  1. Exhaustion. I hadn't remembered what that was like again until this week. And to think, that's how things were for years with toddlers. Ah the days of requiring multiple cups of coffee in the morning AND a tripleshot espresso in the afternoon just to function... hopefully I'm not THAT bad again.
  2. I'd go so far as to permit Trump to be Emperor. Just like Emperor Norton. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Norton
  3. I ... maybe shouldn't read news sometimes. I just wanted to say that. When news from particular corners of the world leaves me... well, "sad" is one way to put it... but I'm not even sure if my computer gaming hobby can REALLY take my mind off it. I'm trying to be oblique, here. Usually I can shrug it off. Not sure why I'm having trouble today.
  4. Well. I'll just say this - I hadn't actually realized he was still alive, for whatever that says about anything. I believe I remember some Monty Python lines involving his name. Actually... song... oh yes. I own a copy of The Final Ripoff, fond memories of listening to that CD. Lyrics Henry Kissinger How I'm missing yer You're the Doctor of my dreams With your crinkly hair and your glassy stare And your machiavellian schemes I know they say that you are very vain And short and fat and pushy but at least you're not insane Henry Kissinger How I'm missing yer And wishing you were here Henry Kissinger How I'm missing yer You're so chubby and so neat With your funny clothes and your squishy nose You're like a German parakeet All right so people say that you don't care
  5. I wish people wouldn't use that kind of rhetoric. Re: Tucker Carlson's quote above. At least I can wish.
  6. I seem to remember something about funding the rest of the federal government being Congress' responsibility. Or am I misremembering? It's hard to tell these days...
  7. The only thing i have to say is... a quote from a song... well maybe two songs... "Come on ride the train, hey ride it" - quad city DJs, apparently And from the KLF - "Last train to Trancentral" - "All aboard, all aboard, whoa (Come on, boy, do you wanna ride?) All aboard, all aboard, whoa" I'm sure there are more train songs. But these are what came to mind.
  8. At least that's something. Not sure why it popped back up in my head today and I had to check on it, but it did.
  9. Came here to mention that I had to re-check and yes, Ron DeSantis keeps supporting his "slit throats day one" comment and doesn't seem likely to retract it. This is a contender for the Presidency? I can't even...
  10. Rest in peace. Yeah, she seemed kind of timeless, but then, I was surprised when Jack Lalanne passed, too. (And that was ... wow... 2011.)
  11. I wish I had good answers/suggestions for avoiding... such things. I suspect it will take all sorts of steps that eventually gel together to reduce the numbers. Not every country on earth has such events. So... why is that? /rhetorical?
  12. I heard on NPR that there have been fairly few elections of Speaker of the House that had to have multiple votes... but hey... plus/minus maybe?... at least it wasn't MONTHS like one time. The House last struggled to elect a speaker 100 years ago. Here's what happened : NPR The Longest and Most Contentious Speaker Election in House History | US House of Representatives: History, Art & Archives 1856 - two MONTHS.
  13. My condolences to the family and friends and all others who knew him in person/directly.
  14. Good thoughts and a hope for a full recovery.
  15. A reread I'm doing through is the Night Watch / Day Watch series of books by Sergei Lukyanenko
  16. It's not as though Trump himself is what I would call a "principled conservative". We're not talking old-school William F Buckley or George Will style rational/principled conservative here (recently learned he's a "Never Trumper" - I kind of avoided news and politics for a few years, hard to believe, I know given those who know me of old). Even if Trump had never been elected to anything, I'd still be thinking he's at least skirted the law quite a lot as a "businessman". Just significantly less dangerous as a TV star than as President. But put me in the "no, don't just blanket pardon him" camp. That would send a very bad message to the NEXT wannabe dictator. Who may not be as ... mercurial/chaotic/unpredictable and may be far more dangerous to democracy because the next one will be both competent and stealthy about it until he's in power. I think there's a real danger of authoritarianism on the rise right now. In any case, the court of public opinion <> courts of law and he's not legally found guilty of anything until proven so in court regardless of what I personally believe may have happened. I do suspect charges are coming, however. I can only hope he gets his days in court.
  17. Sorry, I wasn't quite clear. TS/SCI itself is just a classification of TS, correct. However, what I was trying to say was more along the lines of "A former President or his employees taking TS/SCI documents and storing them at his house in a locked room instead of in a SCIF" is a really really big deal. Yeah, I know, in hindsight I could have been clearer on that. I've been on some other sites with much shorter post limits for a while and it's a harder habit to break than I realized when I'm on a board WITHOUT character count limits again. Thankfully I mostly skipped Twitter but TikTok has been an education in how weird and viral social media is. Trying to cut down on it now... (stupid 150 / 280 character post limits drive me bananas).
  18. Came here to mention this. TS/SCI is a really really big deal. This is not good news for anyone. It's likely to prompt quite a lot of government action in general. BTW if any of you want a good news source, Beau of the Fifth Column on YouTube is pretty fantastic. He's the one who mentioned this for me to see it.
  19. Only thing I have to add is something that was kind of terrifying: a Georgia candidate who lost his Primary wanted to bring back the House Unamerican Activities Committee. I was stunned that anyone would want to resurrect that. I can't even come close to overstating my objection to something like this.
  20. Nothing much really. Kids are growing, work is work. Hard to believe my daughter is starting high school this fall.
  21. Pings thread, only 4 years later. Hi again all!
