    Discord is super popular!

When I went to look for a Discord server for HERO I found a small server focused on a superhero setting that discussed a bunch of RPGs. Not exactly HERO-related. Having a Twitter account doesn't mean I hate Facebook. I use a bunch of different social media platforms. I feel like the goal here is to meet people where they are at. It doesn't hurt to have a presence on every platform. Did you know there is a /r/Champions and /r/herosystem Reddit forums? A Facebook fangroup?

To wit: when I upload something to the downloads here, I link to it in other places - to encourage people to come look here! The goal is to generate buzz, find people where they are at and then share stuff with those interested. One of the big issues with non-current-D&D RPGs is keeping the presence up to those looking for something else. I believe having a Discord server could help on that front. Think of it as screaming into the room from under the 800lb gorilla...

Actually, I like "by default", followed by "options to vary from that default".  That way, the GM knows what setting the dials moves him away from.

I could see deletion of the Speed system paragraph entirely.  It is one very specific element of the system, where the preceding paragraphs are about the system overall.  Calling in "the crowning feature" is, I think, over the top marketing hyperbole - there are numerous system elements of equal, even greater, importance.

I would also note that our pitch clearly targets experienced gamers familiar with D&D (1st level wizards; defences are real).  Let's play with it a bit.

OK, exactly 300 words.  It cost me the Speed chart (and a "The" to squeeze in those last three words), but this is my elevator pitch.

OK, I'll play - starting with Doc's summary and rearranging and editing, I get 296 words as follows:

The Hero System provides an extremely wide range of options.  The default system strives for cinematic reality, however various options exist to alter the system’s lethality, level of realism, etc.  The role of GMs includes deciding which options will be used and providing players with reasonably detailed guidelines on how to build their characters.

Hero does not have built-in guidelines (no 1st level wizards) and so it falls to the GM to ensure such context exists ahead of running a game.  While Hero strives for a balanced, “get what you pay for and pay for what you get”, model, the GM must exercise a level of oversight.

Players build their characters in a detailed fashion.  Starting from a default “basic human” set of abilities, players spend character points on their characters’ abilities, skills, physical and mental attributes and a wide range of possible abilities, both for combat and out-of-combat play.

Task resolution in Hero System governed by a 3D6 roll, which determines whether any contest is a success or a failure.  The default for most rolls is to roll 11 or less on 3D6, which can be modified (up or down) based on the character’s abilities, as well as diverse environmental and contextual modifiers.

In combat, damage is inflicted against defences.  Damage (and defences) are most often defined as either energy or physical and may inflict both STUN (leading to unconsciousness) and BODY (leading to death) damage.

One unique feature of the system is the Speed characteristic, purchased in character design.  Speed determines how often a character acts in a game turn.  The Speed Chart governs the default order in which characters’ actions will take place. Strategic decisions to delay the character’s actions in relation to those of opponents is a key facet of game play.

I think the crucial inclusions are "you have to do a lot of design work to pick the options most suitable for your game and oversee character builds", "cinematic reality", "get what you pay for and pay for what you get",  "Character build is detailed and diverse options exist", the 3d6 roll, defenses, STUN and BOD.  SPD is nice, but I would sacrifice that detail to get the other concepts across.  The one issue I would consider adding is "mechanics divorced from SFX", but I think this has become more common, albeit not in the D&D world, and is subsumed in "detailed character design".

    It is a TOUGH gig.

My first attempt which may be poorly thought through, is exactly 300 words.

The core of the HERO system is the 3D6 roll, you roll 3D6 to determine whether any contest is a success or a failure.  The default for most rolls is to roll 11 or less on 3D6 and that can be modified up or down based on skill levels, environmental and contextual modifiers and, in some games, powers possessed by characters involved in the contest.

In combat, a success means inflicting damage against defences.  Damage (and defences) is most often defined as either energy or physical and may inflict both STUN (which counts towards unconsciousness) and BODY (which counts towards death) damage.

Players get to build their characters in a reasonably detailed fashion.  Every character begins with a default set of abilities that represent a basic human set of abilities.  Character points can then be spent on characters’ combat abilities, skills, physical and mental attributes and a wide range of abilities that are detailed in the Powers section of the book.

