In my current campaign (and a previous one) the player's provided very detailed backstories.  In the current campaign one of the character has a kindly grandmother, the only one in his large family that encouraged him to become a bard and learn to weave magic with his spells.  I immediately decided she was the villain and most of the rest of the family were villains as well.  The character's father was a piece of work, but he was trying to get his son to escape (run away) because he knew about grandma.  Grandma is a high priestess of one of the evil god's in the world.  It took almost a year for the players and their characters to find/figure out who was behind all the troubles.

I am looking at the cost of spells in the Grimoire 6th edition and I understand that, but specifically I don't understand some options.  On page 182 Create Skeleton it costs 9 xp to buy this spell which Creates one Skeleton, but only costs 20 to Create a Skeleton Army?  What am I missing?  Do they need to be controlled with a spell?  I seen there is a spell called Control Undead, but that was a Mind Control.

    Any help would be appreciated.

One thing I would suggest, if you don't want them to know this NPC is devilish, don't name him "Deimos." Not hard to guess from that. 😈

Patron/villain who's also a devil? That kind of implies that any plot would probably be a deception on his part, maybe appearing as something good that's ultimately evil. Couple of things that come to mind:

The PCs are recruited by Deimos (using that name for now) to bring down a thieves/assassins guild controlling the underworld in the city. This guild is actually a rival to Deimos's own ambitions which he wants out of his way.

A malevolent cult draws magical powers from an unholy artifact, and Deimos sends the PCs to track it down and destroy it. Unknown to them the artifact also blocks more of Deimos's kind from entering this world.

If that's the sort of thing you're looking for, I'll try to come up with other suggestions. If not, if you could further define your intentions we can try again. 🙂

Pick up "And a Ten Foot Pole" it is for Rolemaster, but it has so much gear, equipment and everything you would need.  Might be hard to find but worth the money.  It also separates all equipment by Age (stone, medevil, Iron) etc.

Well I went with the Necromancy idea.  They were called into a conference with the various kingdoms who were taking the brunt of the fighting.  They said that these warriors would not pick up the dead from the battles.  As they snuck around behind enemy lines they found dead soldiers laid out in large groups.  They kept going and it was cool because they didn't understand.  Then they got to the enemies lands and seen very poor people and seen the ritual of the necromancer and they kind of pooped themselves when they realized all the solders that would be summoned.

Thanks for the help I appreciate it, my group did as well.

That’s more of a game-time control than a construction control.  For construction of abilities, you can change how HD handles END in general, but not for a specific ability/type of power (beyond what is specified in the rules).

Gandalf970 reacted to Gnome BODY (important!) in Holding actions (to interrupt spells)
And I don't feel that deliberately refusing to engage with the topic the OP wants to discuss when they have a question on the grounds that there might be houserules or nonstandard methodologies when the OP suggests standard methodologies and mentions no houserules is constructive.  In fact, I think it's extremely rude to the OP and has no place in a thread where they're looking for rules answers.

Do you have a single iota of evidence that such is the case in OP's game, given their explicit mention of "gestures or incantations" as a trigger for an attack?

You might want to reread some Fantasy Hero books, because Gestures and/or Incantations is in fact the base condition.
  17. Thanks

    No problem.
I don't think rewording the question would help, alas.  A number of users on this forum don't care if you want RAW.  They want to theorycraft and be inventive and that's great, but not when somebody's asking about the rules as they're written or a particular construct.

    Emphasis mine.

Hugh- (and naturally I could be wrong) but the RAW GB(!) quoted to me meant that if you hit a wizard no matter the limitations, if his spell requires an attack roll and you stun him, then the spell stops working. So a shield spell? No it works though I do believe that if you get to act first, you get to hit before the spell fires off. The toad spell? If you stun him then it doesn’t fire off.

As others have said, it will depend on how you want your magic system to work. Concentration, Gestures, and Incantations all have rules for interrupting Powers with those Limitations. You could use Limited Power: Interruptible (-0) to give the same effect without any of the other drawbacks.

Barring any of those (or similar) Limitations, the only way to interrupt a spell is for the interrupter to have an appropriate Dispel, with a held action.

It's important to remember that Hero is a toolkit system. The game mechanics for Pulsar's power blasts and Talisman's Hellfire are the same (Blast, 12d6). You can't interrupt Talisman just because, "It's magic."

This is absurd.  Gandalf970 asked a very straight-forward question with a very straight-forward answer and nobody's managed to even touch on it.

    @Gandalf970 Reference FREDp296, FREDp297, 6E1p381

All that's needed to disrupt casting is to land an attack that's not totally negated by defenses.  A single point of STUN or other such effect is enough to cancel the entire spell.
The procedure thus becomes holding one's action until the caster casts, winning the DEX vs DEX roll to act first when the caster casts, hitting, and dealing any damage.  This negates the spell, with nothing the caster can do at this point.

6E's Fantasy Hero contains text on page 165 that indicates Gestures and Incantations begin at the start of the Segment, and thus holding until the caster's DEX and the DEX vs DEX roll are unnecessary, making the process even easier.  Just go first on that Segment and hit them.

Gandalf970 reacted to Scott Ruggels in Holding actions (to interrupt spells)
In most D&D spells you have Concentration, and material components. A lack of either will cause the spell to fail.  So in Hero terms, a D&D spell needs Concentration (Ego roll, often) and needs a consumable Focus or charges to represent the material components.  Now, Hero being an open system, you can pick and choose what limitation one's own magic system will be.  Pile enough limitations on a spell, and you can create hugely powerful effects, for not much cost in terms of "real points".  The downside is that  anything targeting those limitation, will cause the whole edifice to crumble.  The fun things for me, was to build spell systems that reflected the cultures they arose from, this gave magic distinct regional flavor. Don't be too timid, Play around a little and find something you like.

Gandalf970 reacted to Ninja-Bear in Holding actions (to interrupt spells)
Gandalf970 since you have a Hero system Grimore, look at the limitations on the Spells. Those for those Spells tell you how to interrupt a spell. For example, is there a OAF involved? Disarm the Foci from the Caster. Incantations? Choke or Choke Hold works nicely or a Darkness Field (silence) works too. Gestures? Grab those arms!  Note if a spell has all three limitations, you only need to interrupt one to stop the spell. That’s why they get a big discount on the spells.  Our group targets the first fool who mumbles “unga bunga” that works too! 😁
