  1. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... Alas I don't have a Champions/hero Group at the moment. I'm going to try to start one soon. Recently for me it's been D&D at a recent con and open sessions at a local store or home. Desidario Nikola Cassini, a very socialable drow storm sorcerer who because of his birth defect (light skin) suffered through an early childhood where everyone else was encouraged to kill him. After the collapse ofT the Underdark (the Underground Drow Elf Empire...kind of like the Great Underground Empire, but more cheese) he went to the surface to find that that the people there were just as kind, friendly and open-minded as his brethren from below. The remnants of his family were promptly captured and enslaved by the humans of a coastal city. Nik's parents suffered at the hands of their human slavemasters. His father was sent to die as a slave in the gladitorial arena and his mother due to her exotic looks died a slow death at a brothel. After several attempts as using Nik as a brothel worker failed due to the sudden heart attacks of several clients he was also sent to die in the arenas...but the young elf decided a change of scenery was in order and became a wandering spell-slinger for hire. Of course his time growing up in a brothel did make him a bit saucy at times. Issyk-Kol is a very civilized, urbane, polite, and utterly ruthless mercenary cousin...who is also a sniper rogue (assassin). His experience with the collapse was not quite as harsh as he found it provided great opportunity. Seems the surfacers pay just as well, if not better for his services as an assassin. Some of his usual companions: Elisanada: Elven Bow Ranger. She's a bit cold and hates drow. Lyr: Elven Priest (changes dieties all the time) Bodin: Dwarven Fighter (cliche drinks a lot, axe and shield) Paithan: Eladrin (another elf race) Swordmage Gunther: Human Shaman In Nik's encounters with various adventurers: In a game session where no one wanted to be the speaker for the party: Me: Wait, are you guys telling me I'm the face (i.e. going to make all the social skills)? I hear my kind isn't very popular with the locals. Tiefling Bard in party (forget her name, now she decided to speak up): Never trust a Drow, you should always trust me instead.... Me: Says the half-demon... Elisanada (nearing the end of a fight): You're nothing but a bloodthirsty Drow, you're not an elf! Me: (knocking a bandit out): Oh I'm sorry is that because I'm taking prisoners? Lyr (High Elf Cleric) (OOC): So I heard you retrained when you levelled, what did you take? Me: Nik was always proud of his two-fisted expertise with dual wielding handheld implements, but I decided a change was in order so he went and took Staff Expertise. I mean look, it gives him +1 melee reach. So when he is in hand to hand and needs that little extra distance when wielding his staff. Lyr: ... Elisanada: (long rant about evil Drow raiding, pillaging, etc...) Issyk: You know I'm really sorry that you or your family and friends suffered from those horrid raids and massacres when you were a child. But really I mean to my family that was probably just another Tuesday...or was it a Wednesday? Get over it. Party Paladin (name I forget atm): Ouch I'm pretty hurt, I use Lay on Hands and Touch Myself. Me: That's fine I touch my staff all the time too...did I mention I have extra reach? You look into retraining into that expertise feat as well. DM (as NPC who is looking to hire adventurers): So what do you do? Elisanada: I am a bow Ranger. Bodin: I am an axe and board Warrior. Lyr: I am a Priest. Paithan: Swordmage. Gunder: Shaman Issyk: Troubleshooter. DM: What class is that? Issyk: I see trouble, I shoot it. Hopefully our Cthulhutech and Champions games will get off the ground soon.
  2. Hmmm after I posted on the 6th edition forum I think the post may be more appropriate for here and I couldn't delete the post there so sorry much apologies! Anyway here is my question: ======================== If you recall the western Silverado, there's a scene where Jake (Kevin Costner's character) draws and fires both of his guns are two different targets simultaneously. In Iron Man, Tony uses his armor to specifically target multiple terrorists who are using refugees as human shields and he takes them all down in one salvo. Okay...how do you do that in Hero? For that matter how do you multiple independent targeting? In the past we've tried Area Affect Hexes and called it a special effect, with a kicker of increased area if needed and custom limitation (does not effect intervening squares, etc...) but it was kind of clunky. In the case of a person is doing a gun kata (like the movies Equilibrium and Ultraviolet) where the main character is spraying a room one could call that a combination of auto-fire and area effect. But what about single multi-target attacks? I have not played heavily since 4th edition and I skimmed my trusty copy of FRED and didn't see anything on it either so I was wondering if this was addressed in 6th edition?

