Dune part 2. Nothing is perfect, but this version is my favorite adaptation of the book. In my opinion, this is better than the Star Wars science fiction franchise. It is a beautiful spectacle showing the dangers of hero worship, which could enable corruptible people into positions of power, who could become tyrants who kill billions of people.

I have just attended the San Diego Comic Convention 2021 Special Edition. It was very fun. This was a smaller than average event, with an estimated 40,000 to 60,000 attendees instead of the 160,000 attendees normal before the pandemic. In my opinion, the smaller size is a positive, because I am a conservative who believes the old days were better. The exhibition hall did not feel clogged, people were not camping to attend panels, and parking beneath the San Diego Convention Center was readily available for those who could arrive by 7 AM.  I attended a panel for Brent Spiner and a panel for Greg and Karen Evans, who make the Luann comic strip.got an autograph from Gigi Edgley, and experienced a Kobayashi Maru moment playing the Artemis Star Trek bridge simulator game.

This is not to encourage more people to attend the Comic Con, but to try the smaller convention instead; smaller conventions could be enormous amounts of fun.

    Dune (Villeneuve version, HBO Max)

Jesus Christ this movie is gorgeous.  Literally every frame is suitable for wall mounting.  Having seen Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, I expected the film to be visually appealing, but I did not stop being blown away until the credits were rolling.

Villeneuve sticks pretty closely to the Lynch script, to the point where the dialogue in certain scenes is identical.  It's a little weird but I was too busy being floored by the visuals to care.  Most of the plot tweaks are improvements, but not all.  You can tell that Villeneuve is struggling with total runtime.  Perhaps the biggest change is that this Paul is really uncomfortable with his role as messiah, which will pay off if they film the next book.

    Anon (Clive Owen/Amanda Seyfried, Netflix)

If you like slow burn, high concept sf, this is the film for you.  In a reality where augmented reality and memory control are built directly into the brain, Clive Owen's police detective character pursues a hacker who can literally control what people see and remember.  And you thought Facebook was evil!  Understated and intimate, this film was a nice surprise.

    Squid Game (Netflix)

I'm a big fan of this genre.  Despite the glaring plot holes, this series remains gripping as we watch some well realized characters work through some truly horrific scenarios.  Unlike the Hunger Games, which was a heavy handed allegory of our relationship with the media, Squid Game is a heavy handed allegory of late stage capitalism.

    Scott Lang: Awesome.
Clint Barton: Awesome, if less fun.
    Hank Pym: Flawed.
    Odin: Well...
    Thanos: Okay wait
    Ego: STAHP

I love Dune Part 1.  It has visual spectacle, a great Hans Zimmer score, solid acting, and tells a complex story of many characters without becoming an info dump or confusing. I recommend people to watch it in IMAX, and hope enough see it so the producers greenlight a Dune Part 2

Finally had a chance to watch The Suicide Squad.  It was a fun ride that didn't take itself too seriously while still sticking to concept. They managed the character background well, the violence was well choreographed and the plot was coherent and believable. As long as you go in expecting an action comedy, you won't be disappointed. 8/10.

I'm not watching the inauguration. If there's a violent uprising or an assassination attempt, I don't need to see that.

I take a different perspective on the issue of a pardon. What Donald Trump is being prosecuted for in New York has nothing to do with his activities as President. In his election campaign and his capacity as President, Trump used the rhetoric of hatred and fear to deliberately exacerbate divisions within America. He appointed his cronies to positions of authority, lied to the American people on numerous occasions, subverted the law and the Constitution, and abused his power. He did all this for personal gain and to pave the way for an authoritarian regime.

And Trump still nearly succeeded in hoodwinking a majority of Americans into voting him back in. He failed due to his own incompetence and to the timing of a global health crisis. But his approach still netted him great success, which another may be tempted to emulate in future, maybe someone smarter and more capable than Donald Trump. To dissuade the next would-be dictator there needs to be a clear example of severe consequences for trying and failing. And maybe bringing the facts of his actions to light during prosecution might sway at least some of the people under his spell.

It is possible that Trump could remain politically influential if he loses the Presidency. However, he faces economic ruin from the many lawsuits against him, his failing businesses, and debt to Deutche Bank; he could be jailed from criminal accusations against him; and Twitter has censored him and could deplatform him in the near future. If he loses, he could be done.

America, like other countries, has an angry, politically active populist faction. Even without Trump, it is still there. How can we heal from this pandemic and our sectarian rage, to learn how to act with common sense and common decency? In the past, the human race has faced plagues and chaos and overcome them. I believe we can calm down, and work together to create a better world.

Trump proclaimed an "invasion" of dangerous criminal immigrants. He warns of the upcoming presidential election being stolen through massive vote fraud. He claims that "leftists" are violently trying to destroy the American way of life. The idea of Trump attempting to prevent a panic is logically insupportable, as it would be completely opposite to his established pattern of behavior.

No apology needed. You didn’t do this. That was my point. I’m just tired of living a nightmare and not sleeping because I’m raising my daughter in the United States. We need better and we should be doing better, and yet “things” keep holding us back. All the posts I’m writing are heavily edited, partially to prove to myself I can do it, and largely because I know screaming about it won’t get me anywhere. SO.

I appreciate the thought, and for the record, I accept your apology in the way it was intended, but no need.

Reports that the Trump campaign plan for losing is to say the election was fraudulent, then tell State Legislatures in states with Republican majorities to ignore the votes and appoint Republican Electors to the College.

The Constitution does say that Electors get chosen how the State Legislature decides (Governors might not even get a veto). That said, it also says the Federal Government can pass laws that overrule that. And we DO have those laws. I'll look them up later.
