    Eh.

Had to go into a week of exile for medical and legal reasons (without meds, I tend to be more violent than I actually want to be), so I touched it up here and there.

Oicked,up meds late yesterday, and already I have moved from "that guy needs stabbing" down to "that guy needs a blow to the neck!"

    Small steps, Sir,

    Black Ice

John Ling is neither black, nor does he have cold-based powers, which confused reporters for a while (everybody else figured it out fast). His actual power is to influence the friction coefficient of any materials around him, making it horribly sticky or as slick as, well, black ice.
John invented his gloves, which enable his amazing abilities, but this has been his one success story. Everything else he's invented has been a complete bust, or worse, something he then had to adopt his costumed ID to stop (the autonomous, self-replicating senior's walking frame was especially embarrassing...). Of course, he could make a fortune if he sold his friction control tech, but he'd have to think of that, and his brain is always full of new ideas. Right now, he's working on lunar energy.

    UThanks, Tribble; it's back up.

Alas, I am very pressed for time, but to get things rolling:

Sandy Mitchel had the worst luck ever.  "Let's go skiing!"  He said.  "It'll be fun!" He said.  "You're from the northern US, right?  You know how to ski, right?"

"Yes, and _heck yes!" She lied.  Shw and Tony had only been dating for six weeks, but she wasnt going to turn down an opportunity to spend a weeked at one of those swanky ski resorts, no, Sir!

She had really believed Tony just wanted to get away, with her, for the weekend.  She figured she wouldn't have too much trouble talking him into meals, enjoying that lounge with that massive fireplace, watching the snow, and heading back to their room for... "A while."

Who'd'a thought the big lug actually wanted to _ski_?!

So here she was, he'll and fone from the main trail, ankle-deep in a crevice.  That sounded better than it actually was, what with her being upside down and all.

"Crevice" wasn't accurate at all.  She wasn't sure where she was in relation to the trail: as soon as ahe went over the side and saw the forest racing toward her, she instinctively wrapped her arms around her head.  She remembered screaming "pizza! Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!" Over amd over again, but for the life of her, she couldn't figure out why.

She looked up-  err, _down_.  Down, just a little bit above her.  Hey; that's probably why she couldn't remember what yelling 'pizza!' was supposed to do.  That... That was a lot of blood.  There was a small puddle of it; like being ankle-deep in snow, it didn't sound bad on the outset, not until one got around to wondering how much more had soaked into the snow below.

She was keenly aware of the wet warm, sensation at the her left arm, her lower right leg, and most worrisomely, the back of her head.  There were lumps in the snow, ahe noticed.  She had no idea what that meant,  but it did cause her to wonder several worrisome things about her head wound.

She was becoming dizzy and nauseous- more, she hoped, from being upside down for who knows how long than from blood loss.  She spent a considerable amount of time tryng to decide if she was okay with dying like this or if she felt she should add some sort of struggle to her last few minutes of life.

Finally, human nature decided for her.  She was cold.  Too cold.  She wasn't going to die that way; it was too miserable.  Besides, there was light in this small... Crevice?  Cave?  Ravine?  This place.  Lot's of rocks; lots of snow, but pretty decent light.  There was probably a way- maybe even several ways- out of here.  Just her luck to be stuck in the only tight spot.

She began to try to pull herself free of the snow and earth that wedged her in place, just a few feet from the snow below her. She felt the agony of her broken bones and stopped struggling.  "Screw it" she thought.  "I'll die cold."

But her luck held.  No sooner had she stopped wiggling and twisting than a bit of the soil that held her broke free and dropped defiantly to the ground beneath her.  "Well screw you, too!"  she yelled to the fist-sized lump of loam.

Then a second bit broke free and dropped.  She stared at them in anger.  After a few droos of her precious blood had begun to paint them, her anger exploded. "Well?  What are you waiting for?  You'e free!"  She waited for a response.  When it became clear that none was coming, she yelled again. "Run, you cowards!  Go on; get out of here!  I don't need you!  We don't need you!  Go!!"  Then there was a hard blow to the back of her head, so sharp as send her senses into a nauseating spin, then a soft 'plompf' hit the snow below her.  A fist-sized stone stared at her.   She glared hatefuly at it.  "Couldn't just _leave_, could you?  Couldn't just roll on out of here without tacking a crack at me, could you?!  Well we I don't need you, either!  Take your friends and go, you _traitor_!"

    Then a pebble fell.

    Then another.

Then anither and another and another and in sexonds there was a small avalanche of gravel and loose soil ans she felt, her body shift slightly_

"No!  Not all of you!  You can't _all_ love him more!  You can't just _leave_ me-"

Then the cascade became deafening as stone and soil and even snow showered around her and suddenly she was _pushed_ forcefully down to the blood-soaked cavern floor by the weight of the mass around her collapsing.  Ahe caught sight of what looked like an entire tree falling toward her.  "Hunh." she thought with bemusement.  "It really does happen in slow motion."  She watched as the massive, half-rotten old tree chased her downward, slowly rotating-

Then there was a microscopic instant of pain beyond all imagination.  Then there was nothing at all.

