  1. Re: Thrilling Hero Adventures Well darn. I thought this was a new product. The upside is that I can save myself some money as I've already bought these adventures on their own. The downside is that I was really looking forward to something new for Pulp. I guess it really is dead as far as Hero is concerned.
  2. Re: [Characters] The Rocket Gang Yes. Is it possible to UN-rep you?
  3. Re: HISTORY CHANNEL ROCKS for plot seeds Al Hazred. Germany has a much shorter history than the United States does. Germany only came into existence in 1871.
  4. Re: Pulp Hero HC cost Thanks, Squirrel.
  5. Hello folks. What was the price on the Pulp Hero hardcover? Thanks.
  6. Re: Doc Savage Writeup?? That has already been mentioned in this thread, Meta, so yes. The gadgets are all represented by a hefty gadget pool (VPP).
  7. Re: Great Vehicle resource Both vehicles are in the book, St. Barbara. Very few US vehicles of the day made it into the book. Just a quick list to whet your appetite. There are Alfa Romeos, Amilcar, Aston Martins, Auburns, Austin, Bentleys, BMWs, and Bugattis and that's only in the first 50 pages. Information included for each car is as follows. Engine type, construction, valve gear, bore and stroke, displacement, compression ratio, induction system, maximum power, maximum torque, top speed, and 0-60 mph time. Also informs us of the transmission type, what the body/chassis was made of, any special features, the running gear (steeting, front suspension, rear suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires). Lastly, it covers the dimensions (length, width, height, wheelbase, track, and weight). Order the book.
  8. Re: New Campaign Idea Yes, Clyde was the specific individual I was thinking of. Just because someone CAN have something in a game, doesn't mean that they should. Especially one's players. I've found that letting a single gun-toting maniac have access to something like a BAR throws the whole game out of whack. They are generally 4 speed where the usual thug is 2. They are generally 18 dex where the usual thug is 11. They often have multiple levels. So what do you do, throw a US Army company's worth of thugs at them? That's unrealistic and frankly, stupid. Now if you want the bad guys to have a BAR, cool. That takes a slightly hopped up thug (Say 13 dex, 3 spd) and makes him a serious problem for your PCs.
  9. Re: New Campaign Idea This is basically a Shadow or Avenger or Spider campaign played either with or without minor paranormal powers. The BAR might be more than you want to allow any PC to have. Remember, the thing is a LMG not a SMG. Basically, it will blow through both sides of a car and the squishy bits inbetween.
  10. Re: Great Vehicle resource Yes Edsel, it does. Top speed as well as 0-60mph times. Gives other statistics as well. Worth the $20 and then some as far as I am concerned. Nice hardcover book, too.
  11. Hi folks, I picked up a great resource today at Barnes and Noble that you all might be interested in. The book is titled Vintage Cars and it is part of the Five-View series from Motorbooks. The editor is Craig Cheetham and it pretty much covers the 20s and 30s with the odd 40s car thrown in for good measure. The ISBN is 0-7603-2307-0. Enjoy.
  12. Re: Spongebob Hero !!! I think we have to hurt you now...
  13. No Assault, I am not kidding. Lovecraft is horror and not what I would really call pulp. He's in the right era but he has far more in common with Poe than Burroughs. Pulp had Spicy Stories. Romance is a different animal entirely. I will grant you the hard-boiled detective. I will raise you the cowboy tales, the air ace tales, the lost world tales, the mysterious crime fighter tales, the great white hunter tales, the king of the jungle tales, and space opera which is wholly pulp. All of those rest firmly on the heroic. I've been reading pulp for twenty-five years thanks to a great uncle who had tons of Burroughs and Dent. I picked up Gibson shortly after that. My first fiction was pulp because I enjoyed reading it so much. I realized early on that I couldn't sell it because the glory days of that style were long gone. I moved on to SF, Space Opera primarily, because it still carries those tropes. I am firmly in the corner of the heroic tale and pulp is, for the very great majority, heroic in nature.
