I’ve also decided that I’ll allow a set maneuver in HtH combat.  A character is sacrificing a full phase in hopes of gaining a +1 to hit in the next phase.  If the enemy moves out of melee combat before the next phase that’s just the gamble the character takes.

This project is an extension of an export template I wrote a few months ago.  I had so much fun writing that template that I decided to develop a full app.

    Features
Import characters from Hero Designer using this export template Characteristics and Skills may be long pressed and a check will be made Dice rolling tools (3d6, Hit, Damage, and Free Form)  The H.E.R.O. tool generates random 250 point 5e supers (shout out to Cassandra for allowing me to use her original idea) Track statistics about your die rolls, including average values, distribution, total stun etc.
This is still very much a work in progress and I have plans to add more features as time goes on.  For now though I feel that it’s mature enough to release to the general public.

Feedback is always welcome either here or at phil.guinchard@gmail.com

Edsel reacted to Lord Liaden in Necromancy-based Presence Attacks
Many "undead" in Hero System publications have been built using the Automaton rules -- skeletons, zombies, mummies, and the like. Automatons as their default ignore mind-affecting abilities like Mental Powers or Presence Attacks, since they lack consciousness and free will, i.e. "minds" in the conventional sense.

This Complication means that Presence Attacks which are defined as some form of Necromancy (spell or innate magical power) will affect undead Automatons, substituting the Automaton's Intelligence score for Ego since they lack an Ego score. What counts as Necromancy in a given campaign is up to the campaign's Game Master to decide, although it usually includes magic spells defined as affecting undead.

You may notice that published Hero Games robotic Automatons have a comparable Complication, "Affected by Cyberkinesis," which is the technological analogue to Necromancy for that purpose.

First off.  If any of my players are reading this thread.  STOP.

I am afraid that I have done very little conversion work.  Our D&D 5E group became disillusioned with all the shenanigans going on with the publishers and community.  We then reverted back to AD&D 2E with an all new campaign, but that only lasted a few sessions before some of the younger members in our group made it know that they really didn't like the system that much.  So now we transitioned over to Hero System.  At first people attempted to replicate their 1st level D&D characters in Hero which is possible but you end up with some really wonky builds.  After that first attempt I encouraged the players to just keep their background and history and rebuild the characters using the published Hero System sources.  This has worked much better.  The elves used the elf template from Fantasy Hero, the Gnome and Halfling did the same (6-players, 2 elves, 1 gnome, 1 halfling, 2 humans).

Since it is new to most of the group, I started them off in the Village of Hommlet.  In AD&D they made one foray to the moathouse (where one got eaten by a big lizard) and then retreated to regroup.  We transitioned the campaign to Hero system.  Four of the characters kept the same character idea that they had.  One player changed.  And the deceased character was a new build as well.  I have pretty much just gotten the equivlent critters from the Hero System Bestiary where possible and just made a quick build for the few I did not have (Bugbear and Gnoll).  I have even used the Hero System Ghouls even though they lack the paralytic power of the AD&D versions.

So basically I convert as little as I can get away with.  And since most of the group was not familiar with Greyhawk, they do not necessiarly come across as typical Greyhawk characters.  One guy is running a character based on Bell from a certain popular anime.  And then the Complications that players have put on their characters have given me all sorts of material I can use as, well Complications.  I am trying to bring those complications to life using Greyhawk background where possible.  And at least one character is familar with the background and so is essentially running a former Scarlet Brotherhood monk who is being hunted by them as a traitor.

We did not take the concept of alignments into Hero System with us.  Which also means things like "Protection from Evil/Good" are no longer applicable.  For turning undead I have already told the character that wants to be a sort of cleric that most undead take increased effects from PRE attacks by holy men (just needs to profess that is what he is and buy the perk to be a priest).  I did write up this scroll which they may find if they look in the right area.

Scroll: Protection from Undead:  Telekinesis (30 STR), Area Of Effect (3m Radius; +1/4), Persistent (+1/4), Affects Desolidified Any form of Desolidification (+1/2) (90 Active Points); 1 Continuing Charge lasting 20 Minutes which Never Recovers (-2 1/2), Limited Power Only vs Undead and Physical Missiles They Fire (-1 1/2), OAF Fragile (-1 1/4), No Range (-1/2)

Probaby need to add Requires Light (-1/4) to that as well but since it is a consumable magic item I am not very concerned about the Real Point cost.

I guess magic items and spells from AD&D are about the only thing I have done significant work on.  If I can replicate the Greyhawk item or spell I do so.  If I can't then I just substitue something of similar worth that can be built in Hero System or taken from the published sources.