"There is a waiting room" Sandy thought with wry amusement.  Even death had a schedule.  She thought Back to the agony of dragging herself through the crevice for who knows how far or how long.  She'd have just given up if it hadn't been for that weird dog.  She had begun to realize that she had been crawling steadily downward; the edges of the crevice now seemed miles above her-  though that could be delirium, too.  Either was, she wasn't getting up those walls.  Even in good health, she wasn't particularly athletic.  Why should she be?!  She was attractive, financially-secure, and reasonably intelligent.  She never had any problems finding someone to lift a box or fetch her car in the rain.  She had absolutely no reason to lift cows or climb rocks in her spare time!  "Well," she thought, "at least I outran those damned rocks!  Serves them right!"  As a bonus, she realized the bleeding had stopped.  Tentative probing with the fingers on her good hand suggested the blood had frozen into a sort of bandage.  That was fine; at least it didn't hurt anymore.

Then there was light in the distance- a square of reddish-orange light had slid into existence ahead of her, and something had crept out.  Purposefully, it began to trot towards her.  As it neared, she managed to work out that it was roughly dog-sized.  Eh. Maybe she just decided it was dog-sized.  It was-  okay, maybe she just decided it was dog-shaped, and it probably didn't matter how many legs it had, since nobody _really_ knew how many legs a dog had anyway.  So it was just a wierd plastic-and-metal dog.

It had used it dog's and-like pincer mandible to sieze her by the scruff of her coat and a couple of it's doggy tentacles to wrap around and support her head and injured limbs.  She was grateful for her constant cycle of blacking out; she was certain it was saving her some pain.  She was becoming frustrated by the repeated cycling into consciousness, though.  Pain, delirium, waves of nausea.

The wierd dog sat her down here, in this antiseptic waiting room.  The walls were... Warm.  Hard, metallic, but warm.  The red-orange light glowed from the ceiling as a whole, giving the illusion of having no source at all.  For just a moment, she was under a warm red-orange sun, sunning herself in her metalic back yard.  Then she remembered the walls and she was back in this clerkless waiting room.  The warmth was bringing back more pain, and scratching an itchy scalp proved that her head-  oh my god!  What was that in her hand?!

A door slid open in a featureless wall.  She blinked at the wingless angel that clicked and skittered into the room and stopped just out or reach.  She stared at it.  It remained motionless.  It made no sound.  Then there was the faintest mechanical whirr and it shrieked.  It made a blood-curdling, horrific screeching noise that tore through her peceptions and threatened to jelly her eyes.  She attempted to cover her head, to curl into a ball, but there were too many things broken and battered in her body.  All she could do was gasp and sob for the eternity the not-an-angel shrieked at her.

'Hell.'  She thought.  'One stupid skiing trip and I did and go to Hell.  Why couldn't this happen at work?  During one of those stupid department meetings?  Or budget analysis?  And where's my dog?  Does he have to go, too?  He was a good dog!  He tried to save me.  'Course, he _did_ drag me to the waiting room for Hell..'

"Hey!" She yelled to what she now understood the be a demon.  "Take that damned dog!  This was hus idea!"

Two smaller openings appeared in another wall.  Two disk-shaped machines floated into the airlock.

'More demons?' Sandy thought as she observed the floating objects.  The circled her before pausing briefly.  One of them split slightly, then seemed to her thicker-  some sort of instant growth spurt that doubled its thickness.  Coils unwound from around it and begun to float and probe the air.  The second one twisted at the midsection, then shrieked and screamed at her as the first monster had done.  She screamed to, but in blind terror; she had no idea what else to do.

The first disk was reaching for her thirty tentacles, maybe more.  Lights played from some, sounds from others.  A few more begun to lightly touch and probe here and there, eliciting fresh screams where some parts were more tender, and others were in absolute agony-  some parts were in so much pain that she didnt even notice the handful of with tenticles that were peircing her flesh here and there, probing deeper into her.

Another demon entered- squat and round like the first one, but on wheels- well, balls of a sort.  Several limbs extended outward from it and stabbed into Sandy's body.  The pain was biblical, but stopped almost instantaneously-- the two tenticles stabbing into her brain may have had a lot to do with that.

As the machine trundled closer, she could see some sort of twisted gremlin on its surface- a grotesquely straight from a horror movie.  It wasn't until she saw one of the floating disk demons move in behind it that she realized she was seeing her reflection.  A remote part of her subconsciousness objectively noted that most of her face seemed to be missing.  She had a bried moment to try to remember where she had left it before the large demon- the first one- moved closer, reaching for her with limbs that sprang from its cylindrical body.  Then even her abysmal luck felt guilty for what it had done, and she died.

    _Status_?

    _Biological subject continues_.

    _Status of current host body_?

_Transplant contraindicated.  Subject is or is descended from Kahree hybridization experiment.  Outcomes known for Kahree irrelevant.  No known outcomes for hybridized species_.

    _Extent of intervention_?

