Also note if you look at the construction of both they are six 8pt-level CSL's with limitations on them (one being 'only for damage'), so you are looking at a 48pt active cost.

Ok, rechecked - deadly blow is six 8pts-lvls, weapon master is six 3,5, or 8pt-lvls depending. You figure though a 4pt +1DC level is 2 3pt CSL with a -1/2 "only for damage" -- 6 active pts, 4 real.

I was thinking about the point structure as well.  I would think the MA DCs have to start from STR as they have the ability to add STR to MA maneuvers.  5 pts of STR bought with a (-1/4 - only usable with martial art maneuvers) comes out to 4 pts a DC.

  2. So I've constructed a dwarven street fighting style....going from the assumption that carpenters and masons would use the tools at hand, it has weapon elements for clubs, maces, hammers and fist loads.  An expert in the style takes weapon master for all the weapons and the martial art - 20 pt version for +3DCs.  Now its a lot cheaper to take +3 DCs from martial arts for 4pts / DC, and those three DCs apply +15 STR to disarms, escapes and grabs.  Since the same weapons are weapon elements of the MA, the +3 DCs also apply to the weapons.

So this gets more application for 12 pts than the 20 for weapon master.  Did I make a mistake, or is this just an example of some ways give more efficient results?

  3. I'm trying to build magic/mystic powers into tattoos that have some preparation required and at the same time have some limits to their uses...that are either temporary, or too steep a cost to continue with.  Building persistent powers into this idea has proven tough for me, as the idea is that the are woven or inserted into the tattoo, then expended later.  Instants are fine, build with a few charges.  Constant are fine as the require END and you don't want to use them forever.  However Characteristics as Powers and Resistant are both giving me a hard time to model well.  I'm using restrainable (-1/4) for the tattoos as they don't fit an OIF or IIF, and there's a couple of ways to make them inoperable in and out of combat.  For Heroic Fantasy.

    1)  I tried building SPD 2 initially with just a time limit, but that was unsatisfying as it can be activated in the initial phase 12 and lasts the whole combat.  Doesn't seem a (-2 one minute time limit) is really a limitation like this.  SPD 2 (20AP) (-1/4) restrainable (tattoo can be marred, targeted etc), and 1 minute time limit (-2) gives a 6 CP real.  Time limit also should be used with powers that require some prep, like gestures or such.

    2) So I tried one charge, that's recoverable

and we have 1 charge (-2), but move 3 levels down for 1 minute continuing charges, and another 2 levels for recoverable, so we have (-1/2).  Can be used once, but given some time outside of combat can recover the charge.  In this case it would be 30 seconds 'recharging" the energy stored in the tattoo.  No other actions allowed for those 30 seconds.  This is a 11pt real cost for more or less the same effect as one above., but slightly better theme as it requires an out of combat interval to re-use the hefty +2 SPD.

    3) Extra time and delayed effect:

Now I'm building it like the potions in FH, but delayed effect normally requires a campaign restriction on # of powers active.  Extra time of one minute (-1 1/2) (to store or weave the mana into the tattoo) with delayed effect (+1/4) and we have 25 active, with a 9 real cost.  The 'resetting' or 'reloading' of the tattoo is better defined and then it sits ready to use, has an out of combat reload like #2 which I like.  BUT there's no limit on it once it's activated and could stay active forever.  I could try to put an END cost so it couldn't stay on forever, but delayed effect pay the END up front when you store it.

Any ideas on how to approach this would be appreciated.  #1 seems to cheap, #3 bends the rules a little, and again seems to be missing a key restriction for the idea, i.e., that it's temporary

There are several great game stores down there. The Game Matrix in Lakewood and Gabby's Olympic Cards & Comics in Lacey.

I used to live down south, and there are TONS of games. If you want to find something closer by, it shouldn't be hard.

I would start a new thread "Looking for HERO 6e in Ft. Lewis / Tacoma / Lakewood / Lacey". Also, Reddit's /r/lfg would be good too.

Thanks for the advice!  I've been on rpg.net, pen&paper, r/lfg, meetup, and haven't found anything yet.  I've found tons of games, but no Hero yet.  I've moved so damn often that I'm always compromising on system to just be able to play something.  This is my last move so I'm really trying to put in the time and effort to find a good group playing what I want to play.  I'm not stuck on just Hero, but I want it to be one of the games at the table.

Does your old group down Tacoma way have any open slots or be willing to give a new person a try?

     I've been reading furiously and

Me too brother, between work and kids I'm lucky if I can put in more than five hours a week to learning the rules and there are over 2000 pages sitting on my shelf.  Nothing is hard to understand, they are really quite well written for RPG materials.  It's the volume of rules and trying to remember how this modifier here will affect all the other possibilities.  I like a challenge though.

I've seen several people suggest one of the Completes (Fantasy/Champions), but they're not complete to my OCD laden soul.  They leave out all the 'toolkitting' info and some examples etc.  6E1 and 6E2 are my current lite-reading projects.  Not to mention the Completes don't come with all the page references that Core does, (nor the really good index), so when I have a question I can quickly find it.  But if you haven't seen those comments, many people endorse that path.

  6. So....I’m an egregious lurker. I lurked for 6 months before I made an account. And, this is my second post in two months since creation.  I’m honestly mostly here browsing as I learn the game and try to find a group.

How did you come up with your handle?

It’s a very old email ID that I use for all gaming web sites, forums, meetups, etc.

    First tabletop RPG?

    Red box D&D circa 1985.

    First tabletop RPG to GM?

Talislanta, circa 1992. Early college. I was tired of DND franchise, and even the alternatives we explored were thematically similar like Earthdawn, Rolemaster, and Runequest. Both Rolemaster and Runequest did that genre very well, but still elves and dwarves. Very lucky at this point to have a big group that explored dozens of systems, with 6+ GMs.

What at are you currently playing or GMing?

I GM a Deadlands Reloaded game in Savage Worlds. I play a regular DND 5e game and some sporadic Call of Cthulhu and Dungeon Crawl Classics. I move often (military), and often end up with what I can find rather than what I want to play.

When end did you start to play Hero?

My college group used Champions for our superhero games and GURPS as our generic engine for our home brew that didn’t work with an existing system. I re-discovered Hero a few years ago when I was yet again frustrated with the limits and lack of crunch from other games. I haven’t played it since ‘96 or so, but I’ve a 1/2 dozen 6e books I read when I daydream about playing a real game again.

My next move to the greater Seattle area this summer, 2019, is my last. I don’t want to settle again and would like to find a good group to play with.

  7. Are you still looking for members? I will be moving to the area from the east coast in Summer 19 and need to find a new group. I have over 30 years of gaming experience and have GM’d several systems, but only played Hero. Rotating GMs is fine with me, and I was part of a GURPS group for several years that did the same when I lived in LA.