A key feature of the system is the Speed Chart.  One characteristic that is available is SPEED.  This determines how often a character acts in a game turn.  If characters have different SPEEDS the Speed Chart outlines the order in which, by default, various characters’ actions will take place. Much of the strategy in the game revolves around how players manage their character’s actions in relation to those of opponents.

The system allows an extremely wide range of options, the GMs primary role ahead of running a game is to make decisions about what options will be used from the rulebook and to provide players with reasonably detailed guidelines for players on how to build their characters.  HERO does not have built-in guidelines (no 1st level wizards) and so it falls to the GM to ensure such context exists.

I have a tendency to forget power modifiers if they're not on the sheet I'm looking at.  But then I'm also fine with playing the game with characters made in the ultra-minimalist notebook paper template format.

I submitted an updated version of the first edition Fantasy Hero spell creation sheet, usable with any game in 4th edition plus.  (Here.)  I wonder if that could be adapted to a Hero Designer export template?

So, being that I speak Adobe and being that I have some skillz (lulz), I would like to make an offer to ALL Hall of Champions participants. I am happy to help create high quality covers, previews and final products for upload.

    For free.

I've seen a ton of shout outs on Facebook and the covers are blurry and terrible (I mean no offense...). I would like to level-up our social media presence and this will go a long way towards making it all look "more shiny".

I can also create FB sized previews that fit better (also Instagram and Twitter), so you can ensure your product puts its best foot forward (we can forward these to Jason if he's cool with that...).

It totally is Zen. 🙂  It's theory wank, but designers and tinkerers love theory wank!

GURPS is a hybrid of a "details matter" and "reason from effect" game. Equipment, the physics of actions and the world, the skills. Tons of details (differentiations). The "Powers" system of ads/disads, etc. starts with moderate details but allows you to customize with the "reason from effect" paradigm. You can take some power constructs and bend them to things you want to accomplish that don't necessarily fit the name of the power. GURPS seems more fiddly than it is because of the hybrid. Sometimes you are constructing a power that obviously the power you want. Other times you end up in a fog trying to file the rough edges of something where the details are not helping.

HERO is mostly all "reason from effect". It's about creating a generic framework of system bits that then cover the majority of "things you can do, things you are made of, things that can happen to you". It forgoes lots of the differentiation of similar things for flexibility. All these powers are basically building blocks you use to construct "all the things". There is a consistency then to those things. Sometimes however, these things can get "weird". So, a gun being set up as a "beam"... I'm like "that's not a beam! it's a projectile!" and HERO is like "dude, relax, it's just a mechanic. Describe it how you want to." 😄

The truth is they are both great games with savvy design and TONS of thought put into them. I own tons of GURPS 4e and GM'd it for a long time (and played/GM'd a ton of HERO 5er before that!). I've moved back towards HERO because it focuses on the details I want. I love magic, powers and the like. I want the ability to customize those the most. I don't care so much for equipment lists, skill lists, or even physics emulators. HERO leans more "story-based" in this regard. In my opinion it has less calculations or laser-specific rules that just fits how I GM.

It comes down to preferences. Each person is going to find the parts in one of these systems they prefer over the over; and then likely choose it because it fits them. The rest of the debate is just theory, highly subjective and difficult to measure.

    Just my two cents...

For the most part, in Hero, we don't really care whether our target dies, as much as we care whether our target is "out".  Whether that's dead, unconscious in GM-discretionland, unconscious by 1 and staying down, whatever.  For genres where the primary attack type is Killing, we can pretty much get all of that from Hit Locations plus sectional defenses.  It's not laid out for you right in front, and it's not a Champions-style or even D&D-style slugfest.  You have to take advantage of cover, you have to Brace & Set when you can, you have to use CSLs, and most importantly you have to have a team.

I'm aware of how... vociferously... IRL gun enthusiasts discuss the... vast differences between, let's say, a 10mm round and a .40 S&W... and, I mean, is there really?

Equipment in heroic games isn't built showing all the powers and such because its not going to come up (the active points of a Winchester '76 rifle is irrelevant; nobody is going to dispel or drain it).  They're just presented as basic equipment with stats.  Western Hero was very vague in its presentation of weapons, without much detail beyond caliber.  The new edition coming out in a bit will have more specific things about particular guns, since that's pretty interesting to most players.
