Today I finished a quirky little book called Quiet, Please: Dispatches from a Public Librarian by Scott Douglas. The stories were originally published in a blog format, and I'm glad he was able to get away with it. It filled me nostalgia and dread. I'm reminded of why I got into this field, and why I ran away screaming.

I'm not sure how widespread the appeal is, honestly. Some of it seemed to be written for other professionals, but it should still be largely accessible. If you've ever wondered what really goes on behind the reference desk, give it a look. It's a pretty fast read, and the e-book was free.

Ran across this on a photography site, not photo-shopping, just a great shot!

I just read the Apocalypse Troll by David Weber. After being put to sleep by the Shiva Option by the same author, I was taking a chance. But I liked it. It was a heroic adventure that concentrated mostly on the two main characters rather than a theater-level strategic analysis like Shiva.

Empire from the Ashes. Compilation of David Weber's Armageddon Inheritance trilogy.

I enjoyed it quite a bit.

It put me into a "want to read more sci-fi" mood.

Thinking about Game of Thrones is bad for me because I'm waiting waiting waiting for the next book. Finish writing it you evil bastard!!!

Honor Harrington: Field of Dishonor by David Weber. It's the fourth Honor Harrington novel, sort of military space opera with a female Horatio Hornblower. This fourth book was rather odd, because it doesn't feature a single space battle - the whole thing deals with the aftermath of the previous book and Honor's conflict with another officer. Prettty interesting, though I won't pick up the next book for a couple weeks or thereabouts.

Amazing characterizations. Nice plot, with a few unexpected turns, which is nice. The story is fine, but the characters are totally engrossing, which is what i love.

All of this was foreshadowed. I thought it was obvious that Pitt could control time since it shows up before those two events, and is the reason the guy in the armor wants him dead. The 5 minute event starts breaking down the masqurade for the rest of the world.