_Fluid loss of primary concern.  New integumentary system synthesized and bonded to fascia.  Fascia deemed insufficient for both bonding and servicing integument and for protecting vital systems of subject.  New fascia tissues synthesized and bonded to subject.  Non-Kahree DNA subroutines rewritten to support and maintain both fascia and integument.  Both synthetic tissues will be nurtured and replicated by subject biological without undue stress on existing systems.

Number of limbs uncertain; skeletal and circulatory analysis suggests bilateral symmetry to be the norm for this subject; that norm has been restored.

Subject presented with numerous elements of skeletal and ligaments support structure shattered or otherwise damaged, suggesting insufficient adaptation for local conditions.  Damaged skeletal, ligamental, and muscular elements repaired.  Improved musculature DNA has been encoded; ligaments will regrow stronger and more securely attached to skeletal components.  Synthetic skeletal compounds and lattice work have been infused with existing structure; DNA encoding to allow continued repair and production of these elements is ongoing; expected to be completed before maintenance cycle.  Production of circulatory fluid and immune-responsive circulatory components briefly impaired.  As original biological cells complete their functioning cycles and are replaced with new synthetics, this impairment will diminish.  Strongly positive outcome expected.

Circulatory system repaired; improved fascia and integument negates need for improvement in this system.

Of high concern is the loss of flesh, bone, and neurological tissue due to extensive damage to the cranium.  One of a pair of light-sensing organs was lost and replaced with an improved vat-grown biological designed by modifying DNA found in the surviving mated organ.  This study required destruction of the surviving organ; it, too, was replaced.  Design alterarions included adjustments for light conditions presymed prevalent in native environment, as ascertained by studying the area in which the subject was found.

The sensory cluster of olfactory receptors deemed too exposed for temperature and atmospheric conditions found in native environment.  No data for this hybrid is available.  Self-healing was deemed logical, though DNA shiws that subject requires a nasal lattice work that will not reconstruct before all telemeres are split, causing subject to cease.  DNA altered to effect accelerated healing process and telemere replication.  Telemere replication only partially successful, but facial lattice work and superstructure should heal well within the duration of subject's existence.

Of greater concern was loss of neurological tissue  from within the shattered cranium.  Likely owing to Kahree DNA, subject is incapable of regrowing or repairing neurological tissue.  Cloning and synthesizing results poor.  Multiple problems were solved with cybernetic treatment.  Mental capacity is greater than estimates for the original; communication is now possi la.  Subject's hearing was far too mis-tuned to interpret speech on proper frequencies; subject's vocalization apparatus far too weak to create proper speech.  Both have been modified through the chips implanted into the neural network to replace lost brain function.  Subjects current hearing and speaking ranges determined to be potential survival traits in native environment, and left intact.  Safest solution was extending range cybernetically.  Rapid healing for Brain tissue not possible, even with DNA encoding.  The nature of the cranium's natural development not conducive to safe rapid healing beyond small increments.

A cranial protection device has been developed which will interface with neural chips when worn and allow for both interpretation and broadcasting of speech as well as replacing most native sonic abilities known to be Kahree, at least until subject is able to heal its natural abilities.  Helmet will also in stages accelerate healing of and effectively protect the cranium until it has healed.

All reflexes test normal; subject responds to all stimuli within tolerable ranges while wearing protective communication helmet_.

The hikers found her, wandering the woods naked, clutching a ball of shredded and bloody clothing and wearing some sort of owl-faced helmet.  They attempted to hail her, to see if she was okay, and were knocked unconscious by a piercing scream that tore at their nervous system and a hard physical blow that launched them back several feet.

The naked woman ran toward them, screeching over and over, and upon reaching their unconscious bodies, fled into the woods.

She was sighted twice more that summer, but it wasn't until the middle of winter- peak tourist season- that sightings began to pour in, and a concentrated effort to find 'the screech owl witch' was taken in earnest.

Eventually she was found, naked and somehow impervious to the cold, sleeping on the same bloody and shredded clothes she was seen carrying.  Probably for the best.  She couldn't sleep in the helmet; it kinked her neck, but she knew she was supposed to wear it.

She was identified by the ID in her wallet (though none of it mentioned those crazy big eyes!) and eventually dental records and blood samples as Sandy Mitchell, the woman who had disappeared a year ago and for whom a three week manhunt  had been undertaken.  This woman, though--  she had some....  Problems...

She had massive gaps in her memory, and it was some time before her motor skills were one hundred percent (though they just kept getting better and better even after that).  She had cognitive deficits that were two years getting over-  it is worth noting that while her therapists were working on ways for her to cope with them, they actually just _went away_, without explanation. Except for the nightmares and the wild bits of stories she would share with her therapists, of course.  Even they werent really clear, but she was never going to forget them.

In just a couple  of years, she was better than normal, amd the doctors and therapists stopped scheduling appointments.

Then the bills started coming.  She had no job skills- she had absolutely no recollection of her job at all, and no permanent home.  As she was deemed,'cured,' even the charity that was putting her up began to hint that it was time for her to move on and let someone with more need take her place.

