  1. Re: Surviving fall from orbit I have no problems with the damage a superheroic character takes from falling. However, the ability of a character with NCM to survive the same fall rankles me. The maximum Body for NCM is 20, which IMO is too high but thats another topic. With an 8 PD, such a character would only be at -2 Body on average from a terminal fall and has a pretty decent chance of waking up on his own before he bled out! Both PC's and NPC's have a 0 point Disad in games I run; 2x Body from damage where the DC is => than double the applicable defense. This rarely has an effect on PC's but means that 'normals' and NPC's can be killed by large attacks. This means that Supers can't indiscriminately throw their biggest attacks at normals, and also means that non Supers pretty much always die from terminal falls, just like irl. I actually implemented this rule not as a way to keep PC's from firing their 10d6 EB at normals (which is sometimes a problem but can usually be solved by talking to the PC in question) but in order to allow my villains to occasionally kill a victim without having to blast it over and over. It's nice to be able to one-shot disintegrate a normal for a huge PRE attack without having to worry about firing the same attack at a PC later in the fight.
  2. Re: area of effect One of my pc's makes an 'Insect Swarm' Change Env. that's very hard to see in as the bugs fly around the faces of everyone affected. To this he has the Personal Immunity advantage with UoO on an OAF. If you're equipped with a group communicator, it emits a low power signal which provides you a clear space from the bugs. It's a reasonably cheap way to simulate an effect which hits a whole area but for some reason leaves certain people alone.

  5. Re: Requires skill roll [quote=Hyper-Man;1386892 The jukebox from the old TV series Happy Days could be modeled with RSR. Fonzy just had the best roll of all the characters such that he could operate it by the simplest gesture whereas everyone else (with everyman skill only) had to actually use the old fashioned method of entering coins and making a selection. They could try snapping or wall slapping like the Fonz but it might take a very long time to work. Heyyyy! Now I have to make up a Happy Days scenario.
  6. Re: [Character] Haphazard Pretty cool overall, but there are a couple things you might want to consider with this guy. 33 is an amazing amount of points to spend on WF. For 32 points you can buy 4 levels with ALL Combat, and if you happen to be using an unfamiliar weapon you can use 3 of them to negate the penalty and still add 1 to your OCV or DCV. Or you could just buy 3 All Combat levels with a limitation that they only negate penalties due to lack of familiarity. Ditto with all those TF. It looks like you spent 9 points on Throw and 10 points on Defensive Strike. Seems a little off. Also, based on his concept, you probably want to buy some Ranged MA maneuvers. If his EB is based on picking up random objects and throwing them as it seems to be, it's pretty hard to justify it doing more damage than he does with his Strength. He might want to buy Find Weakness or something similar to simulate his skill instead of an EB thats powerful enough to blow up a car. Also, I may be mistaken but I think if you use objects of opportunity your damage is maxed at dice = to the combined Def and Body of the object. Instead of buying defensive Pre to such a high level, he might just want to buy his Pre up to 30 so he can be more impressive himself. Thirty Pre is high enough to avoid effect from most non Dr. Destroyer Pre attacks, and then he could make decent Pre attacks of his own.
  7. Re: How do you keep your dark knights from going "squish"? Seems like a pretty big hole in your belt between 'Sh-' and 'Sq-'. What about your Size Altering Spray? Where's your Skid Mark Analyzer? Or your Small Anti Tank Rounds? No Dark Knight Sniper Scope? Or Soiled Underwear Sampler? Oh wait, that's redundant with the Skid Mark Analyzer.
  8. Re: Damage Shield Hypermans DS construct that he used just goes back to an earlier statement I made where I pointed out that as it currently sits, DS is only ever seen in some sort of heavily advantaged Penetrating KA. Now I'm going to go further and suggest that the advantage as written is so awful that no one will even consider buying it with anything other than the aforementioned KA's or NND's.
  9. Re: How do you keep your dark knights from going "squish"? A lot of great stuff in this post, but I do take exception to the 'raw dumb STR' part. Strength is not dumb. Bricks are not dumb. Mentalists are dumb.
  10. Re: New to the hero system, trying to figure out some things I'd always thought of him as being Colostomy-like. I kid, I kid! The big smelly Russian goofball has noooo sense of humor.....
  11. Re: Munchkin powers on legal active point costs Uh, Hugh? Zed? I don't mean to criticize, but did you read the original post? Maybe I misinterpreted it, but it sure didn't seem like it was supposed to be a thread about how to avoid abusing powers. So hows about sending in your own good old fashioned super-advantaged power? Come on, you can do it...............
  12. Re: Munchkin powers on legal active point costs Drain SPD 0 1/2d6, Inherent (+1/4), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Uncontrolled (+1/2), Persistent (+1/2), No Normal Defense (Temporal manipulation powers, wearing a Chrono Watch, 0 Int. mechanical objects.; +1), Continuous (+1), Invisible Power Effects, Hide effects of Power, SFX Only (Fully Invisible; +1), Mobile (+1), Cumulative (192 points; +2), Area Of Effect (8388608" Radius; +6 1/4) (75 Active Points) Everyone else gets their Speed Drained to 1. And if you'll notice the size, that means EVERYONE. Except for his thugs wearing the Chrono Watches he's given them. Fast guys will eventually notice that everyone else seems faster (as they all move at the same speed and the fast guy is used to moving more often) and slow guys will think everyone else has slowed down to their speed. Note that the Drain affects Computers but NOT Vehicles. And of course, Our Hero. I like to call him Time Lad.