Merely pleased with myself for coming up with this so I thought I would post. The party is currently in Hommlet and will be eventually procceding onto the Temple of Elemental Evil. The game system is Hero (Fantasy Hero), so basically I have converted the AD&D modules into Hero System.  I will preface by saying that the character said they have no idea about the birthmark and left the specifics up to me.  They were also leaving the deal about attracting people who think she is a "chosen one" of some sort up to me.  I think they rolled up a random background using the "Heroes of Legend" book (an OOP generic suplement produced by Task Force games in the distant past).  The player still doesn't know what the birthmark means or who these weirdos are that are following her around.
    • Distinctive Feature: Alchemical symbol on arm (Easily Concealed; Is Noticed and Recognized) [5-points]. This has the ability to change. It is currently an eastern (in our world Chinese) alchemical symbol for mushrooms. It is often a harbinger of what ever the current plot is. The mushrooms are fungi and therefore a part of the domain of Zuggtmoy (Demoness Lady of Fungi). She is sealed in the Temple of Elemental Evil and perhaps Kaitra will be instrumental in freeing her.
    • Hunted: Religious Zealots Frequently (Less Pow; PC has a Public ID or is otherwise very easy to find; Watching; There are lots of them) [7-points]. A group of 4 zealots have wandered into town while the part is away at the Moathouse. When they arrive back in Hommlet they may cause a scene. “Your eminence! Show us the way!” Every week from this point forward in Hommlet 1d6 more pilgrims will arrive, it will eventually cause issues with the townsfolk. They are devotees of Zuggtmoy (Demoness Lady of Fungi), whether they are sober enough to realize it or not. (They eat funny mushrooms).
Her birthmark became more defined and prominent in the last month or so. It had been rather indistinct but now it is a symbol that means mushrooms (a fungi). I got the symbol from here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhi_(excrescences). Since Zuggtmoy is sealed within the depths of the temple our unsuspecting character may somehow be the key to releasing the demon, or further sealing them, or whatever. I will go with whatever fits the narrative at the time. The nice thing about this "birthmark" is that it can change to attract a different group of cultists at a later date. For instance, once the ToEE is dealt with perhaps a symbol of fire or ice when they move on to something like "Against the Giants."

In reply to the original post. 30 APs for 1st level spells, and (imo) +15 APs per level thereafter is a good place to start when breaking down spells into tiers. It's what I typically use.
In an attempt to provide another example for you before I go off on a tangent, while also keeping it within the AP limit: I present the following very shady, but legal in CC/FHC, power construct.

Sanctuary as a 1st-level Clerical Spell   Change Environment: Requires an EGO roll at -1 to attack a single designated target within range, Long Lasting (1 Minute) (7 base Active Points)
Area of Effect (1m Radius; +1/4), Megascale (Whole Planet, 1m = 10,000km; +2) (23 Active Points); Limited Range (10m; -0), Instant (-1/4), Conditional Power (Effect ends if the designated target performs a hostile action; -1), Gestures (-1/4), Incantations (-1/4), IAF Expendable ("Small Silver Mirror" Fragile, Difficult to Obtain; -1).
    Total Cost: 6 points

Explanation: The rules for Change Environment in CC/FHC allow it to require an affected character to make a roll at the listed penalty. Nowhere in the power is it defined what the penalty for failure is, leaving it up to the GM to decide what is fair based upon the type of roll being made. Since EGO rolls are used to resist temptations, an EGO roll to attack the cleric/spellcaster seems reasonable, as it is very tempting to kill the healer/glass cannon first if possible.
The base active point value of the power would be 3 APs before Adders, and the standard range would be 15m. Limited Range makes this spell's range equal to that of 5e Sanctuary. However, since this modifier normally requires you reduce the range by at least 1/2, and we are only reducing it by 1/3, it's value in this case is -0.
The Long Lasting adder makes the duration equal to that of 5e Sanctuary, and since you cannot maintain it via concentration it also takes the Instant modifier so that the power is no longer Constant.
Area of Effect and Megascale as purchased allows the spell to affect the attacker regardless of distance (or as close to it as HERO system can get), as per 5e Sanctuary.

This version of the spell is written with the common limitations described in the 5e version of the spell. Gestures and Incantations obviously represent the somatic and verbal components, and the foci is built as an IAF because having a small mirror doesn't obviously provide the benefits indicated by the spell. Mirrors are fairly easy to break, ergo why it is Fragile. Moreover you have to purchase them from a craftsman, you can't just go collect them in a cave like you can with bat guano, ergo why it is Difficult to Obtain.

Normally a spell like this would be harder to resist (have a higher EGO roll penalty) if you have a higher primary spellcasting stat, but I simply couldn't think of a good way to work that into the power construct. However CSLs could be used to improve it (as per adding damage) at the rate of plus -1 to EGO Rolls per 9.75 APs (or 4 CLS used to increase Damage/Effect), so characters that would normally have high "Primary Spellcasting Stats" should be encouraged to instead purchase an appropriate number of such CSLs.

    *Steps up to Soapbox*
You will find that some spells simply cannot be accurately converted into HERO while staying within an Active Point limit. This is because Active points versus Real points are not concepts which apply to how spells are tiered in DnD's spellcasting system. Instead spells are tiered largely depending upon when the designers wanted certain types of characters to gain access to certain spells, and how often they think casters should be able to use them, and not at all based upon how powerful those spells actually are.
This is why Animate Dead might be a 3rd level Cleric spell, and a 4th level Wizard spell, even though the mechanics of the spell don't change. Or why standard Invisibility is usually a 2nd level spell, even though it can be built on the same APs as many far less useful 1st level spells. This is also why certain low-level spells (like Protection from Evil) make you completely immune to powers used by certain high level creatures (like a Succubus).
Moreover, the scaling nature of many spell's effects, and the existence of metamagic feats in certain editions complicate the matter further. For example, a 1st level wizard's Magic Missile isn't nearly as useful as one cast by a 9th level wizard. For another example, one Metamagic feat might improve damage scaling, another might remove a common limitation (like gestures or incantations), or add a small advantage (like transdimensional), and another doesn't really change anything about the spell at all beyond it's special effect. Yet all of these feats will have the same opportunity cost of one feat and increasing an affected spell's level by one tier.
    *Steps down from Soapbox*

I've been thinking on this for a while, so I hope it was helpful.