Well, it was pretty obvious that her life was going to go nowhere if she couldnt get some money, and she had no idea how to do that.

'That's okay,' she thought to herself while reaching for her helmet. 'Sandy Mitchell doesn't know how to survive here, but Screech does....'

    Winter Wail

This supervillain is used as an assassin by organised crime in Canada and the Northern United States as the cry is supposedly reminiscent of the Common Loon. They do not want to kill but the receiver they wear on their chest and attachments in the helmet force their compliance. It is not known whether this is a man or woman as they look fairly androgynous. But the cry can be deadly. Winter Wail has to look at the target to use the killing cry which is enforced by a signal to the receiver or to the helmet. Certainly if the receiver of the helmet can be impaired then the cry cannot be used. Although Winter Wail can still kill using martial arts or by using a quasi beak attack on the helmet. They are always accompanied by a pair of gangsters to make sure they do the job probably. They are usually called FREAK by those accompanying them which ended badly when they turned around and attacked them once control was broken.

Not as funny as I intended but I think it fits.

    Retro Gal
Rebeccca "Becky" Garfield has been a lot of things. Born in poverty and a drunken mother, Retro Gal could not leave the rural hill country fast enough. She always felt smarter than them, but when she hit her teenage years, she found out why. Her intelligence, already impressive, grew leaps and bounds. She was a mutant with many brain enhancements... one of them? Super-Genius. She grasped scientific concepts and engineering with amazing ease. She also proved to have other psychic abilities, including close contact telepathy and telekinesis! At 16, she used the latter to set her whiskey soaked mother on fire with a nearby candle after one too many slaps. It was the 1950s, and 'muties' were not loved them. Very little 'different' was. Becky went on the lamb, looking for a better life, and by better, she meant profitable. Had she more maturity then, she might have realized that invention with a few patents would be a safe and legal way to build it up. Instead, she met Mr. Dread. Oh she fell for him hard and he ? He showed her the ropes of villainy. Becky doesn't blame him for her going wrong, per se. She made her own choices. But there's no denying she was taken advantage of.

She grew to be a hardened criminal who went by the name "Ms. Rocket" , well she thought she was hardened anyway. She mostly assisted other villains in their plans, and yes, she robbed banks. She liked robbing banks. Made her feel like she was getting something back from Rich people. A lot of her devices were quickly taken up by the male members of the various teams she joined, some even stealing credit. THAT annoyed her and after a bit, she decided to get saucy about it. Perhaps a bit too saucy... when they had an encounter with a superhero team dubbed 'The Virtue Brigade' and started to lose, her team left her behind. Well, she ended up in Super prison, escaped twice, only to be caught again. At age 35, she finally was let out of jail, a reformed woman. She was a full decade behind the times and the new tech, and she raced to catch up. It was hard, an ex convict and a known mutant?  That's when she met Dr. Daryl Garfield. He was a brilliant man, a former boy genius now grown, shy and skittish. She was smarter than him, but rather than be intimidated, he delighted. He taught her what she had missed. And she? she caught up, and improved it. He didn't want anything from her but her company and for her to be happy. And she was.. .just not used to that. She actually found a decent man.

She had forgotten the world takes advantage of decent men. Time marched on. Marriage , children, and more. Becky found herself a happy enough home maker, but it was the lab with her husband where she thrived. Unfortunately, because of her criminal past ,she thought it best to let him handle face to face finances. They lived comfortably enough, but Daryl was, unknown to her, taken advantage of. Their tech was stolen, and with a sea of lawyers to hide behind and counter sue, the company that stole their idea seemed untouchable. Becky suited up, ready for revenge. And found... her powers, were fading. She had not realized her TK had grown weaker, that her telepathy was even more limited. She became alarmed. Somehow she was aging out of her powers and that would , eventually, include her hyper intelligence. Daryl talked her down twice. First, from becoming a supervillain again and risking capture. And secondly? from suicide.

She remained bright, but where once there had a super genius  with psychic powers, there came to be a simple grandmother. That company that had robbed them prospered, as the truly wicked who know how to work the system do. Daryl became ill.... and they didn't have the money to save him. Becky grand daughter, a muitant herself, found out the truth of how her grandmother and grandfather should have been MILLIONAIRES. She grew bitter on her grandma's behalf... and despite words of caution, went out to become a super villain herself.

When Timelapse appeared before Becky and made his offer, she leapt at the chance. Not for her vanity (Though it is nice to be a hottie again), not for her power (Though she really feels like she was incredibly dim in comparison now that her super IQ is back), or even for revenge (Though with her beloved Daryl gone, she's feeling no shame getting what was theirs from that company) but to help her Grand daughter avoid the same mistakes. Indeed, adopting a steampunk wardrobe (She came late to the genre but found it delightful and Verne esque) she has joined her grand daughter and her villain friends to make sure they don't get used and left to dry like she did. If they MUST be villains, they're going to be successful ones this time. Of course, her Grand daughter doesn't know this new ally is her old grandmother rejuvenated. She only knows they have a friend in the mysterious... RETRO GAL!