  5. Re: So...if I want to run classic champions (the 6E version)...which books? Hey folks thanks for all the advice! I'm making up a list for Santa now and hopefully he won't get mugged by Foxbat on the way down the chimney.
  6. In a separate thread I went into how Foxbat made off with my BBB. So if all else fails I could take a stab at 6th edition. I took a quick look and was floored...there are now so many books! Could anyone advise a short list (given my limited budget) of what I need to run a classic champions campaign? The usual villains (think old Enemies), UNTIL, VIPER, PSI, Genocide and Doctor Destroyer? I mean in the old days I went with the Champions box set, Enemies 1-2, and the Island of Dr. Destroyer. So that's a bunch of villains, UNTIL, PSI, VIPER, and Genocide. Eventually I went and bought a ton of the other books...but found I didn't really use them (other than for fun reading). Overall throughout the years my favorite extras were: Favorite Module: The Great Supervillain Contest. (Island of Dr. Destroyer runner up...I mean it's the classic first module after all) Favorite Sourcebook: Mind Games. (runner up was Mystic Masters) Utility/other: The original Heromaker (yes I still have this on floppy! runner up: all the Adventurer's Clubs) So I hope that's enuff background...what should I pick up? And I'd like to keep it under $100 if possible. I may have more come tax return time but not right now... Tanks folks!
  7. Struck by the Superhero RPG bug I started rummaging through my old books. I still have Champions I - III, Star Hero, Stronghold, Fantasy Hero, Adventurer's Club 1-20 ish, Mind Games, Mystic Masters, Neutral Ground, etc...and somehow Foxbat snuck in and made off with my BBB. I mean I easily found FRED but the BBB...nowhere to be found. While I'm desperately turning my house upside down looking I am beginning to think I may have to buy it again. Is there any chance it will ever be reprinted or it is available in PDF? Tanks in advance!
  8. Hi all. A new GM just began running her first Champions game. It's pretty much standard (350), but slightly more serious/dark. For example she didn't want anyone to take a code versus killing. Since she did not want to worry about min-maxing, I suggested that we run a 'straight-rules' game. Nothing with STOP, ! or a magnifying glass. She agreed and so did everyone else. Well, I'm the only character that doesn't have a power framework(s) or an advantage/limitation/power that falls under that category. The GM just gave in and allowed them. In addition, she (the GM) plans on using NPCs from the official sourcebooks without any changes. As you folks know, most of the NPCs automatically use frameworks or have powers like Extra-dimensional movement powers usuable against others, and so forth. As long as we stay out of combat, my character will be okay. I took a bunch of detective-CSI skills and contacts. He's basically a martial artist/brick. I am enjoying the roleplaying portion of the game so far. My worry is once we start fighting. In combat I am probably going to get splattered. Not that it matters that much to me, I'm thinking that it may help drive my point about disparate balance home. I was debating on jumping on the bandwagon, but I'd rather stick to my principles...even if it means I'm about 60% as effective as everyone else. Suggestions?
  9. Death from Above (DFA) has a 25 STR and 15 points in Leaping (15") DFA leaps 20" laterally (his full leap) and targets Big Bad Evil Guy (BBEG). Now, does he make 2 attack rolls or one? Without accurate power modifier, does DFA have to: 1) target hex (DCV 3, -6 OCV for range) 2) make move through attack roll on BBEG at -V/5 => -20"/5 = -4 OCV? Or because the BBEG is in his target hex does he only need to make one attack roll (the one to resolve the Move Through against BBEG)? Oh and happy holidays everyone! Cheers.
