Just got back, put me in the crowd that liked the movie. I thought Brie pulled off pretty well a person who, for 6 years with only vague flashing memories, has had her mind messed with and been repeatedly told to harness her emotions. I took the few jokes and emotional outbursts as her subconscious fighting back. I thought her interactions with Fury were great. I agree that Skrulls weren't without sin. Loved the shoutout to Photon.

How dare you try and bring reality into the internet rantings. Sheesh, next time you will be asking people to calm down and actually discuss things.

lemming reacted to Lord Liaden in Early editions: House rules?
Self-Inflicted Damage: This is a rule I adapted from the original (pre-4th Ed.) HERO sourcebook, The Golden Age of Champions. As it stands now the HERO rules make no provision for someone striking a hard, unyielding object with a part of their bodies and injuring themselves, like punching a stone wall, which would often occur in real life. Strictly by the rules as currently written, a human being could eventually beat a car into scrap with his bare hand. This rule is intended to create a more realistic situation for people who prefer that in their games.
Whenever a character strikes a "soft" target without Resistant Defense, like normal human flesh, he never takes damage from the attack himself. When a character strikes an object with Resistant Defense (which most inanimate objects have, and even some characters such as those wearing armor), he may suffer STUN and BODY damage up to the maximum rolled for the attack. The character's own applicable Defenses would reduce this damage. If using the optional Hit Location rules, the damage can be modified by the multipliers for the Hit Location of the body part you used to strike with.
If the Body damage the character rolls is higher than the Resistant Defense of the object, and enough to destroy all of its remaining BODY after subtracting its DEF, or do Knockdown or Knockback to the target, the character suffers no damage from the attack himself. If the character rolls more BODY Damage than the Resistant DEF of the target, but not enough to destroy all its remaining BODY, and does no Knockdown or Knockback, he takes half the damage from the attack, reduced by his total applicable DEF. If the character doesn't roll more BODY Damage than the Resistant Defense, and does no Knockdown or Knockback, he suffers the full damage himself, minus his total applicable Defense.
This is a useful rule to explain how trained martial artists can break boards, concrete blocks etc. without breaking their hands, feet etc. It can also work as a weapon-breaker, with the damage being inflicted to the weapon a character strikes with, or a weapon used to block an incoming blow, instead of his own body. It works for any object with Resistant Defenses, without the need to stat out a Damage Shield for every wall. It could also apply to that classic scenario of a normal person striking a superhuman with "skin of steel" and injuring his hand. As an optional rule for "normals" as opposed to supers, it helps distinguish the two in a superheroic campaign.

Keep in mind that the CU tries to include every well-known comics trope and element, even if they fall apart the moment you apply any critical intelligence to them. Like, alien invasions are a thing in comics, so the CU has alien invasions. And as you say, these would be a Big Deal that changed how people viewed the world -- except it hasn't, because comic books do try to keep the wider world looking familiar to the readers of their time.
But it's all there ready to use, whether your thing is alien invasions, persecuted mutants, super-powered hidden races, or what-have-you.
Beyond that... You accept the tropes, or you don't. I'm more okay with them than I used to be, because I no longer regard the real world as 'realistic.'
I still have problems with one trope, though: Supers having existed since World War Two. In the comics, it's because they've been published so long and have tried to backfill and tie in everything the company ever published. But the longer you have supers exist, the harder I find it to sustain the acceptance that the wider world still looks just like ours. It's why in my own setting supers first appeared in public in 2000. The consequences are still working themselves out.
(Just as importantly, PCs can be the first to do things, like be the first to fight an alien invasion. In the Marvel or DC Universes -- or the CU -- you're the 5th, or 50th, to fight an alien invasion. Whoop-de-do.)
As one of the CU creators (I designed a bunch of the mystical stuff), I say: It's all done as a resource for you. Pick what you want, ignore the rest, rework it to suit your tastes, we're fine with it!

Saw the film yesterday. I enjoyed it, though parts of the story didn't make as much sense after thinking about it.
I didn't see Larson's acting as wooden; She was playing someone who was having her emotions tamped down for the last six years.
In my own rankings, it's a solid in the middle of the pack of films for the MCU.

lemming reacted to Starlord in Captain Marvel with spoilers
As far as the fights at the end, the way I read it was that she didn't get full control over her powers until she was blown out of the ship and was plumetting to Earth. Inside the ship, she was starting to figure out her abilities. There was more than one occasion where she was surprised and he even injured herself because of her awkwardness. However, when she was falling she seems to have this moment of focus where she finally learns to go 'binary'.
Now as far as MCU space travel goes, this movie did seem to muddle the waters even more. I've also been confused by how it works. I don't mind when Sci-Fi gets wacky and I don't mind pseudo-science and it's accompany techno-babble, but I do want consistency, darnit!

Sirrah, that role hath fellen on me to-day, methinks. Uh, prithee, n'uncle.
Just got home from the premiere screening. The story was nothing to write home about, but the set-pieces were fun, the acting solid, and the chemistry between Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson sparkled. The effects were all there, and SLJ youthified was outstanding. All in all, pretty entertaining -- I give it four Ls outta five.
The period music was top notch, too.

I give you permission to skip tomorrow’s shower. I mean, look at Starlord, he hasn’t washed his armpits in so long he has Sarlaccs living in there.

Looks like one of the beasties from Stranger Things in the lower right, though possibly it's what ST referenced?
Looks like this might be a link to the original, plus other like: https://hcgart.com/

lemming reacted to Cygnia in Today's Dumb Criminal Story ...
This happened during our last performance.
I'm one of the detectives (Actually, I'm the head detective of the CLE franchise) and we have this bit where we ask one of the audience members to reenact the crime for us. Unbeknownst to us at the time, the guy we picked was a bit of a [BLEEP] and probably drunk to boot. He gave himself a problematic name -- and he's proud of it. Usually if that's the case, the supervisor recommends we make them say their name and put the onus on them.
But this twit really likes how uncomfortable his name sounds. Unfortunately for him, I'm a rapid-fire improviser.
Him: I'm Testicle Steve! Know why they call me 'Testicle Steve'?!
Me: 'Cause you're lacking the balls to use your real name?
*mic drop* And the crowd goes wild...

It's a bit different to work with, but GIMP has been my photoshop for many years. (I was surprised a couple years ago finding out how easy it was to switch between using the two, which was much harder back in the 90s)

Thanks for the heads-up, Lemming.
Just popped in to retract my suggestion of Belgium all around.
The seller actually contacted _me_ before i could cypher out how to contact him.
He discovered the mistake, said he will ship the correct item, and to simply keep the wrong item.
I'm going to mail it back to from whence it came; I don't want what I didn't pay for.

Went to the Multnomah Library sale and picked up 23 CDs for 50 cents each. Some that I didn't have and some replaced some stolen CDs that I never ripped. Though I need to start bringing my wanted list with me. (picked up a couple I already had...)

That sounds more like Runequest than Rolemaster. Rolemaster was level based and gave skill points at each level.