    NT: Wicked Revival
The time manipulating villain known as Timelapse is hard to understand, but his powers are many. Recently, he used one of his most coveted- the power to restore youth, on a group of aged villains. Originally none of them were younger than 58 (and many much older than that), now they've all been restored to the physical ages between 21 to 26 years old.  He had a job for reach of them, to pay for this. And they eagerly agreed.

Those jobs done, the villains are young again, powerful again, and ... having to adapt to being back in the game among a generation they don't quite understand. Some maybe more evil than ever, a few may be having second thoughts. We look now at least five of these villains

    Mind Wrangler
Before there was Clint Eastwood style cowboys in film, heck, before there was John Wayne, there was the singing Cowboy. Now rarely mentioned save as the subject of much parody and what some might call satire. Well, had scrawny Peter Billington but know that the cowboy hat he was trying on was more than your standard bit of Texas habberdashery, he might have just left it plumb where it lay. Soon enough he was transforming left and right to a singing cowboy hero folks to calling 'the Mind Wrangler'. He likes to sing and serenade his foes with powerful warbling ballads causing them to dance along, or mayhaps take a little siesta. Course, he can't talk what northern city folk would call 'normal' like this. Even if he manages not to sing, which is not easy, he still has a sweet western tone known to make the cows happy and the ladies all aflutter. Most feared of his powers is up to debate, but folks sure do not take a cotton to his form of telepathy. See, he don't just read your thoughts, no, the power in that hat makes one sing out your secrets for all to hear! To be fair, something in it makes you better than you'd normally be at the singing, but still, not many a desperado like confesses in a falsetto fashion bout his nefarious plans, or how he's pretty sure his mistress is  flirting with his no account henchmen on the side. Poor Peter comes along for the ride on these adventures, and is having a harder and harder time not helping those in need. You see, it's a white cowboy hat, and sure is tender hearted.

(Next person can do another hat then pick a new concept for another hero team, or just pick another hero team and skip the hat)

Agreed!   I have always loved this thread and one other as the best part of these boards but they are both extremely streaky: when they come back, they are  full-bore and full of energy and fun, than they go away for months at a time....

    It's great that it'a back.

Ans thank you for doing that!

I'll get to it; it takes me longer than ever having to do it via phone.  But I'll get there!

    Too easy!

That's Wallace Shawn!  I'd recognize him anywhere.  I can almost _feel_ his voice chewing it's way through my auditory and optic nerves as we speak!  Looks like this one was taken on his forty-fifth birthday, if I am not mistaken.

Super powers are easy, though:  Sonic Powers.  His voice can melt steel, shatter any crystaline structure, and soften or even melt plastics.  A full-power scream can blind you briefly.

The only known defense is playing a re2corsing of Gilbert Gottfried, which sets up a counter-resonance in an algebra-defying "negative times a negative equals zero" kind of thing.

Now on the whole "quality of images" thing--

Dudes, this image is one of my favorites, and I am pretty sure that it was meant to be a joke!

    It isn't-

    And this is for everybody-

It isnt about how conventional or unconventional the image is (it was a strange swimsuit cheesecake image that got me started playing instead of spectating, if anyone remembers.

It is about the challenge of doing something _with_ the image!  Just like that photo of Wallace Shawn up above:  I gave him superpowers!  Anyone who has never heard him speak might think I was just making it all up, but still:  I did something with the image.

Fact is, no image in this thread is perfect:  the ones that don't look like superheroes or supervillains... Well, they dont look like supers, and it's a ramp up in difficulty.  The ones that _do_ look like supers are so damnably generic (most of the time; not always) that it is hard to get a start: nothing leaps out to pick at (at what point did superhero looks become more about style than saying something about the character?  They might as well be wearing ski-suits with over-sized boots and gauntlets) and gives that initial inspiration.

So _none_ of these images, historically (except for that skeleton in jeans Tribble put up and some vaguely bug-looking dude someone else put up a while back) have been great images, but to me, that's kind of the _point_.  Who is he?  What can you do with her?  Who are these guys?

At the end of the day, unlike fantasy character art or aliens or spaceships, Googling for superhero images is going to return several hundred pages of well-know, well-loved copyrighted characters who are useless for this game.  Finding images isn't easy.

Somewhere there is a balance of "I finally found one" and "I think I can work with that" that makes this game work, that makes it fun!

If we are going to bash on the images or rage quit over a lack of responses, the game, disappears again, and no one gets to enjoy it.  The fact is, though, that not every image is going to inspire every player.  I think I have only ever done what?  Four?

Let's see....  The flagsuit barbie in dinoland, the mini Rich posted, one I put up myself (the guy with the sweatervest and belly and towel cape) and it seems one other, but I can't at the moment recall what it was-

It's the nature of inspiration.  Sometimes even what spoke to you yesterday will never speak to you again.  Sometimes it's the other way around.  Always, though, images are hard to find.

For what it's worth, I appreciate all of them- both for the time it took, and for the fact that someone thought it might work for someone else.