  14. I'm not so certain that Westerns as pulp have survived unscathed. Pulp really is about the Hero and his opportunities to be heroic. Much of today's Westerns are about the anti-hero who comes through town as force of nature killing all the bad guys just because but not really redeeming himself or acting heroic. These are perfectly good stories and I enjoy them greatly, but to me they are just not pulp. So that means drop any Sergio Leone film, Pale Rider, Unforgiven etc. Great stories all but not pulp. Quigley Down Under, on the other hand, is about the quintessential pulp cowboy. Quigley is a Hero, capital H, with a shining smile and a "howdy ma'am" and instead of blazing six-shooters, a really REALLY big gun ;>.
  15. Sure we have, Michael. Why do you think the Beagle isn't talking?
  16. >>>>The last good pulp movie I saw was Disney's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire. You don't consider the Mummy movies to be pulp? Or you don't consider them to be good? Or is it that you haven't seen them as yet? I'm very big on pulp stories. I've been running a pulp game for the past two years now. Atlantis, The Mummy movies, the Indy Trilogy all live on my shelf in DVD. Rocketeer, Phantom, and Shadow are all waiting in the wings for me to pick up cash. I own Big Trouble in Little China but don't consider it pulp. It's a very direct pastiche of HK action films which may have been influenced by pulp but are more influenced by Asian mythology.
  17. >>for delivering a tool for the Mac users in the Hero audience. We are legion.<< That's about right. There are roughly 800 of you left in existence
  18. New Millenium was an abomination that needs to be scourged from the Earth! That said, do whatever you want, GenreFiend. It's not a bad idea, just not one that really speaks to me.
  19. Think back a couple years ago when we had multiple fires across the west (we had what, four here in Utah, several in California, Idaho, Montana, and five or so in Arizona). We were putting several hundred firefighters on the bigger blazes. Smaller blazes got smaller crews. As I recall a couple governors called out National Guard units. That's one of the things they are there for. To be used for extra firefighting or police in the event of disasters. I don't know a specific number of firefighters available but I am pretty certain that Leavitt called out some Guard and that AZ did too.
  20. No no no no no. Not French. Not Belgian. Luxembourg. Lichtenstein. Malta. Monaco. These are the tiny little countries that should spawn the next megalomaniacal jumped up little superpowered napoleon
  21. Thanks Jim. Much appreciated. Got my copy of Places of Mystery in. A nice book overall.
  22. Pacific Clipper I already own. I managed to forget that it was MSPE and didn't include it in my list. The descriptions for Stormhaven, Raid on Rajallapor, and Adventure of the Jade Jaguar are rather vague. Anyone out there have these? Do they offer any pulp value?
  23. Ah, okay. That would be why. I never looked at the adventures. Thanks D-Man. I'll trundle on over there now.
  24. Hmmm..I don't recall MS&PE having anything too overtly pulpish but my memory could be failing. I can contact Loomis or Stackpole and ask on that one unless someone here remembers specifics. Thanks for the idea. I'll look into it. Any others, folks?
  25. Well, I'm back in the saddle again for my Pulp Hero game. Here's what I own and what I know of for materials. I always appreciate additional info if any of you have it. I own: Justice Inc Lands of Mystery Pulp Adventures (I.C.E Rolemaster supplement for those that don't know) Places of Mystery (GURPS book) Almost every AC Quarterly. I really need to figure out which one or two I am missing) I am aware of: Adventure! Cliffhangers Daredevils Two-Fisted Tales Gear Krieg? So the question is, what else is out there? We've talked about Call of Cthulhu (and since we play at Hastur Hobbies that should be a big one). I'm more interested in period materials than in CoC's horror. If anyone knows chapter and verse on the books that would help here, I'd appreciate you posting it. Am I missing any past or present pulp game resources in my list? Thanks much
