  1. Re: Is Flight Slow?

Combat movement is one of the big ways Champions diverges from most published supers.

Spiderman in the movies swings with combat precision so fast the eye cannot follow him.

He does? I never had a problem seeing him. :)

  2. Re: The Amazing Darkon

It was almost as funny as the day Sparkler almost beat a team on her own. But that's another story.

This is a story that must be told.

(PS what happens if you use Images to create light in a Darkness field?)

  3. Re: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks Hero

    Ahhhh... 50 miles long?

OK. You can walk across that in 2 days, and much of that is going to be engines, fuel tanks, stuff like that. The place simply isn't big enough to have enough variation for an interesting world, even if you have several decks,

  4. Re: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks Hero

How big IS this ship? Doesn't seem like you could get much travelling done.

I think it's kind of odd that TSR would choose the "Orphans in the Sky" setting for their second (?) foray into RPGs. It doesn't seem like a very popular genre. Space opera would be more logical.

    When was Boot Hill?

  5. Re: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks Hero

Thanks. Well that shows how much of a DnD scholar I am not.

I think I remember the cover of In Search of the Unknown -- but not the contents.

Speaking of this old-school TSR sci-fi fantasy stuff, has anybody ever done anything with Metamorphosis Alpha? I think the setting was just too small (literally) to make an interesting long-term campaign.

  6. Re: Silence is Golden

I think that this make Voice linked to the Sonic Attack, rather than the triggered power.

Since he can lower his voice (probably takes a Power skill check), he can reduce the amount of damage proportionally to the volume of his voice.

This would be, to me, the best way of handling this power. The primary power here would be the voice attack.

Now, an argument could be made to have these powers doubly-linked... as the voice attack requires that he speaks, right?

What if he has an attack Multipower? Can you link to a Multipower?

  7. Re: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks Hero

Ironically' date=' one of the more fun kinds of adventures is to port fantasy characters into the modern world for one adventure. It's fun for role playing, you just don't want to overdo it.[/quote']

Does anybody remember an old old old old old old Dragon magazine feature involving a group of evil DnD beasties fighting a WWII German Wehrmacht squad? I seem to remember this from Junior High -- harpies vs. halftracks, or something like this.

  8. Re: Hypothetical Planets (in our solar system)

Looks like 1929. But yes' date=' it was suspected that "Planet X" existed before Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto. Re-examining some photographic plates, Percival Lowell had actually photographed Pluto before his death in 1916 but failed to recognize his long-sought Planet X when he saw it.[/quote']

I checked my annotated Lovecraft, and it seems that HPL joked with friends after the discovery of Pluto that "they have discovered Yuggoth!" It's in a letter to Bloch or somebody.

  9. Re: Silence is Golden

I built it with trigger because if he works the same way Blackbolt does, if he makes any sound with his vocal cords and his mouth is open, he uses his power automatically.

But that makes it an advantage, no?; when actually it's a bad thing for the character? Isn't this analogous to buying a gun with Trigger (when character pulls trigger of gun)? The speaking is just the SFX of activating the power.

  10. Re: Dreams in the HERO House

I used to have recurring dreams in which I would be located in areas of immense size -- buildings that went on for miles (often made of glass), endless beaches. Usually there would be large objects floating about like gargantuan museum pieces. Salvador Dali Hero?

There was also the perpetual "falling horizontally" dream, in which I knew that at any moment gravity could change polarity and I would be swept off the side of a building/into the street and "down" became redefined.

Aha! The paranoid dream! Probably the inspiration for many a Philip Dick novel. The dreamer learns that the people he thought were his friends/family are actually malevolent beings out to get him, or are deceiving him for some other reason.

And then there's the scenario in which all the characters go to school in their underwear.

  11. Hiow would you guys build a Black Bolt type of character, one who cannot speak without unleashing his feared destructive power? I have a couple of issues here.

    1. Incantations vs. Restrainable vs. Not Usable in a Vaccum (sorry, I can never spell this word). I've never quite understood whether Incantations includes the Not in a Vacuum limitation, which would be odd since they are both -1/4 Limitations (for Incantations for an Instant power). Also, it seems a Grab could keep the character from speaking (you cover his mouth), which sounds like Restrainable, which for some reason is a -1/2 limitation, which makes me wonder why Incantations exists at all. ????

    2. How to do the fact that he cannot speak without using his power? A Disadvantage seems appropriate, but part of me wants to say Side Effects -- which wouldn't work, since speaking is not a power.

Enlighten me, oh board members great and glorious!

  12. Re: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks Hero

I'm converting AD&D modules to Fantasy Hero (set in my world) but I didn't like that one at all and won't be doing it. Sci Fi/Fantasy crossover stuff just doesn't work in my mind and it's just grossly cliche'd by this point. EVERY fantasy setting seems to have aliens and crashed spacecraft somewhere' date=' likely because of this module.[/quote']

Didn't Gygax (mourn mourn mourn :() do this interdimensional crossover stuff several times? In the Land Beyond the Magic Mirror the characters can come across a 20th-century stamp collection and some 1980s-tech stuff.