    And finally:

I take _all_ my "entries" (quoted not to minimise them, but because I only play for fun) seriously: even a tongue-in-cheek suggestion is meant as a very real suggestion: some characters are just more light-hearted than others; that does not devalue the character or the effort that went into creating it.

I'm not going to rage quit, though.  I am going to assume that I missed out on a very strange blood sugar crisis with multiple participants and that everyone will get their gripes  and grunts sorted and go back to having some fun _because that's why we come here_.

    Right?

    Orcadius

Prince of the seas, lord of the oceans! Orcadius opposes the Golden Scorpion, not because of any positive feeling for the modern world, but because he seeks to conquer it himself!
Orcadius has an undersea base, not especially loyal minions (primarily due to his habit of feeding "failures" to his "Orcas" - actually, tiger sharks, as he hasn't managed to get Orcas to attack people). His major problem is that he isn't actually that smart, he's not a real mastermind, he just has a knack for getting people to do what he says, including captive scientists.
Orcadius does have good underwater tech, and his minions are competent, but his plans often leave something to be desired.
Orcadius looks like a man in a stylized, high tech deep sea suit, shaped to look like a Killer Whale, or Orca. Which is exactly what it is.

He spouts monologues that are complete cliches about dangerous dames and goons looking to outfit him with cement shoes or give him permanent lead poisoning. He isn't impervious to attacks, and is often roughed up and knocked out cold, but his injuries are always minor and he bounces back quickly, usually after a stiff shot of bourbon. He can scrap with best of them, throwing haymakers or blasting away with his .45, but he has a serious weakness for femme fatale type villains.

I admit, when I put up dropzone I had kind of missed the tongue in cheek 'any resemblance' bit. I am actually thinking of filling out  Kinematic's Group for my games so I figured this would be a good place to put up an idea or two.
Then I realized I missed a part of the theme
Still, for my own records, let me add...

    Doctor Revelation
Riza Mendoza was born Philippines though she did some college in the United States. She proved to be a talented biologist, and had a fascination with genetics. She hoped to learn what she could to return to her home country and help one day reduce birth defects. She knew OF mutants, of course, but rather than finding them offensive or frightening ,she found them fascinating. She even wondered what it would be like to be one?
It turned out, she was.  At least, she showed up on Mutant Detectors. She discovered this back when Genocide was still intact, mutant hunter robots and all! Despite her lack of powers, or even any cosmetic differences the human eye could tell, a Genocide robot in battle with a group of mutants turned and fired on her! She was rescued, and that's how she stumbled upon IMAGE. The mutant terrorists were hardly high ranked in their organization. They were bizarre and strange... and beautiful.
Riza saw them, and knew they were the future. This was like viewing God's dream manifest, infinite genetic diversity in infinite combinations. The trauma of the attack on her had done nothing to manifest her abilities. She knew it normally happened in puberty. She had aged out at a mere twenty five years of age it seemed. The IMAGE folks had little time for her, and she, while skilled, was hardly crucial to their cause as she had no powers to bring so they warned her of GENOCIDE and.. left.
Riza threw herself into genetics with even greater gusto, earning her doctorate, and learning all she could of the cutting edge of the science, even going so far as to learn what she could from the black market of Teleios' techniques. Her own mutation was dormant, but what was dormant could be awakened.  Risking her life, she experimented on herself, and nearly died from the shock to her body. The days after the experiment, she realized she had triumphed! Her mutant powers were hardly earth shaking, but they were there. She was strong, she was agile! She felt full of energy, and indeed, her body was now athletic and toned. Of course, it was also covered in green fur. GLORIOUS green fur all over her body, soft and sleek. Her eyes were of a lovely radiant red. Further study would soon show she had also extended her lifespan, but by how much she didn't know.
By the time she had done all this, GENOCIDE was gone, the IHA arose to take its place, and sadly, IMAGE seemed to be dust. Then she heard of Kinematic. of his call, and his crusade. He sought out allies, but she? She found him! While now more nimble than a howler monkey and stronger than an elephant, Dr. Riza's greatest power remained her intellect and scientific skill. It was no trouble for her to salvage and improve a mutant tracker of her own. And she had an offer for Kinematic no other could give him.
"So many of our brothers and sisters are sleeping, merely having dreams that they're homo sapiens sapiens. I can awaken them from that sleep, show them who they really are. Let me work with you, and we will help them embrace the same Revelation I have. In time, I'll get you your army!"
Kinematic was no fool. He dubbed her Dr. Revelation, and put her to work.
The experiments don't always work. Indeed, there is a chance of death during the operation for any dormant mutant, and they don't always gain combat ready powers. Mutants come in great and small, after all. But Doctor Revelation continues to refine her work. One day, she'll have a high success rate, and every volunteer who wants to wake up to their true potential will make it! When the numbers shift, the old human men clinging to the past will finally be overwhelmed by the many children of a bright and diverse mutant future!

