  1. Re: Why are so many people upset that Cryptic is only using the Champions IP? A totally point based system with no levels would not work very well in an MMO such as this imo. There has to be a way to set a cap on the power level players can achieve. Some of the biggest issues in almost every MMO on the market are farmers who sell in-game goods for real money, and power leveling. If you made a game system where there was no limit, these groups would literally have the ability to ruin the game servers and unbalance the pvp aspects that may or may not be present in the game. A reasonable compromise would be to have characters receive a set amount of character points to buy powers and such when they level up. This would still make it possible to have a maximum level so maxed out characters can all be roughly the same power level.
  2. Re: Advice for creating a custom setting I'll check into Robot Warriors, I have all the Robotech RPG books from Palladium so that will give me enough setting info, I guess then it's just a matter of adapting character creation and mecha to Hero rules. Thanks for the help
  3. Re: What do you need to have in order to play the game? Yes for a generic game system like Hero, setting books are entirely optional. If people don't like the setting books, they don't need to buy them. And another thing to consider is many GMs will use genre books from other lines for setting crossovers. Like suppose a Champions character uses a Time Travel or Dimension Travel power. They could wind up in a Pulp Hero or Star Hero setting. The GM may want to have the genre books handy for such events. Buying the entire line of sourcebooks for a 1-shot in a mostly unrelated campaign setting would be kind of pointless.
  4. I was interested in playing a mainstream Champions setting, but I was also considering adapting 1 or 2 other settings with Hero system rules. Not really a big fan of the Palladium game system, but I like their game settings. Their fantasy RPG setting is actually pretty good. In many ways better than D&D imo. Anyway back to the topic, instead of running the Paladium version of Robotech, I wanted to adapt the setting for Hero system rules. So if anyone has some advice which Hero sourcebooks would be most useful for a setting such as this or has any other general tips for getting started, I'd love to hear it.
  5. Re: Why are so many people upset that Cryptic is only using the Champions IP? Why do people assume that just because Cryptic has rights to use the Champions IP that they have total ownership of the RPG name anyway? Other companies have made similar arrangements and have not had hostile takeovers. Must be paranoia working here.
  6. Re: A lot of new traffic from the Champions MMO website? Oh yea, I'm one of those people who used to play Champions and now play City of Heroes waiting for a better Super MMO. I hope Cryptic fixes the sticky points in COH and make COMMO much better. And yes, the news of the MMO version has sort of tempted me to get back into the pen & paper game again also. But I may hold out for 6th edition so I can get all the books current at that time. So hurry up and get them done for me
  7. Re: Information for HERO/Champions Fans About The Champions Online MMO Hi. I am new to these boards and I thought I would make a few comments. I played Champions for quite a while and liked the system very much, I think it was 3rd edition when real life stuff happened and my friends who I used to play it with graduated high school, a few went off to college and I couldn't find another group to join since. Anyway, my fascination with Super RPGs continued, I dabbled in a few other systems BESM, GURPS Supers, Heroes Unlimited.. I still think Champions was the best and offers the best character creation options there is. I was pretty excited when City of Heroes launched, the first Super MMO. I was a bit disappointed in the power selection options though. Not "generic" enough. I really was hoping to have actual power creation in the game. If I want a character that has both blue fire blasts and green ice blasts, I should get it Anyway I'm hoping Cryptic makes Champions MMO a lot more customizable and keep the COH costume creator (but continue improving it). And of course vast improvements on the travel powers system without that speed suppression they added would be really nice. I really hope Cryptic impresses me with this one. And if the game is successful, perhaps there will be a new wave of players to the RPG and I'll find a group as well
