  1. Re: Anyone run a Starcraft setting Ok, I haven't really seen much for SC2, so it may be something new they decided to add. Is this actually an "official" Star Craft site, or a fan site? The Blizzard site doesn't have this much detail.
  2. Re: Anyone run a Starcraft setting I haven't seen anything saying the space marines are convicts, where did you get that from? I just looked at the Starcraft site to double check and didn't see anything there about it.
  3. Re: Cool Guns for your Games Yes, the Five seven is the pistol I meant. The various 6mm somethings for the AR-15 look like they have a lot of promise, and if one were adopted I'm sure there will be other rifles chambered for the round. 7mm was selected as the "perfect" assault rifle cartridge back in the 50s, but politics resulted in the 7.62mm NATO. Later politics again brought about a change to the 5.56mm NATO. So the various 6mm cartridges once again show there is little new, it would be funny if 60 years after first proposed a 6-7mm cartridge was adopted.
  4. Re: Cool Guns for your Games I'm just going off the early PDWs inspired by the P90, clearly it is evolving. Initially the idea was a pistol power range with enhanced range and armor penetration. Complaints from early users have been poor knockdown. Since most 3rd world combatants don't wear body armor the enhanced armor penatration has not been a plus, so 9mm SMGs are still quite popular for the SMG role. The problem with short rifles like the CAR-15 has always been the fact the barrels are way to short for a cartridge like the 5.56mm NATO, which results in massive muzzle flash. The 6mm round used by the Knight PDW bumps the power level up, but only just enough for the barrel length. It will be interesting to see if militaries are willing to add a new round to their arsenals between the pistols/smg round and rifles. FN offered a pistol in their 5.7mm, this 6mm will not be able to offer that option. So far most seem to be resisting a move like that, but it has happend before. The US and NATO resisted 5.56mm for years because it meant their primary rifle did not use the same caliber as the machinegun. Obviously they got past that eventually. However the various 6.??? rounds being developed for the M4 have not gone far beyond development despite their obvious performance improvement in short barrel weapons vs short barrelled 5.56mm weapons.
  5. Re: Cool Guns for your Games I haven't seen an actual definition, but I would say a PDW differs from an SMG or short rifle by using a short bottleneck cartridge (miniature rifle cartridge) with similar power to a pistol. The FN P90 uses a 5.7x28mm round producing 397 ft/lbs The H&K MP7 PDW uses a 4.6x30mm round producing 421 ft/lbs By comparison Pistol 9x19mm (9mm Parabellum) produces 420 ft/lbs (from a pistol) 11.5x23mm (.45 ACP) produces 352 ft/lbs (from a pistol) Rifle 5.45x39mm (5.45mm Soviet) produces 971 ft/lbs (from a 16" barrel) 5.56x45mm (5.56mm NATO) produces 1767 ft/lbs (from a 20" barrel) 7.62x39mm (7.62mm Soviet) produces 2010 ft/lbs (from a 16" barrel) The Knight PDW blurs this a bit by using a slightly larger more powerful cartridge (optimized for an 8-10" barrel) and is really going more for that CAR-15 / M-4 carbine market. The Knight PDW uses a 6x35mm round producing 831 ft/lbs (8" barrel) The AK-74SU has very similar performance to the Knight PDW. The PDW (FN P90) entered the market as a light weapon intended for non front line troops who needed a light weapon more powerful than a pistol. This very group was the reason the M1 Carbine was adopted in WW2. 7.62x33mm (.30 carbine) produces 880 ft /lbs (from an 18" barrel) I guess there really isn't much new, just new packaging.
  6. Re: Cool Guns for your Games Well the P90 I think was actually a reaction to the machine pistols that were popping up in the 80s, Stechkin, Beretta 93R, H&K VP70 etc. The later PDWs are mostly just submachineguns, using cartridges with better ballistics than the pistol cartridges traditionally used in smgs to provide a longer effective range. With the exception of the P90 most of these current weapons can probably trace their heritage to the CAR-15, H&K HK53 and similar short barrel assault "rifles".
  7. Re: Cool Guns for your Games I think FN is responsible for the PDW with their P90. It uses a 5.7mm round they designed specifically for it in the late 80s.

  9. Re: Adaptive Camouflage Obviously the Obi-wan quote was just in fun, but really the idea isn't taht out there. I was thinking of the somebody else's problem generator from the Hitchhikers guide. It's not invisible but nobody pays any attention to it. Probably more of a supers solution but really it isn't inherently super powered than invisibility, images etc. It's all in the description, if it was scientifically designed to be unremarkable, then mind control seems reasonable. Kind of like forcing an intelligence roll to notice that the weather beaten junker parked by a dumpster is actually not quite the junker it appears to be.