(And to fit in better this time, there's obviously NO resemblance to Beast/Dark Beast, or even a redeyed Mister Sinister because Doctor Revelation is GREEN and a lady. Totally different, go away Marvel Legal team)

    Ruby of Fire
Kyra Azar is a pyrokinetic from Iran. She cannot create fire, only control it, but that control is wide spread. Because of this, she is almost always on missions involving wildfires and the like, for she can, with a brief moment of concentration, snuff out it out over a square kilometer! She much prefers that to making fire hotter, or using it as a weapon for she's a gentle soul.
Despite her power, or perhaps because of it, Kyra has some problems. She finds her own home government oppressive, and is often torn between protesting it and risking her family being hunted down or imprisoned, or defecting, and risking the same. To placate the government and not make a fuss, she dresses in a hijab, though she sympathizes with those who have spurned it. Unbeknownst to most, she is also in a lesbian relationship with an American UNTIL agent who is not a believer (Which is a triple offense to some). Were this to be found out, it would certainly mean her forced return to Iran, or put all she loves at risk.

    Dropzone
Daria Bowsman is a former military brat who was raised on patriotic high ideals as she was carted in her childhood and early teens base to base, place to place, all over the world. She actually considered joining the military herself, mostly to follow the family legacy, even going as far as learning how to shoot guns when most other girls were more concerned with make up and Boy Bands.  When her powers first surfaced, Daria was not alone. She teleported herself and several students by accident  to the roof of the school, an incident that resulted in one panicked peer going off the ledge and breaking a leg. Daria had been outed as a 'filthy mutie'. The rancor stunned her! While it would be folly to say her life was free of discrimination, she had bought hook like and sinker the lessons her parents had told her about how everyone on base , regardless of beliefs, skin color, or creed, was an American just like her. Apparently, this acceptance ended with mutantcy. She saw the disgust in her father's eyes, and the fear in her mothers. And her parents said she would be going away where they could.. fix her, and make sure she didn't hurt anyone else. With visions of experimental labs or isolated cells... Daria vanished, reappeared a mile away, and kept on going.

That was several years ago. During which Daria traveled the world under her own power, and did what she had to do to survive. Some of her actions would have put her in the supervillain category, or even super mercenary, but it all felt so empty. Her idealism had been shattered, but the shards of it, the need to believe in something to have worth, lingered and cut. Then, at age twenty one, she ran into Kinematic. He had heard of a teleporting woman who worked as a smuggler among other things. He explained to her she was not alone though she had been mislead. There was no unity possible between the super powered and the norms; the latter would always fear the former. It was Us Vs Them. But the mundanes had a lot of advantages, numbers, tech, and more. He could use her help.

Where once there was Patriotism, now came ideas of Mutant Supremacy. Whether you hate the mundanes or not wasn't the point, Mutants were at war, a war they didn't ask for, but they had to finish as the victors. The only other options were slavery or genocide. Daria took on the code name Dropzone, recognizing that her chief use for the team would be as transport for the loyal. She can, after all, teleport quite a few people well over a mile at a time, or just herself with greater rapidity and reaction time. She's also learned tricks, like teleporting a bullet so it comes from a different direction or bypasses a barrier. She's even reversed the attacks of others at her back at the attackers. The fact she speaks three languages besides her own (to varying degrees of fluency) and understands some other cultures better also comes in useful. But she has no illusions; it's her powers that make her worthwhile. Oddly, her teleportation always makes targets feel as if they're falling even when they aren't. Yet another reason she took the name "Dropzone"

Complaints, complaints.  The burning in your eyes and the throbbing headache will pass when you finish your entry.  It's supposed to be a challenge, and so it is.

So here's my take on him:

Mangorilla's latest rampage had been going on for about ten minutes when the first superhero showed up on the scene.  The big ape-man had snatched a police car off the ground and was just starting to swing it down on the pair of officers who'd been crouched behind it when a streak of color flashed by.  A pair of red-gloved hands wrenched his improvised weapon loose in passing, setting it down gently as the super touched down a few yards away.  Staggering, the furious villain wheeled around...and stopped cold in surprise as he saw his opponent.

"Who the hell are you?" Mangorilla grunted, a sneer spreading across his bestial features.

"Hadn't really decided on that yet, but it didn't seem like the right time to worry about a supranym with lives in danger.  Let's just say I'm the guy who's going to put you back in jail."

"Ha!  Big talk, but I suppose you have to be pretty gutsy just to go out in public like that!"

    "Seriously?  You're going with that?"

"Better get used to it until you get a better tailor.  What were you thinking with that costume?  I thought the Particolored Man was an eyesore, but you - I'll be doing you a favor beating you senseless before the news crews show up so you're not caught on camera like that."

The newcomer sighed as Mangorilla leapt forward, furry fists swinging - and then he stepped forward, delivered a single efficient uppercut and stepped aside as the unconscious brute collapsed in an untidy heap.

"Well, that could have gone worse." he thought as the police advanced warily.  "He should be out for a while, officers.  If you want I can deliver him somewhere?"

"Uh, no, we've got backup on the way with a containment truck and lifting equipment." the sergeant replied.  He looked askance at the unfamiliar super.  "You new at this?  I don't recognize you and that costume's...uh...pretty distinctive."

