Tjack reacted to Cancer in A Thread for Random Musings
Got this prompt from a professional society (Association for Women in Science, of which I've been a member since the early '90s) this morning, and I find myself incapable of giving a straight answer. So I've decided I'll make this a satirical NGD topic somehow. Things that came to mind:
No blood stains anywhere! W00t! If there's still Jameson's in the bottle, I can cope. That momentary precious, shocked silence right after the explosion but before the screaming. I have my towel, so I don't have to panic. -
Tjack reacted to Cancer in A Little Good News
Heh. Could be I could've done something like that.
My blood type is AB-positive, one of the types on the infrequent side. What turned out to be more important ... there is a virus whose name I do not remember, whose effect is, if you are under 24 hours old, it kills you; if you are over 24 hours old, it does nothing. Most people you see have it. I don't, or at least didn't at the time.
In Austin I lived eight blocks from the blood bank for years. They knew the blood type thing, the no virus thing, and the lived-nearby thing, and as a healthy young man in his 20s, they called me up like clockwork as soon as I was eligible, and at least twice they wanted to skate in below the hematocrit threshold because they had an AB-positive infant in the region who needed a transfusion today. I didn't quite rack up five gallons donated in my time there, but it was close.

Tjack reacted to DShomshak in Ghostbusters
Like new Shimmer, which is both a floor wax AND a dessert topping, Ghostbusters managed to be both wacky comedy AND supernatural horror. A truly incredible achievement.
Bairtd Searles, the movie and TV reviewer for Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction when it came out, compared the initial "play the supernatural for laughs" to the frothy fantasies of Thorne Smith, sliding seamlessly to something worthy of H. P. Lovecraft. He was gobsmacked.

Tjack got a reaction from slikmar in What Have You Watched Recently?
I’m just finishing re-watching the first season of Veronica Mars. Very, very good stuff. Kind of teen noir.

You just have to do it once in front of the others to show ‘em who’s boss.

Are you the guy who microwaved his d20 after rolling too many 1s?

Tjack got a reaction from Steve in Teen Champions Settings
An easier route to the all teen powered city would be to state that the city had no paranormals to speak of until an origin producing event (Toxic spill, meteor impact, dimensional rift, whatever) took place at a location where a large number of teens were in attendance. (like a concert or something) and the effects were only manifesting powers to those whose biology hadn’t achieved maturity. Teens got powers, adults got cancer.
If you want to push the whole YOLO, “live fast, die young” thing you could say that once the infected paranormal’s biology achieved maturity the cancer would begin to take hold.

Sorry, not the Okaarans. Starfire was captured by the Gordanians, reptilians with three-fingered hands who at the time were slavers and enforcers for the Citadel Empire, dominating the Vega star system.
The Okaarans, aka the Warlords of Okaara, were masters of all the martial arts and sciences, on the one world of Vega that was not subject to the Citadel.

Tjack reacted to Ternaugh in "Neat" Pictures
I'm well familiar with the song as found on A Kind of Magic, but I've never really found the actual soundtrack at a price that I'd want to pay. I've thought about it a few times, but a little voice always tells me, "Don't Lose Your Head".

I got a letter from the fedloan people regarding my PSLF (student loan forgiveness) status. They recalculated things and I have only four payments left!

In a number of recent interviews with the remaining actors the weight of the packs was mentioned. All three actors said they were around 40 lbs. and very difficult to wear on a long term basis or when running.

Delaney talks to statues
As she dances 'round the pool
She chases cats through Roman ruins
And stomps on big toadstools
She speaks a language all her own
That I cannot discover
But she knows I love her so
When I tuck her 'neath the covers Father, daughter
Down by the water
Shells sink, dreams float
Life's good on our boat Delaney draws me pictures
She finger paints the sand
We chase the dogs and hop like frogs
Then I do my bad handstand
She's growing up too fast for me
And asking lots of questions
Some I know the answers to
And some I'm looking for suggestions Father, daughter
Born by the water
Surf's up, sun's down
Life in a beach town And some of the things I've seen
Maybe she won't have to see
But there's a lot I want to pass along
That was handed down to me Delaney talks to statues
As she dances 'round the pool
She chases cats through Roman ruins
And stomps on big toadstools
She speaks a language all her own
Just a little like her mother
And she knows I love her so
When I tuck her 'neath the covers Father, daughter
Down by the water
Shells sink, dreams float
Life's good on our boat