  10. Re: Adaptive Camouflage Mind control, "this is not the car you are looking for".
  11. Re: Cool Guns for your Games Mythbusters should have tried this one, when you absolutely positively want to defoliate an area. Quad .50 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m225CyqeEAs or for those who prefer something a bit more high tech, GAU-19 .50 cal gatling Just a pet peeve, the mini-gun is a gatling style weapon not a chaingun. The chaingun is a specific type of electrically operated machine gun that uses a chain to operate the action instead of recoil or gas like most guns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chain_gun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatling_guns
  12. Re: PA Hero -- Best all around ammunition I agree with its usefulness, it just doesn't really meet the criteria of the original post.
  13. Re: PA Hero -- Best all around ammunition .22 has two problems in this particular setting. One its a rimfire so can't easily be reloaded (it can be but I understand it is not remotely practical). #2 not so hot against roving bands of non zombie aggressors, sure it might kill them but maybe not before they kill you.
  14. Re: Fun looking toy Since it sounds like a pulpy campaign, I wouldn't worry about the impractical layout. Just look up the stats for an M16 with M203, enlarge the magazine capacity to 50 or 100 rounds and call it good, the rest is just special effects. I'm too lazy to check but I'm sure the M16 & M203 are in Dark Champions if not in the 5th rule book.
  15. Re: TASER Rounds Right there is your problem, tasers are called less than lethal, not non-lethal specifically because they can and have resulted in deaths. Suppress and Entangle do seem like good alternatives to an energy attack. They basically work on a pain response which is why drugged out people have been known to ignore the taser. They do not seem to have a lingering effect which reduces their value for lone officers, much better if there is someone ready to slap cuffs on them as soon as the power stops. While I could go with an NND for a regular taser I would strongly consider some normal attack for a shotgun launched version, the impact and those spikes have some pretty serious potential for minor to moderate injury. I'm sure getting hit in the face or groin could really ruin your day.
  16. Re: PA Hero:How long would plumbing work? Definitely for a lone survivor or small group you are probably looking at composting toilets at best, and more likely pit toilets. Of course if that lone survivor happened to own a honey pumper he would be all set with the indoor plumbing situation. I pity the fool who follows him down the highway, talk about the mother of all dropped weapons.
  17. Re: PA Hero:How long would plumbing work? Tanks can be emptied ( ), a lot also depends on the size of the tank and use, 20 people using a system designed for a 2 bedroom home will quickly fill up. The characteristics of the soil also plays a large part in frequency of maintenance. Staying within the design limits allows the bacteria to do its work and greatly increases the time between major service. We have a septic at our rental house and its been going fine for 10 years without a problem. I have a book that gets into all the various non sewer disposal systems, composting toilets, pit toilets etc. I got it for the info on care and feeding of septic systems since the house we bought had one and I didn't know much about them. The other systems are not as practical for modern life but would work in more primitive situations. With a knowledgable person to design it, a post apocalypse society could easily maintain sanitation with minimal expenditure of resources or need for electrical power.
  18. Re: Monster Hunting I'm not familiar with Supernatural but you might have a look at Tri-tac's Stalking the night fantastic. http://www.tritacgames.com/
  19. Re: PA Hero:How long would plumbing work? Sewer systems would generally fail within hours or days (depands on how much you flush) of power failure, because the lift stations need power to keep the sewage flowing. Septic systems on the other hand could last a lot longer since you just need water to fill the toilet tank which may or may not require power. If you have a water source (creek, river, pond etc) nearby this could be done by lugging buckets of water. If you have a windmill to pump water to an above ground tank you may not even suffer a disruption of service.
  20. Re: PA Hero -- Best all around ammunition I would give some serious consideration to a large bore revolver round, I'd probably go for .44 Magnum myself as it would be more common than the .45 Colt and offers more range of use than the .357 magnum. You can find revolvers, semi-auto and derringers for handguns, lever action, pump action and bolt action for rifles in any of these calibers. .44 Magnum revolvers can also chamber .44 Special, .44 Russian and .44-40 cartridges. Semi-autos are fussy but if you stick with revolvers and manual action rifles the .44 magnum can be loaded with a light load providing power similar to a .45 ACP (very manageable in a heavy gun like most .44 revolvers) or hot loads that can rival some rifle rounds. Loaded in a rifle it can be loaded even hotter and provide a decent gun for medium to large game. I believe there are some sabot rounds available that would provide better long range performance as well although those would be hard to find. When you start running low on pre-made bullets it is still a useful round using cast lead bullets (and you can scavenge and melt down lead tire weights if you get desperate) A straight case like most pistol rounds would also last longer and is easier to reload, particularly if not loaded towards the upper end of their power. Necked down cartridges like most rifles tend to elongate more thinning the brass. Straight cases would also be more tolerant of black powder since spent cases can be cleaned easier. The only real downside to a large revolver round is range. Even in a rifle you will be limited to about 300 yards, while the 5.56mm can easily remain effective to 500 yards and most .30 military and hunting rounds are effective at 1000 yards. That can easily be dealt with by setting aside a few rifles with ammo better suited to dealing with long range targets.