The hero sighed again.  "Yes, this is my first time in public.  Went through some MONITOR training when I realized I had powers, and they did a lot of testing before they figured out what I could do exactly."

"Well, MONITOR knows their stuff, but...did they talk to you about, y'know, PR and stuff?  That stuff's pretty important for you supers in the long run."

"This is about the costume, isn't it?"

The sergeant's partner desperately smothered a laugh.  "Well, you have to admit it's...pretty colorful.  Wait, is this one of those alien super-suit deals where you get your powers from it?  Like that schoolteacher back in the Seventies?  I didn't mean to..."

"No, it's not quite that simple.  But MONITOR told me not to talk about it too much, so..."

At that moment a news van squealed to a halt nearby, the cameraman leaping out with his rig already running.  As he swept the camera around the scene he froze as the most garishly-dressed super he'd ever seen came into his viewfinder.  And laughed.  A dark-haired reporter kicked his shin as she advanced, microphone in hand.  "Hello there. I'm Mary Morgan from TV12 news and I'd like an interview.  I'm afraid I don't recognize you, sir.  May I ask what your supranym is for the viewers at home?"

The hero restrained a sigh this time and looked down at his brilliantly-colored outfit, complete with that godawful belt buckle logo and the fake muscles.  Well, fine, he'd known this going to be a problem, so he might as well lean into it.  Besides, he'd always liked his dad's ZZ Top albums.

"Well, ma'am, you can just call me the Sharp-Dressed Man."

Mitch Salvatore discovered he had superpowers on Halloween night.  It was a complete accident.  His parents had never celebrated the holiday and he'd grown up without all the costumes and trick-or-treating and pumpkin-carving stuff.  But when a co-worker invited him to costume party on October 31st he'd thrown together a lame superhero costume using some gym shorts, a towel for a cape and a stupid lightning logo pinned to his chest just to fit in.  That turned out to be fortunate when a couple of muggers jumped him (and his date the Sexy Librarian) on the way to the party.  The first one broke three fingers when he punched Mitch in the nose (which remained very unbroken) and the second one broke his flip knife on that stupid paper logo like it was hardened steel.  Mitch was surprised but not dumb, and discovered he could pick two grown men up and knock their heads together without a struggle.  Also had to be careful about not cracking his girlfriend's ribs when he gave her a triumphant hug afterward.

It was much later that night he discovered his powers vanished when he was naked, but that's between him and the Sexy Librarian.  They also didn't seem to work when he showered and dressed the next day - until he tried pinning on his "cape" again, and then he was stronger than normal but not on par with last night, and he still nicked himself shaving.

Thoroughly confused, he called a 900 number for MONITOR's "superpower breakout" hotline, and within a few hours he was enrolled in their testing and training program while their experts tried to figure things out.  It wasn't long before they decided he had what they called a "psychosomatic power set" that was tied to some element of his subconscious and how it regarded his current wardrobe.  His impromptu Halloween costume had granted him "street level" hero abilities, but after some time (well, a lot - months worth) the scientists found he had a lot more potential than just that.  A whole lot more.  They eventually found that his subconscious preformed at absolute optimum when he was wearing...well, look at that image.

It was almost enough to put him off the whole idea of hero work, but MONITOR could be pretty persistent with someone whose peak performance was up in the top 1% of known supers.  Mitch was eventually convinced to "do the right thing" as his trainers put it, and has begun making a name for himself as the Sharp-Dressed Man.  A silly name, and one connected to a ludicrous costume, but he's still doing good deeds and saving people from danger.

The Sharp-Dressed Man is a classic FISS and ranks well up in the top tier in terms of power level when he's in full costume, as well as having the ability to electrify himself at will, with voltages ranging from merely stunning to a full-on lightning bolt.  His outfit is as indestructible as he is, making disrobing him in combat fairly tricky even for those who understand his powers - which are still fairly few.  His extended testing period with MONITOR also led him to getting a lot of training time, so he's quite a bit more clued-in to how the supers community really works than most relative newbies.

That same testing period found that he can manifest weaker but still useful levels of power without the full costume.  A simple belt with that logo grants him about the same street-level strength and toughness as he originally manifested, as well as enough electrical generation to sting, mess up most electronics, jump-start a car or recharge his phone, although he can't fly.  Adding a domino mask almost doubles his durability and physical strength as well as speeding his reaction time, and accessorizing with red gloves (even less tacky ones) help even more.  No matter how "dressed" he is he can't seem to fly without the tights and boots, and he's not great at it unless in the full costume.

Perhaps not the most serious of concepts, but it's way better than getting random powers from a rotary phone dial many readers today will never have seen.

Hopefully it stays active for more than a few cycles this time around.  Going back through old posts it's been through rather a lot of hiatuses over the years.

Thanks to everyone for their takes on the pic and the quick responses. So good to see this thread active again after being dormant for a time.

While I really liked the detail and world building of Rich McGee's entry I am going to go with wcw43921 as the winner. Guess I am just a sucker for a tragic backstory.