  13. Re: lets make this work: Instant Change Well, Dracula's just a guy in a tux. And Dirty Harry always seemed pretty impressive in his suit too. Yes, if you have multiple ID's then you might not get the benefit of a reputation(if you have one) in your secret ID, but if you've spent 30 points on Pre then people will stop to listen to you. Presence and Strength cost the same, and 40 Pre has the same relationship to a normal persons Pre that 40 Str does to that guys Str. Now, Destructor might not be impressed overly much by it anymore than he's impressed by 40 Str, but he also might. He might be less impressed by a guy in spandex than a guy in a muscle tee; there's no hard and fast rule. I'm aware that everyone knows that. About the hard and fast thing, I mean.
  14. Re: How do you keep your dark knights from going "squish"? Another thing that I'm often annoyed by is the all too common tendency to keep PD and ED close together in value. If the campaign range is 20-30 it seems that most characters buy their defenses to within a couple of points of each other, rather than having one of them high and the other low. Of course, in this theoretical example the average would be 25 in each, but another tendency I've noticed is the creep toward the upper end in all abilities. When OCV's are supposed to be 8-12 and attacks are supposed to be 40-60 AP for example, you'd think that would mean the 12 OCV guy would throw 40 point powers. In reality pc's rarely show such restraint on their own and every ability will likely be at the 'average or above level'. Everyone has a reason that one maxed out ability shouldn't require them to have a corresponding minimum ability elsewhere. Anyway, back to defenses. It's perfectly justifiable to have characters with high PD and low ED or vice versa. Think about it, if you found that bullets bounced off you are you likely to splash yourself with freon to test your ED before you put on a superhero costume? Most people will attempt to make sure they're at least bullet-resistant before trying to rob a bank, but not too many will check their laser resistance. If this is discussed with pc's in advance then it isn't a heavy handed approach at all.
  15. Re: Delaying an opponent Every ruling or suggestion I've seen on Speed Drains makes me want to disallow them entirely. The effect on someone of getting hit with a Speed drain after they aborted their phase to Dodge is just too annoying to contemplate. I can't imagine using this power as a GM and using it as a player is even harder to justify. I should say I can imagine it, and the thought makes me shudder.
  16. Re: New to the hero system, trying to figure out some things And you didn't even include my favorite limitation on Armor, Visible. Or Extra Time to activate the costume. _____________________________________________________________ I used to be a Munchkin. Now I'm a Junior Member:thumbdown
  17. Re: The Grand List Of Overuse Science Fiction Cliches "Not really a lot to worship after it 'splodes."
  18. Re: Dumbest thing... These are probably a little more obscure than most, but it's a tie for me. Dumbest use of powers by non Plastic Man characters- Flash using his super speed to carry on both sides of a conversation by running back and forth across a room and changing clothes so fast that no one noticed. Dumbest non use of powers-Robotman gets hit by a car and separated into 2 halves, legs on on side of the road and arms on the other. He braids a rope out of grass and spends hours trying to lasso his legs instead of CRAWLING across the road. Dumbest thing to happen to a character- Waiting till now to kill Cap. They should have done it years ago, look at all the interest it's created.
  19. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... A group of new pc's in a fantasy setting. I'm playing a Bard who specializes in drumming. Goblins appear near the camp and as everyone starts attacking them I dive under the wagon and start using my drumsticks on every available surface to activate a special ability. Me- I 'inspire courage'. Everyone else- Yeah, you sure do.
  20. Re: Delaying an opponent Wow, I've learned a lot of interesting things in this thread. The Pre attack mechanics are broken. Acrobatics and Breakfall help keep you from being Stunned. Some people actually like CoH. Instant isn't enough of a limitation.
  21. Re: Damage Shield The way Damage Shield currently works discourages players from using them. While occasionally someone will come up with a heavily advantaged one in a multipower (almost always 1d6 HKA + Penetrating) even these rarely get turned on in fights and no one thinks twice about hitting anyone with a DS. I'm going to be implementing a rule which makes DS a +0 advantage that can only be bought on Continuous powers, which still doesn't make them particularly viable but it helps somewhat for people who want one for sfx.
  22. Re: The big metagame mash-up Doesn't seem like you'd have a real hard time coming up with Psych Lims for a guy that would deliberately gather up a group of dangerous foes and think they're going to fight each other for his amusement.
  23. Re: Shrinking and Growth: Comics vs. HERO System. Shrinking definitely doesn't need more cost breaks to make it desirable. 40 points provides +8DCV, the same as 40 points in DCV CSL's. It also allows a few other things, like +8d6 attacks with Growth momentum. I haven't bought Metamorph yet, though it's on my short list. One of my favorite attacks is the sfx Growth momentum attack, where I just buy HA and the sfx is that I grew big enough to use Growth momentum but then shrunk immediately. I also allow Shrinking momentum where appropriate, though this is rare.
  24. Re: How many points does a person have? The perfect, the ultimate number of points is obviously 42.