  10. Re: Monty Haul DnD vets: need your help for NPC villain team Heh! You beat me with the 50% damage reduction with the 'save for half' gestures, focus limitations. Some ideas/powers: +20 to Presence -1/2 OIF Chainmail shirt with "HP 1000" emblazoned on it. +xd6 (I don't know what kind of DC's you use in your campaign) when: 1) attacks from 'behind' (old-scholl DnD) 2) when flanking opponent with another party member (new DnD) 3) special effect (proclaims "hey I rolled my 10th 20 in a row" aka cheats on the die roll) 4) or as 3) but activation roll to represent a 'critical hit' You may want to not give the group teamwork. Most Monty Haul parties are a collection of gods not a group that works as a team. AVLD does BODY (any number of no save-die spells). Triggered teleport (when knocked out) - contingency. There's more but I have to go to the airport now, I'll post if there is an internet available where I end up. Boy I love your game idea. (Reminds me of the intro scenario of Tales of the Floating Vagabond) Cheers. P.S. One more thing: xd6 Dispel/Suppress AoE Radius versus special effects "All monty haul special effects." Focus: The Rules book. Extra time, Gestures (flipping through pages).
  11. Re: Autofire and Reduced Endurance on STR. Exactly, which is why I do not want reduced END to work with Autofire. I have considered variable advantage as well...may be the way to go. Thanks.
  12. Lightning Fist an accomplished fighter in hand to hand combat. Due to his advanced training, his normal strikes take very little out of him (reduced END on STR). However as an extra effort, he can do his 'Thousand Fingered Strike.' I debated on various methods but am considering buying either a HA with autofire or buying Autofire on STR. Now, I do NOT want the reduced END to apply to his autofire mode, as it is an 'extra effort' form of attack. Would it be illegal to buy reduced END at the normal level (+1/4 for 1/2 END cost) for his STR but say it simply doesn't work when he is in autofire mode? Or would it be better to simply buy HA with autofire? Now if I buy HA, it becomes a 'visible power' which is not really keeping with his hand to hand combat concept. He doesn't have any 'visible' powers. Opinions.
  13. Re: Challenge The Jackalope - If You Dare! Winston Irving-Mortimer Peters worked as a sanitation engineer at a nuclear power plant for many years. Continued exposure to radioactive scrubbing bubbles triggered his latent mutation. Now he continually radiates a sanitizing, cleansing and sparkling aura that unfortunately has a side effect of causing radiation poisoning from prolonged exposure. He also has various other radioactive bubble powers including enclosing individuals within a super clean (frictionless sphere) acting as a portable night-light and so on. Mortimer kept his day job, but at night he is known as the Bubble Master . 350 points. Cheers.
  14. Evildude fires his mystics bolts of bleah at Superfastguy. Superfastguy vanishes before the blasts hit him then reappears in the same spot (+DCV, special effect, teleport). Superfastguy runs towards Evildude. Halfway there, he jumps in the air and vanishes, only to reappear 3 stories above Evildude as his sword slash goes home. As a single phase, how would you create this attack? You could use teleport, but going invisible halfway through and then reappearing? (fringe?) I don't have the book in front of me so I don't recall if Teleport 'velocity' could be used as a move through anyway...perhaps I could add dice based upon falling distance. (Or just call it HA, special effect overhead strike). Just looking for ideas. Cheers.
  15. Rocketman acquires a target and locks on. He fires a cluster of homing missiles at the target. Targetdummy evades for several phases and manages to dodge several, a few others run out of fuel and land harmlessly in the ocean, one missile accidentally locks onto another hero, one is missile deflected then comes back around for another pass, one missile misses a tight turn and explodes into a passing automobile and two missiles still manage to strike. I am scratching my head trying to come up with a way to come up with the construct for this. Any ideas welcome. Cheers.
