenwriters these days lack a strong grasp of character development, and try to be too subtle and nuanced with their characters. They mistake "naturalistic" portrayals with character development. Developing a character is not the process of slowly revealing a character's beliefs, traumas, and driving forces. It is the process of changing those beliefs and driving forces as a consequence of the drama they get caught up in. In Star Wars (ANH), Han Solo has a character arc. Obi-Wan Kenobi does not. Luke Skywalker has a character arc. Princess Leia does not. Darth Vader does not get a character arc until RotJ.

Setting aside the superficial stuff and embracing ones essential core is a change even if the core was secretly there all along.

Out of curiosity, and without giving away any spoilers, which characters in Eternals went through substantial changes (of character) over the course of the movie?

That is a hard question.  The characters are asked to make some very tough moral choices and they are all affected by them. But there is the question of which ones are changed by the choices and which just have there true character revealed.

Sprite, Sersi, Thena, Ikaris, Druig, and Kingo all have have interesting arcs.  However, which are changed versus which are revealed I couldn't say.

  15. I saw Eternals today.  Given the clunky nature of the comic book source material, IMHO this is the best adaption that could have been make.  It takes the source material seriously and never plays it for camp.  The actors are all very good, though given the large cast some characters get bet fleshed out than other.  There is humor but never at inappropriate times.  The stakes are huge both for the world and the characters personally and they give them the the weight that they are due.

Viewers who go in looking for another MCU action comedy are going to be disappointed.  But viewers who like comic books and don't feel a need to wink wink nudge nudge the story may enjoy Eternals.
