  1. Re: The Professions of Arms Just wanted to post some thoughts and hope I'm not going off the direction of the topic. If there is any amount of down time between adventures characters could be allowed to role their PS to see if they made any money using their skills. Like (Every point under skill roll x weeks of downtime)x 10 gold or something. Characters who have the same PS skills get along better. A PS Theif may be the only person in the party able to talk a group of other theives from killing them. A PS Barbarian may be the only party member that gains the respect of a barbarian tribe they run into. I'm new here so ignore me if this is trash
  2. Re: Recommended power level Start and Max K.S., I've been looking over your website, it's a great source! I've been thinking a lot about how I would handle magic and all your magic conversions and style analyzations come in real handy, thanks. On the combat levels thing -- Every 3 DEX gives you +1 OCV So going from 10 DEX to 20 DEX gives you +4 OCV in Hero In D20 Going from 10 DEX to 20 DEX gives you +5 to hit (range) and Armor class So wouldn't this make the conversion of combat levels a little closer? Sorry I keep bringing this up, it's realy not important because I have a good idea of how powerful I want characters to be, but the 5 to 1 conversion thing is bugging me
  3. Re: Recommended power level Start and Max I see your points.
  4. Re: Recommended power level Start and Max If converting BAB 20 it would be. 6.6 instead of 4 ....
  5. Re: Recommended power level Start and Max Interesting posts guys. Shrike, Base Attack Bonus (BAB) / 5 = +1 CSL of appropriate type seems a little much doesn't it? I mean in D20 +5 is a big deal and someone with +5 to hit over someone else is at a big advantage. But +1OCV over someone else is closer to an even fight. Wouldn't it be closer to: Base Attack Bonus 3 = +1 CSL So roughly a 20th level fighter (BAB 20 + STR and feats to hit) would be around 12 or 13 OCV in Hero (7 combat levels + CV). And that's if he puts all his CLs in OCV and none in DCV.
  6. Re: Recommended power level Start and Max Great posts guys, thanks for the feedback. Right now I'm looking at an CV starting range of 6-8 but the best fighters in the the world not having much higher than 11 to 13. I really want to have that feeling of growth over time that other systems give on attack values. Luke Skywalker's 5D blaster skill compared to Boba Fett's 9D Blaster is a cool range, but when I look at a lot of Hero writeups most charactes have the same +2 to +3 with combat -- which seems kinda dull. My PCs will be in a world where several factions are at war and each faction will have their legendary heroes to go up against, so that is why I want to figure out up front who are the heavy hitters and just how powerful they are.
  7. Re: Recommended power level Start and Max Thats GREAT! thanks! Question ... why limit OCV to 9?
  8. Do any of you have campaign guidelines for attack power / defense power / skill rolls with start range and max limits? I'm starting a fantasy group (actually restarting a group and jumping over to Hero rules) and could use some help on starting limits and growth of the characters. I would also be interested in seeing some of your character's combat levels and how high you would allow an OCV/DCV to get. Thanks!
  9. Re: Altering rules: d20 style skill rolls? Rapier, yes it's a misunderstanding. I am well aware of all the rules that you laid out. I know the system. It IS just replacing a mechanic with a mechanic, and at the end of my post I said it's just to change the "feel" I'm just asking if this change will cause problems I'm not seeing. The points spent in my chart are exactly what you would spend in a normal progression.
  10. Hi this is my first time post and I'm coming back to the hero system after using d20 for several years now. I used 4th edition quite a bit back in the day and always felt that Hero had the best rules for combat, damage, and all around ability to create any character. but the one thing I never really liked was the skill rolls, 8-, 11-, 14- I was thinking of keeping the rules "as is" when it comes to point spending but skills would convert to a d20 style roll. Rolling 3d6 plus your skill vs a difficulty number like many other games do. 1 point = +1 rank 3 points = +2 ranks 5 points = +4 ranks 7 points = +6 ranks Characteristics would give a bonus number just as d20 does, so 14 Dex is +2 to dex skill rolls, 16 is +3 and so on. So a character with 16 Dex and 5 points in Acrobatics would have Acrobatics +7 Do any of you long time experts see any problems developing with this? Or are there any similar house rules you can link me to that have already been developed? It's mainly for changing the feeling of the game. Thanks!
